...I feel like I am gonna spew, and I haven't even used it yet. The device itself reminds me of some of the devices used at places like Lenscrafters to check your sight and eye health. Can this thing give me my prescription? I would totally invest in one if it did that.

I think people who feel this way should still give the Oculus a chance. I guess it's normal to feel kinda sick when watching someone else play, but when you try it for yourself you probably wont feel sick at all ( not a guarantee though, everybody's different ), it's like how people who are prone to carsickness don't get sick when they're the driver since they have control and can predict the movements. I personally had a negative bias towards the DK2 like you guys but after trying it out for myself I was blown away.

The Lawnmower Man v. 2.0? :) Seriously-- your excitement is pretty cool to see. I'm a bit more of a believer after watching this piece than I was before, and it's honestly because of that enthusiasm. We've been down the VR road before, but this is different. There is a lot of potential, but the price for the mass market also has to be right in order for this to take off in a couple of years.

Do you know what the FOV of the positional tracking camera is? Having to set it up 2-3 feet behind your normal monitor position could be an issue for some people. I'm using a modified PS3 eye for head tracking which has about 75° of FOV and it's fairly easy to move outside its viewing cone unless I move my monitor back a little.

How clear were the cockpit instruments in War Thunder with OR DK2? Were they easy to read at a glance or did you have to look at them real close? I'm thinking of getting OR for flight sims when it comes out and I'm a bit concerned how the resolution of the screens holds up.

At this point in time, you have to move your head closer to the gauges to read them clearly. But if you're really used to them already, you can certainly tell what they say at a glance too.

No, DK1 demos don't work correctly on the DK2, they need to be written using the new SDK. Positional tracking in ED works if you disable the Oculus service entirely.

I owned a DK2. I didn't use it much. I couldn't find much software that supported it, other than little homebrew Unity things. Nowadays. I use Vive. Was it the DK1 or DK2 do you know? The DK2 improves that effect greatly, but it's definitely still got a ways to go and is distracting at first for sure. Certain games it's way more noticeable than others too...which is probably why games with tons of text and little details like Elite Dangerous didn't impress me much, but Proton Pulse with its stylized graphics sucked me in!

I tried the DK2 yesterday and I don't feel like that at all. :-) Your description sounds more like I would have described the DK1. For me the feeling of realness and presence overrules any shortcomings that are left. I didn't even notice the pixels most of the time. And when I did I found them rather charming and even reassuring in a kind of way. I don't know, maybe it really depends on the demo.

I'm curious about how you do a 180 degree turn while wearing this. I understand that your head turns independently of your controls, so if you turn your head 180 degrees (or nearly :-) ) do your controls catch up with the fact you've turned, or do you have to manually turn yourself on the keyboard. If so, doesn't the vision align with you having your head turned backwards causing in game to be body and vision aligned, while out of game body not in line with your eyesight? Im sure it's one of those things where it makes sense ad you're doing it, but not having used it I'm still kinda confused on the mechanics.
@Yusuke_Denton
@Yusuke_Denton 10 жыл бұрын
Like in real life, your head/eyes probably track on to an object and automatically recenter as your (in this case virtual) body turns. The experience will be less immersive for games that don't directly support the Rift but actually turn your virtual body and head together.

It depends greatly on what works, what doesn't and how much they /have/ to shed from the price point in a mass production situation. Honestly, I doubt the Base Package will have it; simply to keep the price to a point that people will be willing to pay. After all keep in mind this is a specialist device rather than a Display replacement; so chances are they're going to /have/ to hit a $180 (or less) price point. Personally I think what you're going to see are 3 Editions. Core Package (which is just the Headset) Premium Package (Headset + Tracking Camera) Immersion Package (Headset + Kinect for Windows / Xbox) ... Just my guess at what business model they'll go with, could be wrong. - | - Speaking a bit more about the preview itself... one thing I will say is I think most developers are approaching the Oculus the wrong way right now; as just like the Wiimote or Kinect. There is so much focus on making you so absolutely impressed graphically, to try to make you feel like you're actually in a virtual world; that honestly every single example often just fell flat to me; and the reason isn't so much the motion sickness problems that DK1 (and previous trade show versions) had ... but actually more the very simple fact that the more 'realistic' something is, the easier it becomes to find the flaws. This is true in graphics in general, but when those graphics are literally a few inches away from your eyeballs to the point where if you focus you can see the individual pixels; the fact is you're going to find even more flaws with what is happening. Throw in the Motion Disconnect, so any game that isn't a flawless 75Hz (which is what this is running at) for the Resolution you have chosen; and even the smallest performance spike not only immediately feels off, but becomes amplified in how noticeable it is. Yet that isn't necessary to really make people enjoy the technology ... we don't /need/ hyper realistic Flight / Fighter / Racing Simulations to get that enjoyable experience. As said in the Preview itself - the game that just feels the best right now is little more than a 3D Breakout clone, because there are no fancy graphics you want to see every detail of and it is using the technology in a creative way that doesn't stress out ANY hardware. It is just a fun, smooth experience that really showcases how good the technology can be. Those are the kinds of games that really need to focus on supporting the technology, things that are simple that the graphics aren't what you're sat there being impressed about the range of motion. This is technology that we have to be eased in to so either we no longer are so enamoured that we see the flaws, or developers get more comfortable with the technology that they can design around the limitations.

Leyvin360 If you think they're going to ship a version without head tracking, you've not been following the Rift _at all_. Head tracking is _almost_ the entire point. The entire reason they're doing this, the reason Palmer obsessed over it for years, the reason Carmack got on board, the reason they're taking their time, is because they want to usher in the age of VR. Without head tracking, it's not VR. The reason for the external camera is that it turns out it's one of the only ways to get head tracking right. An alternative is to put a camera on the headset and put tracking dots on the room (which they learned from Valve, who has their own VR research lab), but that is impractical for consumer product. So they put the dots on the headset and the camera in the room. Palmer and Co. have welcomed competitors in the market, like Sony, because again their goal is to usher in VR, not to make money. Palmer has stated that his fear of competitors is not that they'll get pushed out of the market (he'd love that -- it would mean VR is taking off), it's that they'll cut corners and not provide the best possible VR experience and slow the adoption of VR. They need this thing to achieve critical mass, so all the big players come in an pump billions into getting us closer to the metaverse/holodeck/matrix/whatever. There's a chance we might see a higher end version of the Oculus with higher res display, but head tracking is *not* on the chopping block. It's absolutely central to what they're trying to do.
@Leyvin
@Leyvin 10 жыл бұрын
ReductioAdAbsurdum I have no doubt that Oculus have a "Passion" for what they are doing (less so Carmack as frankly this is typical behaviour for him, he has found a new area of interest to throw himself at; Mega Textures, Armadillo, etc... the list does go on) There is nothing wrong with that either, because you know they /do/ want to put a quality product out there; but even with talent and passion for what you're doing - but at the end of the day here there are two extremely important factors at play. A • If you want your project to 'Start a VR Revolution' then you MUST create and maintain a large enough user base actually living up to the hype and then having Developers actually support it rather than being like "Oh this is amazing" supporting it for like a year then deciding that it isn't worth it. Kinect has 40+ Million Units on the Market, let that sink in for a moment. From a financial point of view, it was a "Success"; from a Commercial / Consumer point-of-view, despite v2 being vastly superior no one gives a shit. So much so that despite it being one of Microsoft's big announcements at Gamescom this week, NO ONE is reporting on the fact it just launched for Windows with full Indie Developer support. Simply getting A LOT of units of something out on the market, doesn't automatically guarantee success... and a "VR Revolution" will not only have to for the most part match what the Kinect did in sales figures but also be capable of maintaining public interest once the WOW-Factor wears off. And that honest is incredibly difficult. B • Facebook (or any Fortune 500 Company) doesn't throw $1+ Billion at a company, to not see a return on that investment. To put this in to perspective, the technology and cost of developing the Kinect for Microsoft was $280 Million over 5 years; which includes purchasing the company (Innovision) who were working on the core technology. Regardless of what business model that Oculus themselves follow, and no matter how 'hands off' Facebook usually is ... if it looks like they're going to lose money (A LOT of money) on an investment; they will simply either pull the plug to cut their losses, or do everything they can to ensure they make a profit. Look at Sony... the whole 'Project Morphius' honestly at this point doesn't matter how impressive or far along they are, in all honesty; they can't afford to release it and it NOT be successful. In all honestly, VR is a bad business deal; regardless of who is making it. It is just far to niche and expensive to be popular enough.

Leyvin360 "less so Carmack as frankly this is typical behaviour for him" Dude, Carmack as been passionate about this for *decades*. How do you think he heard about it? He was a regular lurker on the VR board where Palmer first mentioned his prototype. Carmack had numerous prototypes of his own (including attempts at direct retina projection) with nearly as many chopped-up, hacked-together prototypes as Palmer. This is not a side job. He fucking *quit Id* to be part of something he truly believes is the Next Big Thing. It's clear from your posts that have almost no idea what's going on at Oculus. To release a headset without tracking would be like Sony releasing a Playstation with no graphics card. Oculus is _not_ (merely) a head mounted display. Those already exist. This is a _VR headset_. The buzz around Oculus is _massive_. They can't keep up with demand for their _alpha_ hardware. Every gamer I know is chomping at the bit to buy one. It represents a qualitatively _new_ gaming experience, a level of immersion not possible with regular displays. Their ability to make money on this was guaranteed, but they needed operating capital to get there. They had funds from a variety of investors who placed heavier constraints on them that Facebook did. Part of the Facebook deal was buying all those investors out and restoring autonomy to Oculus. Palmer took the deal because he cares more about ushering in VR than making money. The cash from Facebook isn't going into buying Palmer a yacht, it's going into Oculus, finally giving them the power to fabricate their own hardware, designed for VR, rather than scavenging hardware from mobile phones. Carmack has had more money than he could spend (that Armadillo tested that) for decades. He's doing what he loves. You need to watch some interviews with Palmer and Carmack about the evolution of this technology, how important it is too them that they get it right, that when people experience Oculus they forget about the failed attempts at VR in the 90s.

Sooooo.... Was that an invitation to come over and try that thing? Lol great video. I'm not going to bother with a DK because when it fully releases, I won't know what to do with it. Can't wait for this thing though!

I suggested for you to play The Forest a while back, you said that you'd play it in a more fuller-less buggy state. The devs also plan on making it Rift-compatible. If you were to make a video on it would you use the Oculus?

So, when are we going to see your cat review the Oculus Rift box? What are its specs? Is it appropriately satisfying to chew on? Big enough to fit in? Did it come with the delightfully battable packing peanuts or those lame plastic popping sheets?

This is pretty much the most exciting piece of technology for me. When it's at the point where you can just get lost in a virtual world and it feels real, the possibilities are endless.

Most exciting piece of tech I can think of is full blow VR. You become a god by that point. VR is about when better then human AI should be. Full VR will also support uploading you self into a computer. As by then the Computer will be able to store that much info and it needs to to make VR feel 100% real. (Will True VR is a bit bellow transhuman AI and brain uploading but is not that far from it.) I hope I make it to that time when it becomes real.
