Using a chicken tractor in the backyard garden is one of the most sustainable ways to create a constant nutrient supply for your garden soil while getting daily fresh eggs at the same time. Join us as we explain our chicken tractor cover cropping system and how it has been so valuable to us over the last year and a half.
We'll move our chicken tractor onto a lush new cover crop plot with an overwintering mix full of rye, barley, clover, vetch, peas, and more! We'll explain the nutritional components of this mix and why we don't have to give our chickens any additional layer food while they're eating this cover crop.

I used to keep about 10 to 12 layers and a roster or two on 50 acres free range back when no one called it free range. They never went further than 10 acres and I never fed them other than a handful of scratch once a week and that was just to keep them from running off. I never did anything with them other than get eggs and replace a missing chicken every once in a while. Chickens aint complicated.

Yes, that's true, they won't venture out a certain area from their coop, a little more if there is cover, like shrubs or man-made covers, which is why it's such a hoax how these large producers, in the name of free range, claim they are grass fed, they eat the area that they venture out to, clear in a day, and won't venture further to the rest of the green grass, and the producers won't move them, because these are fenced grids.

What I did was build a coop 45" wide by 12'4" Long and 28" tall with a 45x36" hen house upstairs on one end. I bought rough cut cedar 2x4x12 at Home Depot and I ripped the 2x4s into 2x2s. I used 2x2 everywhere I could. I used 2x4x24 for the corners and attached upper and lower side rails and end pieces to the 2x4s. Cedar is light, strong and weather resistant. I covered the frame with 1/2" rabbit cage wire. I can pick up the light end with one hand and walk it over to the next bed. I built five raised beds out of concrete blocks just big enough to set the coop down inside the raised beds. I sowed deer plot seed in the next bed over and when it got 8 inches tall I walked the coop over onto it. So I planted chicken food ahead of them and people food behind therm. I am rebuilding my garden now I am turning the blocks between the beds sideways so I have more walking room. Ast first I had 24" between beds but now I have pushed the beds together separated only by concrete blocks turned sideways so I have about 16" between beds. I hope to have seven beds by the time I get through with it. I live in the burbs so I have to do it this way. I can't let them free range. I am still working so I can't be there all the time to protect them. I haven't lost a chicken to predators in seven years. Thanks for all you do.

If you do see your egg shells start to get thinner you can just crush the egg shells from the ones you use and feed the crushed shells to the chickens it will give them back some calcium.

I usually build at least three of everything The first one is way too heavy and each one is lighter than the last. Your system looks fine as long as you can be there to protect them from predators. Rhode island reds would dig out from under that thing.

When I recall your first videos from right after the Hoss era and even before Lazy Dog Farm got its copyright, and compare how you gardened then (old school, yet productive) with your current organic, minimal till, dual purpose cover crop/ chicken tractor style, it makes me wonder what LDF is going to look like in another year. Two years. Five years. Certainly, I foresee fungal rich soil inoculants from your bioreactors and the worm beds. Greater infrastructure toward shade cloth and frost protection. Perhaps even some efforts in okree crossbreeding. Looking forward to this evolution.

I like it have to check up other clover if they around the same. We been running out meat chickens over our garden but not on just greens we feed them along with new grass but never to return to the same area. The meat chickens sure do make alot of manure is why we use them over the garden fast way to get the fertilizer. Our land is still fairly new virgin ground so needs alot of organics and manure. To build that soil not big on composting if I do it will be the lazy cold way let it set over a couple years with out a subcompact farm tractor that looks like alot of work. I work between 50 to 60 hrs at work a week wife takes care of our say homestead she's busy enough it's time for a tractor..

This is awesome! We're working on something very similar, planting some really nice cover crops. They're tractoring over the stuff we have there now but will be much happier with stuff planted especially for them! We also have our quail in tractors, and plan on doing rabbits, too. They will all be able to go over the same cover crop pasture. :) And if it grows a bit long, you can just chop some off for them, and even let some go to seed, which they'll love, too! We're a North Georgia neighbor. :D

If I had the space I’d definitely do this! My crops are always better when I use composted coop litter. It’s comprised of either pine shavings or straw. I’ve currently got 10 layers and 12 pullets that are at just about laying age but I don’t expect anything before the days start lengthening again. 6 of those pullets are American Bresse that I hatched out with 9 cockerels. Of course six of those are going to be retiring to the deep freezer in about another week or so. I’m keeping 3. I’ll keep one in with the six pullets for sustainability. The other two will go in with the other six pullets (3 Dominic’s and 3 New Hampshire Reds) and my 10 layers (Orpington, Black Australorps, Rhode Island Red) I have two separate coops and yards made with 16 ft cattle panels to form hoops covered in hardware fabric and shade cloth.

You should still be supplementing calcium. You won’t notice a deficiency in the egg shells because the hens’ bodies will be pulling calcium from their bones to create the shells. Some oyster shell in a cup attached to the frame is cheap insurance for the health of your hens.

Don’t some people oven dry the egg shells, crush them and feed the eggs shells back to the birds to provide calcium?

Yes, that is an age old method. You just need to ensure that the shells are pulverized enough to not at all resemble anything close to an egg shell, lest it give them any bright ideas about pecking at their own eggs.

Im sure this is a dumb question but is there not a problem with cover crops pulling more nutrients from the soil than they replace? I realize the chickens are adding back to soil also however when 100 percent of their intake is being extracted they cant be replacing more than 100 percent just as the plants cant. Maybe im confused on how this works.
@LazyDogFarm

The cover crops will definitely consume some nutrients in the soil, but they give more than they take. Especially when you consider all the other benefits like pest management, weed management, erosion control, and contributing to better soil biology.
