Le Train des Pignes 2014

A video filmed on 7th.September 2014 on the metre gauge Chemin de Fer de Provence line featuring 1923 built Mallet no.E211. The train operates during the summer months between Puget - Theniers and Annot and the video sees the train at various locations on both the outward and return journeys. Thanks to the G.E.C.P. association who operate the steam trains over the line.

I think I remember this loco from the CP meter gauge system in Regua from donkeys years ago so its great to see it still earing its keep and looking very good. I remember staying in the hotel overlooking the shed and waking every hour to the smell of smoke, rattling of points and tooting of whistles. Well filmed, excellently produced and presented.

What a smashing set up they have Austin. Scenery, well kept locos and lineside areas, plenty of banks, sun and exhaust. No wonder you go back every so often. Thanks for sharing your shots of these delightful lines. I'm quite envious. Chris

Thanks Chris, it is a working line running from Nice up to Digne les Bains in the mountains. Steam is only seen on a relatively short section of the route in summertime.

Thanks Steve, I normally get a shot of the train going the other way on that viaduct but tried a different approach this year. As happens so often the sun was shining on the side of the viaduct just before the train appeared!

This is a wonderful video of a delightful railway line with impressive scenery and bridges too. The little Mallet packs quite a punch, is in great condition, and has a good turn of speed. The crew seemed very obliging with the whistle so well done to them and the volunteers who keep her running! Well captured and presented once again! Thanks Austin, from Ken

Many thanks Ken, the line is very impressive, running from Nice up into the mountains at Digne les Bains and is even more scenic in parts than the section which is used for the weekend steam specials. The Mallet is a powerful loco, ex Portuguese Railways, and this light load doesn't trouble her at all.

I think the arrangement probably helps with negotiating sharp curves and gradients. Thanks for watching

That wonderful light once drew the Impressionists to the area of course, and it's not bad for the amateur photographer! Siffler does indeed mean 'to whistle'

I was surprised at the amount of clag, more than I'd seen all summer in Britain! On most of the continent the railways are not fenced off, people are entrusted with more common sense, which seems to be on the wane in Britain

Thanks Noel, my wife and I are quite boring as we've been drawn back to this area for the last 18 years, but then everything we want from a holiday is there. Don't know where the coal came from but I wish West Coast would buy a few tons!
