Hey. I was the lead programmer on SimCopter! Reading thru all these comments -- I Never knew! LOL. We were going to do a SimCopter2 with a more realistic helicopter flight model but EA bought Maxis and it never happened. All resources went into doing the original Sims game...Remember -- this game was developed before 3D graphics cards hit the scene so it was pretty limited vis a vis the graphics were concerned as everything 3D had to be done in software. A lot of the game, especially the graphics was written in Assembler language for best performance. Will Wright and I took a real helicopter flight lesson to research stuff for a possible SimCopter2. Thanks for all the comments from players who loved the game. It was really rushed and unfinished because Maxis absolutely NEEDED to have a game come out for Xmas. There was so much more we wanted to do! And Yes! This game I felt was definitely a precursor for the likes of Grand Theft Auto I thought. I was mainly responsible for the overall gameplay, helicopter controls and the 3D engine written in Assembler, and for importing Sim City 2000 cities into SimCopter.

The thing I remember about this game was, it wouldn't let you walk off the edge of a building, so if you walked to the edge your pilot would just put his hands in the air and go 'AaaaaAAaAA' like he was scared of falling off. Once, I got out of my chopper too close to a phonebox, so I ended up on top of the phonebox. The game counted this as 'being too close to the edge of a building' on all sides, so it wouldn't let me move at all, my guy just stood there on top of that phonebox, waving his arms in the air and loudly FREAKING OUT. In my mind he's still up on that phonebox to this day. Also I'm pretty sure you could turn into a dog?

The dog thing was with the "superpowermultiply" cheat code. You'd activate the dog part by holding Shift down if you were outside the helicopter, at which point you'd run very very fast. I used to work in games journalism from 2006-2011, and every single time I ran into Will Wright at some event or had an interview scheduled with him, the first question I would always ask is "Could you please make a new Sim Copter?" He started anticipating it, eventually. Also you forgot to mention and/or emphasize that the game was capable of converting a 2D-isometric SimCity 2000 map into a fully navigable and destructible 3D environment, with matching buildings and roads and everything else. It was incredibly awesome to be able to take a city you'd been building for weeks or months in SimCity 2000 and suddenly be able to explore it in *3D* in a helicopter or on foot. ALSO, any damage you cause to the city is saved to the file when you close the game, and if you open up that city again in SimCity 2000, the damage (and state) will be persistent. Buildings will be rubble and fires will be burning if you save the game without putting them out first. ALSO, if you use the Apache to blow up the Nuclear power plant, it will explode in an atomic blast and destroy the entire city (which will be reflected in SimCity 2000, as well). A really amazing, remarkable game. I wish we had something similar these days for the new SimCity and/or Skylines, but the game industry just isn't that awesome anymore. This was the real Golden Age of PC gaming.
@auravisionsdeluxe28852 жыл бұрын
Really cool for a game back then! Honestly the SimCity 2000 save file integration in this game and Streets of SimCity have are pretty cool! It is kinda like how you can import some of your saves from RTC 1/2 to RTC classic, but at a more interesting level. Just imagine this being applied to other games, like a Minecraft mod that puts your saved cities in the game as a randomly generated structure! Some of the stats of that save file can even affect the game, like perhaps you needing to defeat a giant monster when a monster was on the save file.

NJRoadfan Yup, I skipped out on talking about the specifics of the patch because the result isn't worth much.

NJRoadfan : the dgVoodoo 2 wrapper isnt only 3dfx, its support very old direct x application as well. if you just drag and drop the files from the dgvoodoo zip file, and the ddraw.dll file, that include. simcopter will run in 640x480 directx mode with the wrapper witout complaining. try it out. also you can use a ps3 controller as well with Motionjoy ds3tool. config it right and you can use analogue stick too

The fact you can build entire cities on Sim City and then fly around them in Sim Copter itself was one of the most mind blowing experiences of my youth.

We need a Sim Copter for Sim City 4.

The best thing about SimCopter was that you could open your SimCity maps in it and fly around your own created cities! Amazing to see your 2D city in 3D for the first time!

I'm hoping for a sequel: SimClopter. What happens when you merge horse and helicopter? Heliclopter.

I remember this game. I was a huge fan of SimCity2000 and when this came out I got it as a gift from my dad. I remember having a PC just able to play it and was so excited. And then I immediately crashed the first helicopter because I was bad and I couldn’t afford a new copter so I just gave up on it and returned to SimCity2000.

So basically this game, if it was combined with Streets of SimCity, would become Babies First GTA, complete with a Hot-Coffee easter egg? :D

I gave another shot to searching this game after 7-8 years.Pity nothing comes up when you query SimCity2000 helicopter, but so glad I finally found this game that captured a very happy period in my childhood. I was 7 when I first played this in 2001 and as I watched memories resurfaced in a flash as if they never left. Heartfelt thanks man

Well it's called SimCopter not SimCity2000 Helicopter so that would be your problem. It doesn't work well on modern OS's and while a couple have some workarounds you still more than likely will experience a CTD somewhere. Best best if you do get a copy is to load it on a tower with the supported OS or run it through VM and even then it's not guaranteed to work well but it's definitely a blast regardless.

I had that Maxis Games box that had SimCopter and I LOVED THAT GAME! So much fun and I loved the bizarre walk/scuttle animation. I got the speedo men in my game a couple of times and didnt think much of it! Just, "oh that's random" and noticed my sim could hug them and I found that hilarious. Such a shame how rushed it was and how overblown the reaction was.

"I'd like a room with a shower please." Spamming messages over the megaphone was one of the most amusing feature of the game. If you did it enough since Sims would even shoot at your chopper. I've been wishing for years that they would re-release/update/make a new version of SimCopter. I would buy it in a heartbeat if they did.

I know this is way late to the party, but I just found this video looking for a legit retro review of SimCopter to see whether the nostalgia goggles were on too tight. This might be a case of the very few games I fondly remember being legitimately pretty groundbreaking, thanks so much for the review!

Why, in 1996, was it controversial for a game to feature men in speedos kissing? And why was this seen as harmful to children whereas the man designing the sim models was told to model women in bikinis? Surely you could just recreate this in the Sims if you so pleased anyway. It's all rather bizarre that it would escalate to such an extreme that the came would even be recalled.
@LGR9 жыл бұрын
Pearcey80 That was many years before The Sims. Back then, Maxis had never made a game with anything sexual in it, and largely made games that appealed to educational institutions and children. Plus, management at the time was known to be pretty unreasonable. It was a different time in the company.
@SaintCyrX9 жыл бұрын
Pearcey80 it was 1996. It was big deal when Ellen came out... It was noted when ANY media portrayed homosexuality (watch the Seinfeld episode with "not that there's anything wrong with that" to understand the changes that were going on).
@icecold18056 жыл бұрын
Dude, back then most doctors "treated" homosexuality in ways today its not legal to even torture war prisoners. Back then having gay represented in any form of media was a huge controversy.

The nostalgia really kicked in when I saw the disc after you opened the CD case, suddenly memories of my 10 year old self spending HOURS fighting fires, chasing criminals, and making people sick while flying them to their destinations in everything from the cheap starter Schweizter (or whatever the hell it was called) up to that big Dauphin. Got this game from Scholastic if memory serves, back when scholastic did the school orders for educational PC games.
@DeyvsonMoutinhoCaliman4 жыл бұрын
Ah, the 90's, when you could make a lot of right wing situations in a game, but the left wing one is the one that brought controversy.
