I used to play this game all the time. I would spend hours in cruise mode with cars I downloaded from the MM2 website. I pretended to have my own house and workplace in the game. This review brought back some great memories of this game and my childhood, thank you.

I think I was 8 or 9 when I got my first computer. Dad had just bought a brand new Emachine for himself, so he put it in the computer room and gave me the old Aptiva. And for my very first PC game... he gave me Midtown Madness2. I wasn't allowed to have internet yet, but he hooked up his Emachine to my Aptiva through lan, installed MM2 on his computer , and then the two of us raised hell together on the streets of San Fransico. I can't even begin to count how many hours I must've spent driving around aimlessly in cruise mode. There was just so much random junk to see and explore. I also remember being so jealous because his machine could run it smoothly on the highest graphic settings while sometimes mine was barely chugging along on the lowest if I set the pedestrian count too high Between playing this, The Sims, and Earthsiege 2, my first computer was a blast. (I know what you're thinking here: (Earthsiege? But wasn't Starsiege out already by then?) That's because my mom thought it seemed too scary for me, so I had to wait another year or two before playing it. Sorry for the little bit of ramble, it's just that this was one of THOSE handful of unforgettable first PC games for me.

I don't have the box anymore, but I still have the disc. My dad went out of his way to figure to mod the game for me so i can have fun with broken cars. I remember the terrible, terrible grinding for those nice cars... this game also made the classic ford mustang fastback my favorite car. Also, when I was a kid, I always thought that unreachable backgrounds like the rest of Marin County and the Bay Bridge were actually visitable places, so I tried my best to find ways to glitch out of bounds to go there, only to realize that they are flat backdrops and there is only gray ground/water beyond the boundaries of the map.

Marcin Misiek I was always looking for ways out of the bounds of the maps and ways to get on to rooftops and other places you weren't supposed to go. Then I discovered the Virtual Killer. You can get just about anywhere with it since it can use walls as ramps if you hit them at the right angle.

Nice & solid video, & mentioned plenty of what i wrote a while back to get the game running along with the modding community & gamemodes. Its still fun to pass the time in a classroom running multiplayer playing cops & robbers setting to run the same car with the wonky physics engine & in general trolling you can do with various obstacles or teaming up to steal the stuff from the other players.

I miss the whole Midtown series. You're right, to many games like "The Crew" shove pointless story and characters into games that should be about fast cars, exploring cool cities, and causing mayhem.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes that could be considered good; but in The Crew in particular, there is absolutely no point in having a fixed player character. For single player campaign, he or she could just as well been customizable, with the customization carrying over into multiplayer. There is no intrinsic appeal to the character nor much in terms of prerendered cutschenes that couldn't be directed differently if the character wasn't fixed. There's this aspect of these games that just keeps getting worse. These developers can't do stories, so arguably they shouldn't try. The Crew being a sequel of Test Drive Unlimited, in a way, different company names, but related technology and same developer team... TDU, you have no story, but mad races and exploration keeping he thing appealing. Sure the game has flaws, but they're not too distracting overall. You progress simply by levelling or gaining money, doing whatever is fun to you. In TDU2 they tacked on a story, and while it's not too intrusive unlike later games, story driven missions are badly designed and the forced exploration just sucks. In The Crew, they made exploration aspect and story driven races better, but the story is borderline obnoxious, just like it is in NFS games that really work better without one - the stories never had a motivational advantage, the exciting setpieces and tracks did. Plus the social component in TDU2 really worked for the most part, it doesn't in The Crew, it's best played alone. I think something like a mix of NFSW and TDU2 needs to come about, and i'm actually working on something in this regard, but I don't have enough to show, and when I do (could take years) i'll likely present it on the Turboducks forum to solicit feedback. The goal is to make something fully moddable - your own islands, your own vehicles, your own gameplay styles, so people can just create an open world racing game they like and reuse each other's assets to accomplish it efficiently, and leave out the typical industry bullshit. One common theme is that people just hate half baked heartless shit being forced down their throat, but otherwise people will never agree on what kind of game they would like, but they shouldn't have to.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 7 жыл бұрын
EximiusDux there's absolutely nothing that I enjoy in a game more than a well told story! It doesn't even have to be too intricate, it just has to make its punches count. But I play story driven games, I read novels occasionally. If I had to name my all time favourite game, it would probably be Day of the Tentacle, and I absolutely loved playing L.A. Noire and Broken Age recently, and I think Tomb Raider reboot is one example of game storytelling in a non story centric genre that I can name of the recent ones that was actually well executed. Thing is, well I haven't played most of the more recent Need for Speed games, I played The Run and forgot what else, but does any of them, in your opinion, do storytelling right, do storytelling well? I'm going to give an example, certainly of doubtful relevance given it's well over 20 years old now, but it does tell us something. The very first Road&Track Presents: the Need for Speed. The original release for ill fated 3DO console, it had the rival as FMV actor in a parking lot talking smack and challenging you. Everyone hated him, they took him out for re-releases, so you can directly compare the game reception and impact. So did he do anything in the first place? He was there to make you hate The Rival, to up the stakes, but they just tightened up the ruthless AI so whatever mistake you make, at the later deciding levels near the end of the multi part tour, he will overtake you, so you're gonna hate him automatically. The same thing the "story" pretense does, conveyed through gameplay, much better. Games are interactive experiences - while they are conductive to tell a story, a mindless game with a trivial narrative tacked onto it is still a mindless game, and a challenging but not punishing game without an attempt at narrative is still inherently rewarding. Sure a good narrative can make anything better, but that's not something I can provide, nor am I aware of a good precedent in this specific genre so far, and I think if something is to be done, it shouldn't just be there, it has to actually be good, or at least have a chance of being good at development stages and culled away before release if it doesn't hold up.

Let's not even talk about all those "brofist" type of games like Dirt 3 and it's ginkana BS, or the NSF game with the cringey actors... Sometimes more is less, Midtown Madness let you in control of exploring that huge city, that was so awesome back then !

I have never been a big PC gaming fan when it comes to retro games at lease because my family was super poor growing up so the first PC i ever owned i had a co worker build for me in the late 90's when i was working at a blockbuster video of all places for $250. I don't watch any other PC gaming videos on KZbin except for LGR and that is a sign to me that you are the best at what you do. I'm a huge fan, i have watched most of your videos now and they are all very informative and entertaining. Wish my games collection could compare to your massive wall of big box PC games. I lost most of my collection when i was around 19/20 because of theft. And now game prices are through the roof and i'm a low wage making back breaking manual laborer so it's hard to buy anything for myself these days. But i am happy when watching your reviews and other videos on PC hardware and gaming, keep up the good work!

I always enjoy your reviews - you have the right balance of criticism and sarcasm. I spent many hours playing this game, both solo and with a friend in co-op - mostly on the SF map (having lived there for a few years). It's amazing how our imagination would convert those pixels to real-world images. And I was an adult at the time (I'm probably older than your parents). If you haven't already covered it, I would love to see a video about Crusader: No Remorse. I still remember how amazing it was to be able to shoot and destroy boxes and walls - that was a huge milestone in gaming. Cheers!

What's worse is it's not even backwards compatible on later generations of Xbox (360 and One) and emulation is still not there yet for this game, so the only way to play MM3 is on an Original Xbox!

@@AymanTravelTransport I remember my Mum bought me that for my 360 years ago now. My Disc got laser burnt which meant it crashed that games a lot also the mods I had didnt help. Anyway I put in my 360 and an error came up saying that the disc wasnt supported. Im glad because the magic wasn't the same at all if you not what I mean.

Jebus... $50 on Ebay if you own just the jewel case and CD-rom... $200 IF YOU HAVE IT WITH THE BOX!!!! My gawd... $150 just for cardboard. I still have this CD-Rom in my collection, but like most gamers from the 90's and early 2000, these PC boxes took up so much room we ended up just throwing them in the trash and placing the jewel case in a CD rack.

So ive decieded play the games, and Someone installed full version of Midtown Madness 2 on my used computer COOL! Ive always enjoed plowing traffic with Freightliner big rig :) when some nearby friends ask me name of game, Ive joked Its Driver 3 :D but Driver 3 or Driv3r are not made in 2002 yet. Anyways I never had this game at my home besides demo version, But ive enjoyed Midnight Club series, Mostly 3 Dub Edtion Remix :) hyper tuned chooper motocyle freeroaming streets of Detroit awsome, Besides chopper, ive had fondness to Mclaren F1 its my favorite sportscar from childhood. if any game had playable(Or offer mods to bring that car) Mclaren F1 I must drive it! :D

I was 12 when it was first release and let me tell you the story of a turkish kid at that time.. At year 2000 i had my circumcision surgeon done. In turkish culture if you had circumcision , your parents usually give party to the relatives and friends and you usually dress as a wizard and lie down on the bed, face the stupid jokes such as “did doctor cut it all or just tiny a bit?” And so on. During this party, relatives and friends give you some money so you can buy things. Ofc with the help of my lovely family i bought a hp pc and sidewinder precision racing wheel. I was a pc noob cause it was my first pc and didnt know how to connect it to the usb. It was so obvious none of my friends were asking me the question but i was connecting it to another port. Probably printer port i dont remember. It doesnt even fit i m so stupid. Anyway, when i finally connected it my life has changed. I played it A LOT. 5 hours a day, whole week. Oh btw, i was a good student either. My parents are lovely they let me play it as much as i wanted. Then i discovered to download car skins and played with them as well. Sf cruise mode was the best and ofc cadillac eldorado was my fav. Ahhh midtown madness 2 i truly miss you...

This brings back memories, 'cnr' with City Bus getting stuck down some alley I think may be the most fun I've had playing online. Knew the maps by heart, the hours I would spend being a bus just doing a commute. A few years ago I through out all my games, boxes were long gone, nothing of collectable value, but MM2 was alone in surviving the cull and watching this and reading the comments I think I made the right choice. I'll probably never play again but my god it was good.

I spent a lot of my early PC years (born 1991 - no PC until 1998) playing this multiplayer via Zone (MSN Games). We were on dial-up 56k internet and I used to get shouted at by my dad if I didn't reconnect to the internet by the 59th consecutive minute or if I tried to connect when he was using the house phone. I remember a lot of people (me included) using modified cars and it was always amusing seeing the classic Mini flying around the map at breakneck speeds if it was a car you hadn't downloaded because the mini was used as a place holder. There was a skyscraper in San Francisco that was full of slanted windows on one side, if you could get on to those in a fast car you could use the entire building as a giant ramp. I haven't thought about most of that in years, so this has been a great rememberence comment for me 😂
