Hi mush , really interesting video , as a chippie of many years always respect other tradesmen . I’ll stick to cutting my roofs and you to making them waterproof . Thanks again , kind regards paul

Hi Paul I could say the same when I see you chippys cut and pitch a roof. I wouldn’t know where to start. Also the lead only ever looks as good as the timber work underneath.

Great video thanks. My background is in pipe organ building and repair. Many organ pipes are made from lead, tin or an alloy of the two. Here is a video of a pipe maker soldering. The same way it was done hundreds of years ago. The "sizing they use is talc or chalk mixed with rabbit hide glue and water mixed into a paint. They scrape the two edges which meet together, leaving a small v-grove of clean metal for the solder to fill in.

Thank you and thanks for watching. I didn’t know this about the organ pipes. Very interesting thanks for sharing.

Hi thanks for watching the vid. Yes it will permanently hold. But it might be difficult depending on how old the lead is and the condition. You need to make sure you can shave it back until it’s clean. If you can then it will take well

...Isn't oxyacetylene overkill for lead? Lead melts easily under a propane torch. Even a little butane soldering pen would work fine. And far be it from me to tell you how to treat your own nervous system, but shouldn't you use a respirator with your nose inches away from molten lead? It would be pretty tragic to see you in a couple years with Hatter's Shakes.

Yes I generally wear a mask. Just got the purpose of the vid I didn’t so people could hear me. Also every lead worker I know uses oxyacetylene.

@ETH852 жыл бұрын
@@slbleadworks ive only done it a couple of times because people don't like paying for the time and skill to make flashings like you do.. I'd really like to get into it more to be fair and because I've done tig and find that easy the methods the same just different type of torch.. I've used the oxy torch like you have there and also done a method with a rod that has steel on the end and heat it up hot and run it down the seam but that's more like fusion as your not adding material to the joint.. only just started getting your channel popping up.. you do some tidy tricky jobs that I've seen mullered.. good to see people with some pride and skill doing this as most people can't get their heads round it and usually butcher it..

Hi Neil. Code 4 is absolutely fine. I weld this on a daily basis as the norm. I’ve never tried code 3. But to be honest. Code 3 should only be used for soakers anyway. You could probably weld it if you needed. But you would need such a low flame. So in answer to your question I’d say code 4.
