Except the people who bought it, wanted to buy it. And if they won't admit they were wrong, they'll drag us all down into the abyss with them again. And again, and again. This is who Britain is; the remnants of an Empire built on white supremacy. That's the only way Brexit makes any sense, unless you think a nation spontaneously decided to strangle itself. And until that fundamental, ludicrous, and dangerous bigotry is dealt with, it will continue to fester and attack the body politic. Yes, the people who sold it were well-funded liars with ulterior motives. Yes, the people who bought it were lied to and manipulated. But they wanted to be. They had every opportunity, including that provided by a basic grasp of reality, to realize that it's impossible to simply wish your garden full of unicorns, but they got on-board with those obvious lies anyway, because it gave them a chance to feel superior without having to do any work. There's nothing admirable in that; quite the opposite. And while the people at the top should get far more of the blame, there's more than enough to go around, and will be, apparently, for the foreseeable future. This isn't going to get better. That's where James is both tremendously wrong, and, honestly, being quite self-serving and naive in exactly the way MLK described "white moderates" as being; this is exactly who these people are, and always were. Nobody waved a wand and made all these people bigots overnight. British (and Western) culture has rot at its core, and unless it is excised, it will be fatal. For everybody.

Maybe there are American radio hosts that do this, but I'm not aware of any.
@jcdenton72423 жыл бұрын
Just an observation. 3 points people constantly criticise O'Brien on in the comments. 1. He interrupts the caller. Most of the time O'Brien does this because the caller starts the argument by saying something that isn't true. So O'Brien stops them before they carry on. For example if I was to say: "Everybody knows the moon is made of cheese, so because of that I think...." There's no point allowing the person to continue as the rest of the sentance is irrelevant. The usual responds he gets is "You're not letting me finish!" or "Says who, I don't believe that" or "MSM blah blah" 2. He asks his callers to explane what they mean. An example of this is, there was a caller who rang up to say "Jeremy Corbyn is a cultural marxist". O'Brien stopped him to ask what do you mean. The caller got very angry. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask someone what they mean with the words THEY choose to use. If you want to understand their POV then you need to understand what they mean first, The usual responds he gets is "You know what I mean" or "Your just being awkward" 3. Points out the callers ignorance on the subject they phoned up on. For example there were many in the brexit debate. "I voted for brexit because of EU laws" O'Brien simply asks name one. Sure anyone can have an opinion on anything without knowing all the facts but you can't make the case for why you're pro or against somethig without even knowing what they are. A lot of people say that they agree with O'Brien but don't like the way he says things that you belittles or patronizes people. I think if a caller has a genuine point to make but struggles to use the right words and O'Brien is mocking them, then fine I would agree with that argument. But lets be clear all the callers who ring up are all adults and it's their chose.

My favourite brexit myth, was it was EU laws that took away newspaper wrapped fish. I moved just before brexit D-day to an EU country, thinking of opening a chip shop that wraps orders in newspaper, making it a big part of the marketing, all other tourists get newspaper , but when brits come, wrap it in different paper and just say, "sorry, brexit" and shrug
