I did this method very successfully a couple of years ago, wrote it down, can’t find my notes but am so glad it was in my liked video list for me to follow again.

I can’t thank you enough for this video. Binding has always been a thrown in my side because I feel like the edges of my quilt are always so bulky. It never even crossed my mind to stitch it down! I’m actually binding a baby quilt this week and can’t wait to try this technique!

That's awesome! I'm so glad you found this helpful and will be trying this technique soon!

The Victory Lap(s) makes so much sense to sew (reinforcing joined seams on the edges of the quilt top and making it easier to apply the binding). I also like the word, Victory (an achievement of mastery or success in a struggle or endeavor against odds or difficulties"), because it one of those positive experiences where the quilter can celebrate her/his creation having finished the bulk of assembling a quilt. The hardest part has already been attained and one is about to run through the ribbon of the finish line (binding), achieving something not just anybody can accomplish.

Exactly! It's not an extra step of drudgery or a pain - it's a victory! We've won the day!

You did it again! Taught this "vintage" quilter a new trick. This came just in time as I'm binding the "Golf " quilt for my grandson. I'll use the victory lap which I never did before. Thank you, Leah.

I tried this on a baby quilt I just finished. It puckered as I reached the first corner. I quit when I got to the second corner with another (much larger) pucker forming. I quilted this quilt with no problems and zero puckers. I was using my walking foot. Any suggestions?

I wonder if the foot was somehow pulling on the corner? How densely was the quilt quilted? Did you play with the stitch length or the pressure on the foot at all?
@angelaschultz37666 жыл бұрын
The quilting was not dense and I did have a smaller stitch length. I'm guessing one or both of those might be the culprit. I'll try again on the next quilt ;) Thanks for your help!

My Victory Laps always pucker the fabric! Is there any way to avoid it? I don't usually quilt my border, which is usually about 2-3 inches. You address nearly every issue I've ever had with quilting, but this one issue is driving me nuts! My batting is usually thin, needle punched, and can be quilted up to several inches so I don't think that's the issue, but...?? Please Help! BTW - follow you a lot and love you like a sister. So sorry for your recent loss (fall 2019). Hugs, M

Oh - and I did use my walking foot and lessened the pressure of my foot. Still got puckering. Stitch length set to 2.5.

Most likely the puckering is because you're not quilting much in your border. I would also guess that it's due to the fabric not being very stiff and stable on the edges. Do you starch your fabric for the quilt top before cutting? Do you starch your backing fabric before basting? How secure is your basting? All of this will play a role in how the edges of the quilt behave. I would advise adding a bit more quilting to the border. Even just 2 curving lines through the middle of the space will add more stability to that edge.

Would you use a train needle to just do one pass?

I think 2 victory laps are really good to do. I sometimes stitch around 3 times. Just go with what feels right to you.
