Incidentally, in real life the Spanish Inquisition gave you 30 days notice because they were hoping you'd flee Spain and they could take your house, as their were a money-making scheme by the Spanish crown. So, *everybody* expected the Spanish Inquisition.

Most people seem to miss the final joke of the movie. They sacked the guy who did the credits at the beginning of the movie, so that's why it's only a black screen with the music at the end.

This movie was *massive* in the late 70s and early 80s geek/nerd culture. We watched it a bunch of times and went around quoting it all the time. "Help! I'm being repressed!", "It's just a flesh wound.", "He's not to leave, even if you come and get him", "Go away or I will taunt you a second time." (plus several of the taunts), "I got better", "Let me face the peril!", etc. etc. etc.

Yea. In the 7th Sea Roleplaying game one of the rules is that anyone quoting Monty Python gives the GM extra dice to add to NPC rolls to use against players. That is, the game has a Dice Pool that all the players share that they can take dice from and they add dice with good roelplaying but the way you add to the GM pool is the players doing inordinately silly or bad things, which quoting Monty Python is an example :)

The intermission is a troll of the audience. Intermissions were common enough back then so people would get up and go to the restroom, get snacks, etc. So when the intermission came up, people would start walking down the aisles and headed out and then the short intermission was over so they'd have to all run back to their seats.

They might have stuck an intermission in for that reason, but it has basically no bearing on what the original guy said. Yes it was a troll and yes it was effective.

The ending is a troll of themselves, as well. Monty Python was notorious for not knowing how to end a skit. So many ended with a silly toss away line. So the ending of this movie is a, literal, cop out.

Fun Fact: Before Star Wars in 1977, industry standard was to put the credits before the movie. They tried to force Lucas to conform but he refused, saying it would ruin the immersion. They threatened to sue everyone involved in the movie but Lucas said he would pay all fines and penalties incurred.

Not quite like that... Having ALL the credits at the beginning of the film used to be the standard for decades, but by the 70's the standard had already changed to the one we have nowadays: showing the main credits at the beginning (main actors, producers, director of photography, music composer, editor, writer, director) and then at the very end the whole closing credits. What happened with Star Wars was that Lucas refused to have ANY credits at all at the beginning for the reason you mentioned, but it wasn't even the first time that had happened in all-time classic. As early as in 1941 "Citizen Kane" had already done that.

The man playing "Patsy" (Arthur's sidekick) is legendary film director Terry Gilliam. Terry was a member of Monty Python from Day One as "the animator", responsible for all the animation sequences. He rarely got any on-screen action - except in this film :)

Fun facts: This movie had several cuts before settling on the version we know today. Originally it starts with the "Bring out yer dead" scene. -They couldn't afford horses (hence the coconuts) or any kind of musical interludes; which is why Prince Harold's escape song is cut off. -They could only afford to shoot one castle, so they shot the same castle at different angles and sections, to make it look like several castles. -They could only afford to shoot one castle interior. So they chose the best room and dressed / shot it differently for each scene. -The *Killer Bunny* is a staple in numerous fantasy games, ranging from tapble top D&D to many JRPGs... Even Minecraft has one! -Lancelot's run was based on a samurai movie. The actor was not as far as he looked, so they made him run the path several times and spliced it together, to make it look like one big run. Technically the movie is a *slice of life* story. We don't get a beginning nor an ending... We just get the middle piece!

Another KZbin reactor apparently knew the story of the Trojan horse because she once said "Is this some sort of Trojan horse situation?" when she saw what could have been a deceptive plan to get past the protagonists' defenses in a movie, but she didn't make the connection when she saw the giant wooden rabbit in Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Sometimes you know things, but the light bulb just doesn't go on.

The "vorpal rabbit" as it has come to be known (that name taken from Lewis Caroll's the Jabberwocky) has become a huge trope in many fantasy stories and video games as a joke. From the video game Shadow Warrior having a bunch of killer rabbits in one stage, to the MMO World of Warcraft having the rare monthly spawn of the "Darkmoon Rabbit" which is a vicious dangerous little rabbit that takes 20-30 (at least) max level players to defeat.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus was the name of the comedy TV show starring these guys, so the name Monty Python became that of the troupe. They made several other movies, and I’d recommend any of them if you like this type of humor.

I see this with many youngsters nowadays. I wonder if humour has changed and that it has become too literal to understand this kind of humour. Or it is very personal may be. When I saw that it was Tori and Toy that were reacting to this, I couldn't wait until the 'famous historian's' death scene. The sword chop to the neck and how it comes out of nowhere... 😂 Oh, and Toy's "Oh my tummy" line when the French were dumping their toilets onto them at the end... Priceless!! You ladies never disappoint and it was so much fun seeing you react to the joyous absurdity that is this movie. I love how Tori even found a new theme song for the channel in the closing moments. Thank you both for making my day! I can always count on this channel for a great time.

in the monk scene tpwards the beginning, it was rumored (at least back in the 90s) that all the monks pranked one of them so that one of them was actually hitting himself on the head... if you look closely, you can see one of them stumble as they pan out

36:36 I took a class at work where the instructor used sound bites from this scene during the quizzes. If we got a question right, we’d hear “off you go then”; if wrong “blue no green aaaaahhhh”. Of course for me, being somewhat colorblind, answering my favorite color is not easy. I love this movie. I think I watch it maybe two or three times each year, I've probably watched it over fifty times. All my friends and I know it by heart and will often break into lines from the film, especially when the beers start to flow . What's particularly funny is watching the uninitiated discover Monty Python for the first time! 😅 Thank you ladies.

That has to be one of the best reactions to this movie I've ever seen. Right till the very end, when the two of you (coincidentally) sang together in unison: "Run To The Movies". I've never seen a reactor laugh as hard, and throughout the movie, as much as Toy did, right from the beginning. The killer rabbit scene......it was like watching myself watch it for the first time! You HAVE to do their next movie, "Life Of Brian", which is a masterpiece. And their last movie, "The Meaning Of Life" is also worth doing, although most of us think either Holy Grail or Life Of Brian are their best movies. And they started as a wild, groundbreaking TV series, half-hour a piece. At the very least, Toy should watch the classic series off the channel because she is most obviously, definitely an instant Python fan! Not that both of you guys were great in this reaction! I always love your reactions, always a real fun time.

This is one of the only Medieval documentaries to use actual archival film footage from the Middle Ages and European Swallows and an actual historian, well it briefly had an actual historian. Monty Python is a British comedy group from the 70's, they used to have a comedy show called Monty Pythons Flying Circus that ran on PBS in America many years ago. They are all crazy, and most of it makes no sense, but it is funny. And they rode fake horses because the budget for the movie was so small they could not afford real horses.

There is a lot of mention of lack of budget for actual horses. Yes that is true but also all the extras and stunt people to ride them since I don’t think John Cleese or Eric Idle or Michael Pallin or Terry Gilliam were equestrians. Not to mention the insurance but I wouldn’t be surprised if the coconut idea was original regardless of budget. Real horses were not funny like skipping along whilst clicking coconuts together.

The man who acts as King Arthur Graham Chapman was a full qualified doctor but never worked a day as a doctor. He was gay and died of aids. They made 4 movies, “Monty Python and The Quest for the Holy Grail.” “Monty Pythons The Life of Brian” - considered by most as the funniest movie ever made. “The Meaning of Life” and “Now for Something Completely Different.” Which was a series of the best comedy sketches from their English TV show of the same name. The movie contains the world famous hilarious sketches, “The Dead Parrot” “The Cheese Shop” and “The Argument” also “The Lumberjack sketch/Song” they also made a film of their live performance at the Hollywood Bowl. It made my heart glad to hear you two laughing at this movie. I would not have expected anyone from your generation to find it funny. The weird thing is, you didn't get any of the jokes, and yet you still laughed at them. Monty Python is a troupe of six guys that had a TV show on the BBC in England. It was called Monty Python's Flying Circus and it ran from 1969 through 1974. When it ended in Britain, it started running in the US on PBS. I started watching it right away, and it's the funniest stuff ever filmed. When this movie came out, it wasn't merely made by the guys from Monty Python, but also in the style of the Flying Circus, which is different than comedy that is made today. But you laughed, and that's the whole point. By the way, there is one horse in the movie. When Sir Launcelot killed the "Famous Historian," he was riding a horse. But, yes, that's the only one. Also, did you notice that nearly all the parts were played by the same six guys? You are apparently familiar with John Cleese. He played Sir Launcelot, but also the Black Knight, the taunting French Knight, Tim the Enchanter, the guy who puts the old man on the cart for the dead, and the guard that suggests an African Swallow could carry a coconut. The rest of the guys also played multiple parts.

I love how much better this movie works on streaming than when it was released, as people try to fix the subtitles. The only thing missing was the VHS tape had 30 minutes of black video after the movie... of which I watched every frame to see if there was more movie.

Funny thing is they wanted real horses for the movie but did not have the budget for them so one of them suggested to make a joke out of it and bang coconuts together for the sound of the houses in there instead.

In the 1980's this movie was a regular staple at the Midnight Shows in theaters we used to have back then. Like you I had no idea who they were the first time I saw it and I was nearly in the floor laughing... and also very high, one of the best nights of my young life.
