Some people are saying they had no problem using the headset while wearing glasses. Great! *But I still have issues.* Glasses come in different dimensions and mine are too wide to be comfortable. The lenses also press against the lenses of the Gear VR, which could lead to scratching, so I opt not to use them.

+Lazy Game Reviews I think the idea of a headset type vr is stupid. I think what would make vr take off is a man machine type interface/system. Where we wouldn't use controllers or keyboard/mice combo for actions. That's my opinion.

Samsung has created... an Anime Eyes Viewer I'll get a Vive or something when they cost $200. I guess most of these still don't work well if you wear glasses. I'd rather just have a huge curved screen around me.

+Chris Walker When it comes to glasses, it depends entirely on if you are nearsighted or farsighted. If you are nearsighted, you are totally good to go, I can tell you this from my own experience and my eyes are VERY nearsighted. However, if you are farsighted, then you might have a problem. Some VR headsets do have room for glasses.
@whydoihavetodothisannoying
@whydoihavetodothisannoying 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Walker Don't think they will become all that cheap anytime soon, maybe used of eBay. I would have bought a Rift if they would sell it in Europe, right now shipping from US and taxes are not something I want to deal with, not after all the problems with the import of my large 4K display. Don't think Smartphones are good enough yet to give you the best in quality. Portable VR is intriguing thou.
@Charok1
@Charok1 8 жыл бұрын
+Outrider42 I'm very nearsighted too. I don't mind waiting another 2 years to get a better and cheaper VR device because there aren't compelling games for them yet, and the experience isn't mind blowing to me. At Black Friday/Christmas this year I'll probably get one of the new 35" ultrawide monitors on a $500 sale.
@whydoihavetodothisannoying
@whydoihavetodothisannoying 8 жыл бұрын
Outrider42 Wearing glasses as well but with a astigmatism, can see everything fine although I cant read anything farther away than ten feet and its hard to make out faces over a large distance. So it's just like being nearsighted. VR is not a problem with how close it is.
@Outrider42
@Outrider42 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Walker I always go as big as possible, though I pc game from my couch. I already have a 60" screen I use as a monitor, so anything else would have to be UHD to really be worth buying. Anyway, the Gear VR would be a pretty decent taste of VR until the Rift/Vive sort out their battles and drop in price. I have a Samsung phone already, so dropping a little more on the Gear is fine for me. I enjoy the movies and stuff already out, and VR works great with any side by side 3d videos that predate VR from the recent 3d fad. When you consider the sbs 3d movies that already exist, there is a surprising wealth of content for VR. Just not games. I also like that I can watch them in relative privacy without bothering the wife...that is a big win in my book. If Samsung added a way to directly run pc games on the Gear through a cable, that would be pretty sweet. It is possible to stream pc games using various apps, but that of course introduces a bit of lag.

@omer1996d2 8 жыл бұрын
+Chriserino really? but I still prefer the original note 4 gear vr.thou if what you say is true than it must be very similar to putting a note 5 into a the new gear vr. note 4 being 515 ppi and note 5 being 518 ppi. but again the lenses on the new gear vr provide less fov in comparison to the original as it needs to be compatible with smaller phones as well. Wich means pixels appear more dense but the fov is smaller . and in my opinion fov Is more important than ppi (especially when the difference in actual ppi is so small)

So interesting! Thank for the in depth analysis. I'm so excited for VR but I don't have a nice PC set up to get the full experience. I just want to try it! This could be an option. I've also heard about the PS4 VR, which is coming out eventually. It's about half the price of the HTC Vive (I think thats what I remember). Such a freaking exciting time for gaming technology and I wanna be apart of it, so things like this are my only options right now and it's nice to know that I have them. More then anything i'd LOVE to have a badass gaming PC with the latest VR technology, but i've got too many damn spoiled pets to feed lol. Anyways, I appreciate the detail you put in your videos LGR. Thank a lot!

Wireless is probably the future of VR. Even if external sensors for positional tracking are involved, the actual display should be untethered, with an independent power supply. Perhaps low-latency WIFI streaming video and audio to it, so that all of the heavy processing is done on the desktop. The point is to free oneself from cables that might get in the way.

The S7 is the highest PPI available for VR at this time from what I see. 1440p 5.1 inch screen, 1080 x 1440 per eye. People say it has the clearest text to read if that is a test of image quality to anyone. I say it has a cleaned up PS2.5 look to it. Get this if you have chance, it's well worth your time to try it just to see how low the latency is even for this easy access demo headset.

A few minor things: - Don't worry about small scratches on the lenses since those scratches are far away enough from the lenses focal length, so you won't see them. - The adjuster for the distance of the phone should actually make it possible to compensate for missing glasses when wearing this. - A Galaxy S6 still gives you more resolution than the final Rift! :O
@LGR
@LGR 8 жыл бұрын
- I've tried this on a friend's phone that was notably scratched and it was a huge distraction. - This only applies if you're near-sighted up to a point. If you're far-sighted, or just have eyesight bad enough, it won't help. - Yep, and the same applies to the Note 5 I was using here. :)

+ACTUALMIKU There are such things as nVidia's GameStream and Steam's in-home streaming, so that you can render games on the PC and stream over Wi-Fi to Android. I hadn't thought of the possibility of using that together with a stereoscopic driver that presents the eyes side by side. Maybe it can be done?

FOGGING SOLUTION: Get Silica gel packets and stick them inside to heavily slow down fogging. 100% stopped it for me on my Vive (I'm using 5g packets, last 10-14 days for me depending on humidity). And duno about GearVR, but in vive you can't see these packets with headset on despite them being relatively close to your eyes. Absolutely no distraction. That stuff is also cheap, I got 500g (100x5g) for 10$ and it's gonna last me 4 years at the current rate.

I use the original Gear VR Innovator edition with my Note 4. I have a spare battery I can swap with in the phone which makes the battery drain bearable. I have found that if you have a Chromecast you can start the screen share feature before placing the phone into the headset and send the video out to a television or other devices to capture the video.

So a few months late, but I ended up snagging one of these with an S7 during the promotion. I've found you can actually use the mUSB-USB adapter the S7 comes with to plug a wired 360 controller in.

Cat Crap is a SERIOUSLY awesome anti-fog agent that lasts an absurdly long time due to the Carmex tub style of application. :)

Even though passthrough with camera is crappy on this thing, I bet that augmented reality would look cool in it. Even with all the lag and crappy FOV.

It seems like a $250 version of this would be the best thing, allows for the extras that are missing and improvements.

Wow, just a few days ago I was using this at Best Buy, which basically means spending an hour with the thing on my head. This is really cool, the only thing is that it requires a Samsung phone.

I would like to get into VR, and the pricing on VR is pricey but its not bad. Its just the fact that both Oculus, and Vive require high specs to just run the thing. I meet the minimal specs (GTX 970 and i7-4770), I know that smooth fps in VR is critical because any sort of stuttering can make someone sick. This is making me go on the DIY VR gear.

Strangely enough, it does burn your battery down when idle. Not sure why; it doesn't turn the screen on until it senses your eyes near, but it must still be running something. I forgot to pull the phone out of it one time. About two hours later, battery had gone from about 50% to zero. Agreed, the fogging is bad on mine too. All that said, I highly recommend the Gear VR anyway. It's definitely the highest quality mobile VR experience available.

I always thought VR would be some gimmick novelty thing like 3D movies, holy shit was i wrong, this is awesome, i got one with my s7 edge and it blew me away even just powered by a phone, it was a whole other level of immersive and this is the way of gaming's future and the future of a lot of forms of entertainment

... Your shelves make me miss the boxes for my old PC games. Unfortunately, I lost almost all of them while moving years ago. Ironically still have most of the games and manuals though. I did some weird stuff... DVD style cases just aren't the same...

Have you tried plugging in a chromecast in a hdmi recording device and then screen mirroring from your phone to the chromecast? It worked for me on my Note 2, it decreases the fps in games a bit but not near as much as you were suffering.

Well... honestly ... that vr-headset with its directional pad on the site .... if you could change or do some custom work for the case of the vr-headset it would be awesome because it could look like the special googles of cyclops from the x-men or the member of the starship enterprise with his cool looking shapes. xD

I personally don't see myself using VR on a phone, even if I had a Samsung phone instead of an iPhone right now. I'm more interested in VR on something like the PC, and even though we have two options for PC, I think I'll still go with the Oculus, mainly because the Steam one would only be good for games on Steam, and I like to have more options.

This looks interesting. Maybe phone hardware would be better in the next 1 or 2 years. Then I'll think about getting a Samsung phone and VR. Who knows, maybe LG might get onto this idea as well.
