i think she mentioned that in one of her interviews that you gotta have empathy for any character you play even the bad/villain character.

I think for Lea Salonga, the craft is just a means to an end: Namely, to use music to communicate in a way spoken dialogue does not. That's the experience only musical theater can provide. Like you, I am often speechless by the end of one of her songs. I feel transported.

Mondays aren't so bad. . . when we have Salonga Sundays. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Lea's gift! I've been lucky enough to see Lea on stage and in concert several times, and it is really breathtaking. Hoping that in the near future, you'll have a chance to see her "live!"

Another terrific commentary. You two provide such a wonderful mix of technical and artistic analyses! Lea is remarkable and I never get tired of watching/listening to her or hearing other people's appreciation of her. Yes, Lea knows her voice. She has been working professionally for over 40 years now, but she still *works* at performing. She makes it look easy when we all know it isn't. I would imagine there is a list of Lea videos that you have to react to now. (I'm pretty sure I made a list on one of your earlier reaction videos.) Someone else commented requesting that you watch the duet between Lea and Regine Velasquez. I'll chime in and request that, too. It's a Broadway medley and it really is fantastic!

I found an article that Lea wrote back in January. (Lea had been writing a weekly column for a Filipino paper from 2008 or 2009 until the pandemic began. The past year or so she has been writing less frequently.) In this first piece she wrote in 2021 she discusses getting used to performing without an audience: "That said though, I’ve been able to focus on the singing. Just the singing. The technique of it … the breathing … the body support … figuring out musical challenges in songs I’ve never sung before … finding my way through a new piece via a road map provided by a friendly music director (thank heavens for sheet music) … and giving my best guesses on context and interpretation. When the audience is taken away and all I’m left with is the music, I’m reminded that this is what I fell in love with, and I gain new appreciation for singing and for all the mechanisms that make it happen: the diaphragm, the fascia, those larger muscles in my back, ribs and abdominals, my lungs (which in this day and age I promise to never take for granted), my heart which houses the emotions, and my mind which keeps the stories." Lea continues to be an inspiration!

guys, FYI, lea is a product of philippine concert/ stage plays repertoire since her kiddy years., brainy lady, supposed to take pre- med course in university but miss saigon changed her career course back in 1988. i would best describe her as some1 with a cultured voice, lean diaphragm thus well controlled breathing while singing & a voice you'll never get tired of listening to

You described natural actors to a T. The ability to just instinctively be able to empathize, without having to do a whole ton of analysis on your character first [though that still probably helps]. That’s how I approach to acting, I have that natural sensitivity.

I was waiting for Christian’s “eeehrrr flow!!!” advice hahaha ... and he said it here only once.. IDK why I hear you (Christian) in my mind’s ear say that while I do the dishes ( maybe the air flow sound from the dish washer haha). But back to your review, I think Lea executes the actress’ job of delivering the monologue through song very well. It’s all about her delivering the lines in a way that reveals the complex thoughts and feelings (arc?) of the character to move the story along ( even in a concert). I’m glad you both talk about the writing / writers too. But back to Lea, I think it’s the how clearly she can communicate those thoughts and feelings through singing (successful use of technique and living the character) well written songs. Glad one of you (it seems) identifies more as an actor and the other as singer ... I hope you both continue to audition for parts, OR write each other into characters in your own production(s) in whatever medium. For the “current” I think Eva Noblezada ( Miss Saigon, Les Mis, Hadestown, Yellow Rose) might be a good study / example to review. Her performance in the Tony’s (she’s been nominated twice) is 👍... Keep smiling, acting and that eeerrr flowing.

Hey!! Thanks Stephanie!!! 😍 It’s all about the AIR FLOWWWW Yes we both have musical theatre trained backgrounds but from different schools in London. And we’re also really good friends. So I think it makes for an interesting reaction xx Keep doing those dishes haha!
@stephanie91ification3 жыл бұрын
I think you both could cross over to TV, Hollywood, heck maybe streaming as a breakthrough medium too.. perhaps you have to do high school student roles in an American accent in the beginning haha 😍 or write yourself the characters you want to play 😍 I’m not an insider.. I just do dishes haha 😍
