Learn how to stop a mule or horse from escaping. if you have ever came back to where your critter was tied up and it was gone, you know how that feels. I use a lead rope to stop the escape. A long lead rope, a proper knot in the proper location will stop that. Tie a bowline around their neck and end of problem escapes.

Thanks for putting this together. Just had a few “escaped convicts” in the middle of the night. I think I’ll try it out.

This is good advise especially for people that don't go to hill that often. I see a lot of people try to copy outfittters practices of turning horses out to feed and then after a full belly the "want to be home" kicks in and bye bye.

Ha! You should have seen the look on my hunter's face when he found out his horse was gone 5 miles from camp as it was getting dark! Dang critter was almost back to camp by the time I caught it again. The hunter thought I'd left him for the wolves! That's the same way I do mine, but I use a nose band with the neck rope. It looks better and less bulky too.

So basically ya took a page out of the traditional buckeroo playbook. They use a under bridal and then tie a bowline around there neck.

If that’s a real book I’ve never heard of it. Everything I’m doing was learned in the Idaho back country over 40 years of mountains and trails. 😉

Couldn't you do the same thing without the halter?

Not really, the halter and rope keep the head straight and the chin forward

First of all you don't tie a horse that does not know how to tie. Next you are within eyesight of that horse that is tied so you can help him if needed. Don't tie to a tree. They will end up tied too short in a very uncomfortable position. Tie to a high line. Do it properly.

That works great if your standing around camp all day, or around the barn. But when you’re hunting and/or hiking you’re not by your stalk. You tie where you can, no hunters that i know carry a high-line in their saddle bags. High-lines in camp yes but on the trail while riding and sporadic stops no. Ties and hobbles are perfect for these situations. And your right green stock needs more attention.

@@idahomountainbuilt So, let me see if I understand.........It is all about you, and not what is in the best interests of the horse.............Ok, I got it.

@@gerrycoleman7290you have obviously never hunted on horseback. The horse gets you in the area, then your feet get you close to the animals. Anyone who says they watch their horse the whole time he is tied is going for a trail ride, not hunting.

@gerrycoleman7290. It seems all you do is bitch and complain about others. I have seen you bash other trainers on other videos but have never posted anything valuable on how to train horses or mules yourself. Pull yourself away from hugging that tree I think you got a log in your eye
