My electric bike runs on LiFePO4 battery cells, specifically for the longevity and safety aspects. I definitely agree on their importance its a shame they are so undersold and forgotten by so many technology venues.

A few days ago, I've replaced the LiFePO4 battery of my 11-year-old Velec S3 eBike. In the end, I could barely do 1km on the battery that's still impressive considering the age. For the replacement, I had to settle for a Li-ion as that's all that is available.

I have a Golabs R300 which is LiFePo4. In comparison to the Jackery 300 which is identical in capacity, but the Golabs is about 2 or 3 pounds more in weight. However with micro portable power stations 2 pounds isn't really going to make much difference in lugging it around and the Cells are rated at 2000 cycles before 80% compared to the Jackery's 500 cycles. For 2 or 3 pounds of extra weight I'll take the LFP cells.
@LDSreliance

Amen. LFP is superior, overall, except for those applications where size and weight are by far the most critical factors. For all of the rest, I'll take the better safety, cycle life, cost, and durability.

I looked this up because I got into solar very recently with the advent of LFP batteries into all in one "solar generator" power stations. I started small with just 2 panels and based on favorable panel performance in shade and overcast conditions, expanded all the way to 2.4 KW of solar and about 12 KW spread across four 2000W power stations and 5 standalone LFP batteries. I''m glad I waited for LFPs before taking the plunge. I'm still astonished the news keeps talking about cobalt and nickel, the price, issues around the origin countries, etc stalling the EV and solar movement. It's surprising to me that my batteries, that I just ordered off the internet on a whim have none of those supply or sourcing issues. I'm not even a hardline environmentalist. I'm just a bloke who likes batteries and I've been very impressed so far

You may be right with all your points but concerning consumer electronics and many other areas: you did not mention the major vantage LiIon has over LFP: Market share and force of habit. LiIon is the only technology used in consumer electronics nowadays. Manufacturers and all circuits are attuned for LiIon and it's slightly higher voltage. They will continue to use that technology only until something comes along that has *overwhelming* advantages, like LiIon had compared to NiMH. Imo LFPs advantages are too small and few to make a considerable dent in the market share of LiIon - in most areas. It is true that for grid storage / large applications LFP will overtake LiIon.
@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance Жыл бұрын
I agree with that. But I would add that it won't take too many more scandals like the Samsung cell phone situation with the exploding batteries for the consumer base to force change. Already that is one of the most often commented/questioned topics in my videos around lithium batteries is that they all explode. Not many people know that LFP batteries don't do that. Where size and weight matters a lot, like cell phones, I don't think LFP will ever be the answer. But they may be forced to adopt other chemistries or rush the advancement of new chemistries as they continue to push the envelope of performance and heat. But where size and weight don't matter as much, LFP is going to completely dominate.
@SebasTian-od7oz
@SebasTian-od7oz Жыл бұрын
@@LDSreliance Thank you for that detailed answer! And indeed... your first point plays right at one of my biggest worries nowadays: At work I often think "what if one of the LiIon (and LiPo cells from my RC planes) in my apartment decides to go critical while I'm not around and burns down all I have..." I could cross out a big worry if that tiny possibility of doom wouldn't hang over my head each day.

will LFP replace other Li batteries? yes at certain level. LFP is much cheaper than other model but there's fact that LFP energy density are lower and degrade faster than other too. so yeah, for short range EV or places where you can easily charge your devices fast LFP would be best, but long range EV still gonna used Nickel batteries whether it is NMC or any newer chemical like NCA
@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 8 ай бұрын
You are mostly correct except the degradation part. LFP lasts 3-5x longer than NMC, LiPo and LCO (what we commonly call Lithium Ion). Top shelf Grade A cells will easily go 4000+ cycles.
@breakhart
@breakhart 8 ай бұрын
@@LDSreliance thanks for reminding me that. so basically low range with high charge cycle vs high range with low charge cycle, if the charging tech can deliver faster charge and the place have many of it LFP might be able to par today's nikel batteries

its far better that lead acid, if u find self having 20kwh in lead acid, you can only use 50% so you technically have a 10kwh system, however having the lifepo4 in 20kwh u can use 90% which is an advantage, and you also have a longer life cycle using lifepo4

That is depth of discharge. You can discharge it whatever percentage you want as long as you understand that, as with all batteries, there is a corresponding relationship in life cycles that varies with depth of discharge. So you may get 5,000 cycles at 50% DoD and 2,000 cycles at 100% DoD.

@LDSreliance
@LDSreliance 3 жыл бұрын
Lead Carbon is definitely a cool technology. It gives the traditional, valve-regulated lead acid batteries longer life and faster charging. I don't see it catching on to the mass market, though, as it is still heavy and inferior to lithium in most ways. But if they can mass produce them and they are half or a third the cost of a lithium battery, then they will still sell a ton of them!

LFP is a specific chemistry under the broader lithium ion or Li-ion umbrella. But the term that we commonly use for Li-ion almost always refers to LCO, which is what we use in the majority of small electronics like phones, laptops, cameras, tablets, etc. Kinda like how we say Kleenex but we could be referring to any number of brands or types of tissues. So you are correct but 99% of people have no idea there are different types of lithium ion batteries.

@LDSreliance

Relatively speaking, yes. Although, in general terms they are extremely reliable and are used in a billions phones around the world with an infinitesimal failure rate. But they do make headlines when they fail. LFP would effectively put that "lithium is dangerous and can explode" narrative to rest if it were put into use in all portable electronics. But that would add a few grams and millimeters to your smart phone, heaven forbid.
