+1 to this. I'm also from RS and personally helped to restore a computer that was fully underwater for more than 20 days (and it was a really dirty water, with dead animals and etc.). Sad for the original boxes/manuals/etc., but surely there is hope for the electronics themselves.
@Easelgames29 күн бұрын
Most people don't realize that water isn't inheriently the issue with electronics, it's only damaging usually if power goes through it. If their is no power when stuff is FULLY dried then a lot can survive!
@SianaGearz29 күн бұрын
It's also important to open up and let dry optical media such that they're well separated. Otherwise the bootlet or packaging can fuse to the paint and then pull it off clean. Water can also diffuse into the mirror behind the lacquer on the data side and accelerate its degradation and delamination. Battery operated equipment is an issue. Hard disks are an issue. Optical and floppy drives can be rebuilt. Otherwise, electronics survives water ingress if it didn't have to sit moist very long.

@@jadedheartsz Similar to mine. Ours smashed the main power cable coupling, and the whole front veranda roof, and some of the top floor roof was buckled but not actually broken. One small hole from a branch right through our bedroom wall. Oddly not a single window smashed. Timber frame with concrete panel construction. Oddly it probably would have been worse if it were brick.

This is not specific to collections, but I've found that plastic boxes (like the ones seen at 10:30) do wonders for storing stuff. They protect from dust, water, bugs, overall physical damage from having weight on top and such, and if they're opaque, against UV light as well. And they're easy to stack, move around and organize. Of course, they also hide everything, so you won't be displaying what's inside, but if it's stuff you're not displaying, they're great. For particularly delicate stuff like important documents, Ziploc-style bags inside the plastic box.

Back in the late '80s / early '90s, my step-mom owned a Radio Shack franchise. It was very near a river, which had a "100-year flood" event. The stuff that wasn't literally washed away was -- quite surprisingly -- repairable by simply taking it all apart and washing each of the circuit boards and whatever plastic case it was in. I'd bet we managed to save 90% of the mud-covered devices we had? The one thing we could never seem to save was the VCRs -- those rotating head assemblies were completely ruined by the mud and silt. But stuff like the computers and electronic games? No problems at all. Obviously they could never be sold as new, but still -- it was quite interesting to see how much of the stuff we were able to save. I'd bet your arcade games will be similar -- just take them apart, clean them well, and dry them thoroughly before applying power to them again. Hopefully they'll all be good!
@marcel-q1m29 күн бұрын
Surprisingly enough electronics are saveable often times even if they get absoloutely soaked. I think issues usually occur when they are plugged in and get wet, then the water can really do damage you cannot fix simply by cleaning especially on newer more complicated stuff where if anything on a pcb breaks you just gotta toss the whole thing.
@Zack_Wester29 күн бұрын
@@marcel-q1m the biggest threat to electronic is stuff getting bent, the batteri/resisotr leaking. and power. you can in theory take a PC computer remove the CMOS dip it in a lake take it out clean everything out and dry it correctly and it will work.

And what I see is a ton of content possibilities - repair-a-thon videos, maybe collabs with others on repairs, and for the stuff that can't be salvaged, you'll be making room for new retro stuff that can be! I'm excited to see what comes but most of all I'm just glad you're okay both physically and mentally. That's the hardest part of all of this.
