Hickok, I own the PF9 and have no problems with the mags. I would suggest that you send your gun back to Kel Tec. They will fix the problem. Also the mags should all hold 7 rounds with no problem. The springs may be tight. If after leaving them filled for a couple of week they do not loosen up send them back also. BTW Kel Tec has fantastic customer service.

@kaaajeee , The baby Glocks are in a different class. They are thicker but easier to shoot well. These guns will serve the purpose pretty well, but the Baby Glocks are essentially as effective as any full-size firearm.

Nobody talks about the fact that Kel-Tec innovated in every single way, and all Ruger did was make exact copies of their designs and sell them for a higher price. It's easy to spend all your time on refining a great design when you don't have to do any of the heavy lifting of actually designing it. Ruger is a much larger company, so they can afford to have better quality control. Kel-Tec is tiny, and still manages to beat the big guy. Not to mention the fact that Ruger models are overloaded with safeties, and Kel-Tec is a straight up, no bones about it firearm. Go ahead, and knock Kel-Tec all you want. If it wasn't for them, Ruger wouldn't have the lineup of guns they do today. Why praise the imitator when you could reward the innovator and get them to the level of the big boys?

Ruger is pretty famous for that. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and you know that if Ruger had to rip off a design, it was a good design.

Bfresh99 Can't agree with you there. I carried a PF-9 for a couple of years. Kept dumping ammo through it hoping it would "break in" and quit jamming. It got worse the more I shot it. Finally dumped it a a gun show and bought an LC9. The Ruger has been outstanding and is now by EDC. I'm glad to hear your PF-9 has been good for you and I hope you get many years of service out of it. Just saying my experience was much worse than yours.

Alright, amigos, I can't comment on the Ruger because I don't have one. I do deep carry a PF-9 and have had no difficulties with feed or mags. I do have a theory, however. Being a small weapon with lots of recoil a big fellow like kickok45 hits the mag release because his hands do not have room for a different grip. If you have feed problems you are limpwristing the gun. It means you either have problems with your grip or you are not as experienced as you think you are. As you can see hickok has no feed problem because he provides a stable platform. After watching this I began to take extra notice of hand placement to not only avoid hitting the release but also to prevent riding the slide, another problem with small guns. Other than that it really depends on budget and bias. If it is all you have you will shoot it a lot and become proficient.

According to industry insiders, Kel-Tec's patented AMR system was originally designed to use retinal scanning technology coupled with grip surface conductivity sensors to initiate the automatic magazine release, but that would have made the PF9 too costly to compete with Ruger's LC9.

Firstly, I really appreciate your videos. They are informative, unbaised and you share a wealth of firearms knowledge with the general public. I have owned both the PF9 and the LC9S Pro. I eventually sold the LC9S Pro and kept the PF9. While I liked the Ruger, it had several feed issues and also shot grossly low from the point of aim by me and several other people who tried it. When I had the two to compare side by side, I loved the lower weight of the PF9 and also the feel of the gun. The Ruger is very slippery and does not offer good checkering around the entire grip as you mentioned. To date, I have put around 1000 rounds through my PF9 and it functions flawlessly. I added a Northwood Anodized Trigger to my PF9 and couldn't be happier with it's performance.

A little work with an emery board on the tip of the trigger and a Hogue handall jr grip to lessen the recoil a bit might sway you towards the Pf 9. By the way, I did receive from Kel-Tec yesterday (3-5-11) the supposed fix on the mag release. The instructions for replacement are a full page of very small print from a bad copier that I can barely read. There appears to be about 40 steps outlined. I'll try to get motivated to read this thing and tackle the job one day soon.

Hey Hickok45, After countless hours researching the PF9, I decided to just buy it the moment I saw it available. When I snagged the chrome model, I went straight to the range to break it in and to have fun with my brand new G27. 150+ rounds and the PF9 ate every load from Winchester crapbox to Federal to Golden Sabre to +P loads. Not one failure. The G27 had one FTE. I guess I should dump the Glock right lol? Of course I kid, the Glock kicks ass. Keep the vids coming-great job!

Thank you Hickock...this was a great, unbiased video review. Considering what is tested here I will be purchasing a PF9 with a mag release upgrade. I don't have hand sausages as big as yours, so the trigger guard will not be an issue. Ruger as well as some other manufacturers have gone overboard with safety features trying to compensate for owners lack of responsibility and firearms safety. Not that it is a bad thing to be "safe," but common sense plays a huge role. Thank you, so much for another honest review!

I have both a Ruger LCP and LC9. The LC9 is marginal pocket carry, especially with the mag finger extension, which tends to get caught when removing the pistol from a front pocket. That being said, it has acceptable hitting power, and I LIKE the idea of having a loaded chamber with a safety. The safety is wide and sturdy enough and after being used during the break-in period (about 200-250 rounds), is acceptably easy to engage/disengage. However, I usually carry the LCP due to its size.

I picked up the Ruger LC9 today. I like it a lot. I have big hands and the pistol fists real well in it. It shoots real well. I put 60 rounds thought it and first a 10ft and the hold is where you point it. At 21ft you have to hole a little high to get it is the "X" say the 8 ring. I had no problems with the recoil. The tiger is is very long. The break is all the way back. If you shoot Glocks, it will take some getting use to. Good gun. Thanks Mr Hickok for the review. Your why I got it.

Thanks for the video! I'll stick with the Kel-Tec for now. I like the simpler design with less to go wrong. I don't want a loaded chamber indicator (I just always consider it loaded), I don't want a thumb safety to forget under stress, and I don't want a magazine safety. I also don't want to have to use a tool to disassemble the firearm. But that's me. If I still lived in California, I'd get the Ruger because it's 50 state legal. In the end, it's great that we have the options we do today.

Safety is the most important thing when it come to weapons IMO. You can always choose to leave the safety off if you really need the extra 0.1 second to not actuate it. But to be able to make a weapon SAFE from fire when in my pants (using inside pants holster) is priceless.

@Hickok45 I have carried the pf9 for years. I put Talons on it because you always spoke highly of them. They make ns for them and have trigger upgrades for it but on a defensive gun I'm not altering any triggers with a lighter pull. Pretty much a get off me gun. In shooting it I feel its a point and fire weapon. I'd be happy with a trench style setup on it but its a great companion especially in the summer. It just disappears very well! Nice review as always sir!

First off, my thanks to you and John for committing so much time and effort to creating and maintain a family-friendly shooting channel. Note: Kel-tec lists the weight of the PF9 as 12.7 oz while Ruger lists the LC9 as 17.1 oz--a 4.4 oz difference. Doesn't sound like much, but it does mean that the LC9 is 33% heavier than the PF9. The PF9 is a real muzzle lifter. Made me feel better to see that it may have the same effect on you (18:17--switching from PF9 to LC9). :-)

As I wrote to you before, I bought the LC9, and it was a toss up between the Kel-Tec mostly due to price. However, the LC9 is my Primary Carry, and I carry it on the Inside of my belt. With that, I damn sure prefer having some sort of Saftey, even if there isnt a round in the Chamber. I also trust the Pedigree of Ruger as oppsosed to Kel-Tec. The PF9 is a fine gun for Many- I'm sure, but Im also a fan of saftey. Seems like too many idiots out there are getting hurt out there that forget saftey.

I think another point towards the pf9 is the fact that you can get entire grip assemblies with internal parts for 34$ from KT, so you could always try your hand at stippling or modding a spare...food for though. I'm thinking maybe spare frame, heat gun, expanding trig guard...at least its cheap to replace if you screw up, thats what I like about it.

These are both great guns. They're both accurate, and perform very well for their intended purpose. Yeah, the Ruger is about $100 more.., but what people need to understand is that with that $100 difference you're getting a better finish on the slide, and the Ruger's overall design is more "refined" compared to the Kel Tec. You're also going to get a slight bump in build quality with the Ruger. The Ruger's more refined look is a factor for some buyers too.

Thanks for the video! Which helped me make my decision to go with the Ruger. I personally like the loaded chamber indicator. This comes in handy if you lose round your count and/or are in the dark and am unsure if you have a round in the tube. My manual safe is nice and light on my LC9,. I'm old school so I do use the safety from time to time depending on the holster I'm using. I guess I have short thumbs but I can easily reach the mag release on the LC9. I'm not crazy about the magazine disconnect but I can live with it because the gun has a good ergonomic fit for me, its a 9mm, it shoots well, has had 0 firing issues, is not to small nor to big, its dependable with a good warranty. On the other side I have yet to hold one Kel-tec that felt good in my hands. Also I have had one issue in past where a magazine was released at a bad time. Therefore, I will not take a chance on that happening to me again which Hickok 45 noted can be a problem with the PF9. That's my 2 1/2 cents.

honestly planning on the kel-tec due to having glocks(thanks for referring them Hickock45) and safety between the ears. The more parts and moving stuff in a gun the more that can go wrong, seize up from foreign material, mechanical failures(It could possibly happen) or even accidently putting on the safety and needing to get a shot off in 2 sec could possibly cost my life from stress related situation. I like glocks, but want a pocket pistol smaller and lighter than the glock 26.

The magazines for Kel-Tec are made by Mec-Gar. If you take it apart and rotate the spring so that when you re-insert it, the part that was facing the front now faces the back, you will most likely be able to load that 7th round. Every now and then, a magazine spring is inserted backwards and will not allow the follower to fully retract.

I like the detail work on the Ruger frame over the Kel tec. Whether its worth $100 is a matter of opinion. For me its a toss, I am more interested in the function of the weapon. I think Kel Tec is a hit or miss company, either they knock it out of the park or they get eaten by the competition on fit and finish and maybe function. Either of these would be a fine 9mm choice.

On the PF9 Magazine issue. They come with finger stops, so it's tempting to take the original bottom plate off and mess with it. During re-assembly, it can get bound up in such a way as to sit at a slant on the lip, causing the follower to not go down far enough. Take the bottom plate off and the spring out, then re-assemble and chances are you'll be able to fit 7 rounds in there again.

The Ruger is probably the magazine that can't fit the seventh round in it. That's usually just a plastic piece in the magazine (that holds the bottom pannel in place) is turned around. Five minutes of taking the magazine apart can turn it around and get you the seventh round. Had to do this with mine... works perfectly now.

Great review. Thanks for doing it. I own the PF9. I'm left with just one question .... Why does Kel-Tec say to not dry fire the PF9? I e-mailed them about the issue but got no response. Perhaps others can question them until we get an answer.

Good unbiased comparison, thanks. I have a Ruger SR9c and love it but I have not yet conceal carried it. I'm a small guy (I don't even need the pinky extension for the 10 round mag) and it may be a bit too big and heavy but I will probably carry it in the winter and get a pocket gun for the summer months.

Oh and the thumb safety. Being a person that sometimes sleeps with my gun on my hip, that extra safety feature is a major plus.

I know you said Kahr first but a side by side comparison makes it more real. The g26 is a double stack. It's another talk. At least to me. You dis good not coating the others to the G26. Apples to bananas. Awesome channel.

Great review! Today I bought the kel tec pf9 and it was the choice I picked between the ruger lc9. I have small hands and I just liked the way the kel tec felt in my hand with the grip. The ruger lc9 felt like the grip was not for me but the ruger seem to be better made just like you said. God Bless!

I was trying to decide between the two.....with the mag release and finger pinch problems, I'm going to go with the Ruger....I don't mind having the long trigger pull.....thanks Hickok!

Having a great company like Ruger behind your purchase is worth the decision all by itself to choose the Ruger. Their customer service is second to none. I own the LC9 for 9mm carry convenience, and like my SR40C so much, I am going to add the SR9C to my collection of 9mm handguns.

I don't know if Ruger's customer service is any good as I've not had to contact them. Kel Tec's customer service expects you to call with problems; I won't buy another.

Ruger is amazing, they pay shipping both ways fix it free and you get your gun back in about two weeks. They don't want a bad product with their name on it out there.

500 rounds with out cleaning with my pf9. when i finally clean it it wasn't because it had any failures, it was because it was getting my shirts dirty when i carried it.

(Cont) 2-2 The students were losing vital time due to the concern with their overly normal long index finger nail. “Ladies cut the finger nail, the nail isn’t worth losing your safety”. They seem to not have the problem as much w/the PC9. HicKok45, Thanks for pointing out the the enlarger of the two trigger guard rings. Very good vid, Thumbs up.

I have several Kel-tec pistols p32, p3at, pf9, and p40. I have never had to send any back for warranty work. I like them is why I bought them not because they are cheap. My glock mod 23 is great, my baretta 92 is great. my Taurus 709 slim is great. The thing is I carry the Kel-tec p3at, and pf9 because they fit in my pocket and are lite..

I have owned Kel-Tecs since they started selling them. Although they are pretty much set up the same the P32, p3at and the pf9 the 380 and the 9 have mag. Release issues. Kel-Tec will send you out a new release and spring. I love the p32 but sold the p3at because of that. I can't trust that. I also have dry fired them many many times and never had a problem with anything breaking.

Another good video by Hickok45 on the LC9 & PF 9, I live in massachusetts so our only option will be the Ruger when it is approved for sale which a local gun dealer told me will happen. Now about the safeties we don't have much control over that in MA if we want a new gun, but if you read the article in American Handgunner March/April 2011 by Massad Ayoob titled " Safety catch lessons from real-world shootings" you will see a case where safeties have saved police officers lives, good article to

Hickok, I make holsters and I have both the LC9 and the PF9. The LC9 will fit the PF9 but not vice versa because the nose on the PF9 is more square. There is a difference on the IWB holster as well because the LC9 has a larger trigger guard. So you have to have different holsters if you are particular about the fit. Also, my hand is smaller, thus, both guns feel great. Finally, When I received my PF9 the extractor wasn't working well. Keltec replaced it quickly and gave me a free mag!
