If you're an individual experiencing difficulty with impulse control or have mild to severe cases of commitment issues... dreadlocks are not for you.

tbh I have commitment issues but I see it as a way to annoy society, everyone wants you to look exactly like the next person. Dreads are random af, they also filter out people who I don't wanna talk to. It's kinda of like a learning experience, I had a couple times (4months freeform atm, had them for 8 years before but chopped on impulse, always long hair) where I'd wanna shave my head or restart, but I just think about it 3 days and if I still wanna do it then yeah, I would.

I have had dreads now for 16 months. Best decision I ever made. This video says it all. If you are wishy washy about the decision don't do it. It takes lots I mean lots of patience. I researched for a yr. The hardest part is like LazyDreads says be prepared to be judged by other ppl. They assume your nasty and you don't wash your hair.

Peter Grant Lloyd in the states they are a issue. Its so sad that the dread lock community was fighting against being discriminated against for having them. Dreads lost. You can be rejected for any type of work because you have them and people associate they as being dirty and that you don't shower at all. Its so Wrong! People without dreads some of them don't bathe at all and they don't get discriminated against. People here also in some areas are very stuck that its a African thing and only Africans can have them. people need to learn history but I say DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY AND MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF. These idiots don't pay your bills shrug off what they say.

I don't think I ever will again, had my last set for 8 years and people reacted exactly the same but they treated me no different. I realized I had done it for them and started freeforming 4 months ago, it's more of a statement of I don't care what you think about how I look, if you want to talk to me you probably don't care about superficial things which is good. personally, I have been interested in dreadlocks since i was about 6. Im now with my 2nd set of locks after many years without them. You have to be prepared for some of the nastiest and most uneducated people in the world to make comments, shoot you dirty looks, shield their children from you, get followed constantly while shopping, possibly get pulled over for being dreadlocked..... The list goes on and on. I love the honesty layed out in this video. Dreadlocks force a lot of things both good and bad.

BRAVO CHRIS!!!!! If you are incapable of making your OWN decision what to do with your OWN hair .... then you are NOT ready for dreads. It's not the old Princess Di feathered haircut that, if you don't like it, you can go get a new style. That first year can be RUGGED (I lived in wool tams!) ... don't ask the KZbin guy, even though it WILL be easier to day "LAZYDREADS GUY MADE ME!!" when you realize you can't handle the wait, the criticism, the looks or the odd questions.

June 11 marks my one year dreadlock anniversary. I tried making them once, but took them out after a week since I felt like I hadn't done enough research. Also my hair was way too short. I spent two years researching on and off, sometimes obsessing over it a lot. I didn't cut my hair at all for all that time, since I wanted it long, healthy and "fresh" (as in not filled with hair dye or other products). When I finally got around to it, it took two weeks to make them, since I had other tings to do. I had never worn my hair in a bun before, but I had to since it was part normal hair, part dreadlocks. TWO WEEKS of tightly pulling my hair constantly. I used twist and rip method, so there were little hairs EVERYWHERE. I had to vaccuum my desk, my chair and myself on a daily basis. Had I started this process at a time where I was overhyped about how awesome dreads are, I would not have been able to finish. And I do admit, I have had many doubts along the way. My dreads are not at all mature, even though I've had them for so long. There is loose hair, and some months it just looks like a birds nest when looking from the front, and I could go on and on. No, I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone to get dreads if they are unsure. When in doubt, do research, or just drop it for a few weeks and see if it's still interesting next month. There is plenty of time, but if you just want to try it right now, make a baby dread or two. At least that's how I started. One baby dread became three, and all of a sudden the lower part of my hair up to my ears was dreadlocks.

I was 100% sure I wanted them, I got them, and I lived them...until the shrinking, I knew all about the maturing stage so I was prepared for it...however...I did not expect the immense change they went though, I didn't maintain them apart from separating after washing...they folded on themselves, making very strange shapes, towards the end I was very unfortunate...let's just say I was around young children a lot XD and it caused me to make the decision to brush them out. I really miss them now and regret the way I didn't take care of them....dreadlocks are not just a hairstyle, it's a lifestyle!!

@benpowell4128
@benpowell4128 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with everything in the video. My decision to get dreadlocks was something I wanted from an early age. (around 7years old I think) My parents wouldn't let me and said that once I turned 18 I could do what I wanted. Those 10-11 years allowed me to research and think about whether or not I truly wanted them or if I even had the patience to put up with everything they come with. Once I turned 18 I waited another year to mull it over. That time I spent researching was CRITICAL to my dreadlock experience. I got my dreads to look like I envisioned as well as having some semblance of the types of crap I'd have to put up with (be it from the hair itself or from other people.) without that time to get myself prepared I likely wouldn't have been able to stick through the year or so it took for them to make me confident in them. Dreads are one of those choices that if you have mixed feelings about, you probably shouldn't get them, or at least, wait for a long while to think and research. Many of the issues and questions I see people having with their dreads or who are thinking about getting them are from a lack of research and critical thinking. Be patient before you get them. If you can't be patient when you don't have them, odds are you won't be patient with them once you do. And patience is everything.

This I the great thing about the freeform method. I'm in my third month of not combing my hip long hair and it's great to see my hair take all these little steps every day. It's not a leap or something I'm going to 'get done'. It's nothing I have to get used to, and people around me haven't even noticed either. It's easier with super long hair though because you can style messy plaits and buns and no ones the wiser.

Way to keep it real!! I'm just now embarking on my dread journey. I, personally, and 150% committed to it! I can't wait! I really like what you had to say. And I agree. It's a HUGE step and shouldn't be entered into on a whim. If you, yourself, aren't really ready or if you don't really fully understand what you are getting into then you might just end up shaved headed. I've been learning about dreads for 4 years. Everything from how to do them to how to get rid of them. I'd started this past weekend but made a mistake in that I washed my hair with bad residue building shampoo and then conditioned it before I started!!! LOL Not a great idea!! It so did not work!! LOL So I'm going out today to get some good anti-residue shampoo today and will start locking this coming weekend! Thank you for your video!!!

I started mine 3+ years ago and I don't recommend them either. Most of the people that comment on them think they are 'cool' and say they want them, but its like they just saw mine and decided they want them. It's really not a fashion choice like getting your hair colored or getting a different haircut. It takes years of patience and daily humility when it comes to sleeping or showering or dressing. They're a constant companion so I believe that having 'locks keeps you in the present and keeps you humble in many ways. I've met people who we're arrogant and cocky about having long dreads, but I don't think that's the spirit of your general dready. I can also say that its a voluntary way of being a "minority" in the way that it's not a very prevalent hairstyle (especially outside of the black community, which I fall under) so I feel many times that people of my own ilk are casting dispersions on me and sometimes I hear whispers or I turn and catch older women scoffing at me. I will admit that it does bother me on occasion and it actually prevents me from attending certain functions because I'm aware of the racism from the black community in regards to anyone with dreads who isn't black. Oh well, that's all part of my journey!

I think this is honestly great advice. I was between making the commitment and not doing it. I changed my hair too much to commit to dreads but I wanted them for about 11 or 12 years before I actually decided that I was 1000% positive. I did a lot of research and pros and cons before starting them. I knew going into them what I was gonna get as far as social judgement because of body mods that I already have. but you are definitely right about the locking process being a very crazy adventure. people don't realize that they don't stay the way they look when you first get them. and they definitely change constantly during the first year. they jump up and down and loop and lock together. you just gotta keep working with them until they finally get locked. even then they still require maintenance. so you should have a lot of patience if you decide to take the jump. I personally love them and I'm glad I decided to commit to them. also you should consider your hair type. I have thick curly hair so they are probably more likely to loop and hook than someone who has straight hair. it's not easy but I love my dreads and as much as society judges them I did them for me not society. 😊 I would only advise against them if you have commitment issues, you're impatient, you change your hair frequently, or your not completely positive that you want them and all the baggage they come with. I don't regret it at all. 💕

having dreadlocks is okay as long as you're willing to cope with it's difficulties it's not at all like straight hair. dreads love to accumulate dirt and its hard to wash em out unlike straight hair. on straight hair, washing it is easy since the dirt just falls off if you want clean dreads then be prepared for alot of maintenence also if you have dreads you better watch out for velcro or else it's gonna hurt

i thought about locking my hair for like 3 or 4 years and i finally did it because my hair was falling out alot because of anemia and i just couldnt stand it anymore it was gross and i wish i would have done it soon my advice for any newbies is to wash loads like 3 times a week and like 2 or 3 scrubs each time my hair was pretty much locked in 2 months and i just used dish soap none of that fancy stuff ive had my dreads 3 years now and they dont smell or anything at all my only complaint is how slow it seems to grow i had to extend mine because i got so annoyed having shoulder length then ear length for 2 years as for the way other people see me i only get hate online and its only ever white people who tell me im culturally appropriating which is very untrue btw in person i only get compliments mostly from black people who just think its awesome to see a white person with dreads and also older ladies who are very interested in the process

I actually really liked this video. I'd have to agree that locking ones hair should be their own decision. I did my research for 3-4 years before I decided to lock mine. I just passed the 11 month mark myself and I'd agree that the past year or so has been a bit of a hassle. I think of my entire social circle, only one person has been totally supportive the whole time. And for me, it was the best decision because it's much more than just a hairstyle, at least to me.

As for reactions I must agree that it's very mixed... Some compliment me and some ask me wth I'm doing lol definitely a humbling time for me, but my journey has started a fire inside me and I won't let that die out. loveeee your videos!! looking forward to more to come 😊😊😊

Definitely NOT the easiest process to go through. You don't know how many times I contemplated undoing or cutting them off! Fast forward to a little over a year with my dreads now, and I can't think of doing that, after building a life with them. I've had friends ask me if they should do it, and I've never recommended it. Instead, I have told them to do their research and understand what they're taking on (because it takes time, patience, and putting up with the mixed opinions during the early stages), especially if they work in environments where appearance is everything.

thanks for the video. I have had dreads for 20 years. started with short hair. wanted them for years before. it's definitely a personal choice but I'm glad for my journey and I guess it includes my dreads. I made sure they weren't too thick and mine don't smell or they would be gone.

It's a ton of work. I have dreads for the third time in my life, and I find it to be a lot more work than normal hair. Well.. It's at least more work than a buzz cut. When I had long hair I only washed it once every 3-4 days, just like I do with my dreads, except my dreads take WAY longer to wash well, and WAY longer to dry. Not to mention I tend to try and ball in loose hair after each shower, and with my normal long hair is just comb it quickly. So everything about dreads seems to take more time (in MY opinion) than normal hair. I love my dreads, but they're tiring sometimes.

I agree. I have been locking my hair for a year now. I dreaded up March 2016 and I still have some flat dreads and the tips aren't fully locked yet and I can say everyday I got out of bed I debated if dreads is what I wanted. I debated on cutting them and still do. I get mix feelings about them some days I hate em some days I absolutely love em. I got turned down on a job for having dreads. the looks I get from people are pretty funny lol. It's a big step to take so I'd suggest to really give it some thought.

I had already decided on doing dreads your videos just helped me with the process, how tos, dos and don'ts. Super helpful but I agree if you need someone to convince you just wait. I am 6 months in and its getting better but yes its rough at times you have to be ready.

100% agree, as I watch your vid while working on my second set of locs. :/ I 'unlocked' my hair 12 months ago after 9 years. Had heavy long locs and was tired of dealing with them. But during the year of having regular hair I grew increasingly uncomfortable and felt naked. Not myself at all. So back on the journey :o the next 12+ months of tangled fluff nuisance is a welcome thought after the weird last few months of a stranger in the mirror. I've come to the conclusion that im addicted to them. Regular hair is too boring and plain for me.

I am wondering what age people think is too old I have always loved the dread look. I am a 50 year old grandmother of 5. I have waist length hair have had for years. I am not your typical Granny I have a 1 1/4 inch spacer I am what I consider excentric but still wonder if being a 50 year old white woman is too old to do dreads tbh its the only thing that holds me back.

Restrictions of age and what you can wear don’t truly exist is just the culture etc that has placed these expectations on people you’re never to old for them.

EXACTLY. DREADS ARE NOT EASY. DREADS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EASY. DREADS ARE A NATURAL JOURNEY. THAT'S WHY IT MAKES ME SICK TO HEAR PEOPLE SAY "I WANT TO MAKE DREADS" .... YOU DON'T MAKE DREADS. DREADS USUALLY END UP MAKING YOU SOMEHOW. SO YES...IT IS A CROWN OF THORNS. AND IT COULD BE A HALO IF YOU LET IT.

I had a lot of time to think about dreads, so I definitely agree I was 13 when I decided I wanted dreads because of "Rob Zombie's-Feel so numb" video :) that was my inspiration and I didn't get dreads until I was 19 (mainly because my mum would have never allowed it) but it gave me a lot of time to think on whether or not I was sure I wanted dreads. I hated my static-y thin hair and now I have lovely volume to my hair and no more of my hair sticking to my face ^.^ I'll never go back!!!

been interested in getting dreads for 4 years almostused to have "baby" dreads but i wasnt allowed them for school so that journey came to a swift end very early.I'm about to move and start a job in a different city and the job i am doing allows me to have dreads.The problem i have is that i'm a cosplayer- so i'm worried that getting dreads will cause problems when getting a wig cap on for my cosplays especially when the dreads mature.Anyone here got any tips regarding wig wear or is it never gonna work and i have to chose one or the other?

@SupahLAD
@SupahLAD 7 жыл бұрын
Nathan Lester you're gonna want to keep dreads away from chlorine unless you are prepared to wash them thoroughly afterwards. Chlorine is essentially a bleach and if it is left within a dreadlock for an extended period of time it would cause mould and eventual dreadrot. I would suggest you buy one of those massive dreadlock swimming caps!😊

No problem at all friend! I don't mosturise very often as it isn't really critical to dreadlock maturity as dryer is usually better. Mosturising every few weeks will should suffice as it is always a good excuse you make you dreads smell good. However as I said before it is never something to worry about so mosturise at your leisure!😉

No cap... I honestly don't recommend locs for white people or anyone with hair of the texture. As someone with locs locing your hair can either be time consuming and strugglesome or easy af lol. If you have that kind of texture you def should make sure its something you absolutely want to do cause they all turn out different

depends where you live for sure. pretty chill here in edmonton alberta canada. not too much judgement here. my dreads are basically 0 maintenance too. this video was is not really accurate because everyone experience is very different. i disagree with alot of this info since you asked. only stressful if you make it.. if you have to maintain them all the time then ur hair isn't meant for dreads... simple yes if you cant decide yourself your not ready..of course yes you have to many videos. you can only make so many dread advice videos before is gets too much or confusing. you probably get paid for veiws so u have to keep pumping them out....i recommend starting a new channel with a different style. more variety of vids. more fun cheers
