On Northstars, when you're in this deep, you had better split the block and do the case half seals, that's where they are known to leak. We normally did this with the engine still in the chassis hanging from a bridge. We just pulled the cradle off and left the powertrain in the car. If we had the engine out we'd do the head gaskets as well. The problem with the head gaskets is the head bolts are engineered wrong and they'd pull the threads out. There was a good while where the ribbon gasket for the oil pan was on backorder, so to get the gar done we'd fill that up with gm engine sealant and put it together. It'd at least make it out of warranty before it leaked again. I bet thats what happened here

@@scott.koopmann I’m certain the costomer was quizzed as to how far they wanted to pursue leaks and how much they were prepared to spend. Unfortunately they’re a shit motor and they can be sorted but people have their limits on what they’re willing to spend it’s only oil leaks so not going to cause a catastrophic engine failure so relax 😎

I saw nothing wrong with this repair. The RTV is extra insurance to prevent future leaks. Finding ways to save customers money is always worth it in the long run. A few hundred dollars in extra bolts and labor when not necessary is like stealing from someone. You can take advantage of someone now for short term gain, or you can help someone save and retain a long term customer. I choose the latter. Some people are just gonna be haters and a..holes regardless of what you do. You,ve got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything, so Ray, just keep doing what you do. No one is gonna agree with you 100% of the time because everyone see's things with different views, but at least you explain why you do the things you do and that is 100% respectable.

Truly a mechanical marvel of design. You have to admire the level of engineering and the technical challenges in producing the many precision castings for such an engine. Thermal stress between zones, components and materials wasn’t fully realized. Too, the quality of gasket materials appears to be inadequate for that period. Still, a very interesting autopsy of a design destined to fail spectacularly.

Never, never, ever use any kind of abrasive disc or wheel on any aluminum mating surface. You've managed to fling a lot of small particles inside of the engine, not to mention damaging the mating surfaces. A tungsten blade scraper (Super Scraper brand) does an excellent job without damaging the aluminum. Yes, it takes more time, but it's the proper way to do it. A wooden or plastic dowel will take care of getting the old RTV out of the groove. Again, a little more time, but no damage........

Couldn't agree more. I made the mistake one time working at a GM dealership replacing head gaskets on a county sheriff's police cruiser. I used an abrasive pad to clean the deck and head surfaces. I took the normal precautions to plug holes and thoroughly clean everything (including oil changes), but some of the abrasive materials made their way through the oil pump. The car was back in the shop in less than a month after they were on a high-speed pursuit and the engine locked up - scoured/seized oil pump. Needless to say it was an expensive learning experience. We ended up replacing the entire engine.

Man. The vitriol of a lot of perfectionists who have all the time in the world and all the money to burn it with in here is pretty awesome. You guys don't know what Ray talked about with his customer. I would suspect that he has had several conversations regarding 'do you want to pay for me to do the mid block seal or no?' and customer said 'no' as it's not leaking. 'I can fix the oil pan or get a new one, which will you pay for?' Go with the old one. Remember, Ray is on the hook for *every single thing he does* and then he puts it on the KZbins to boot. You don't think he's pretty aware of all the things? Y'all're funny. Truly. Might need to run a shop and be a mechanic on the line (which Ray does and was for other shops, including a Chevy dealer back when, so he knows more than you, likely) and deal with all the ways customers, parts, and techniques don't mesh and you have to deal with it and MAKE IT WORK. Which Ray seems to be doing just fine, you ask me. Go Ray. Can't wait to see this thing done. The Car Wizard would be appalled you're even doing it at all, I'd bet. :D /I am a tad concerned with the whiz wheel sprinklings in the case, but I'm sure you're gonna give it an oil bath before first start, eh? *nods affirmatively knowing that's the case*

In the UK you can buy silicone removal gunge or silicone eater. It comes in a tube much like silicone and you spread it over what you want to remove then leave it alone for an hour. It somehow eats into the silicone and returns it to a fresh like silicone state so it can be scraped or wiped away. May take a few attempts in that deep gasket groove however.

8:02 HEADPHONE USERS: RIP EARDRUMS. This engine is still remarkably similar to my 1997 Cadillac. I know they made some changes to the head bolts but I'm not sure what else. I put in head studs at about 95k miles because the head gaskets started to leak and just resealed it and replaced the bearings. Never had a problem since then and now it's 230k-ish miles.

I wonder if that’s the Northstar Engine that had the head bolt stretching problem. If it is, it might be smart to put head studs in it.

i just had to reply to this one. i did not care for the nowsucks,.. i mean northstar motor. the best way i found to clean those oil pans and the girdle it from if you remove it is with old carb cleaner, the good stuff that came in a 5 gallon can. drop it in & let it soak for a little while. pull it out & let it drip dry for a few minutes then hose off or clean it in the parts washer. any silicone left on will pretty much wipe right off. good spray carb cleaner does work, just need to keep the silicone wet for a little while. Safety-Kleen also use to have some really good carb cleaner. its kind of a gamble not doing the girdle, we had a fair number of customers that only wanted to do the pan. going back together we did the pan like you did this one except when we put it on, we would lightly snug the bolts, then let it sit. depending on the weather, sometimes for about 5 minutes up to about 20 minutes or so to let the silicone skin over good & then torque the bolts.

Did you grab another bolt for that one that was missing or did that go in the oil pan on the right side in the video or is that for a bracket or something later

Ray, the part you keep referring to as the “ block skirt”. is actually the upper oil pan. That is 99% where the oil always leaks from. Like you stated in another video. Most shops don’t even like to work on those Northstar motors. They are a nightmare. It never fails every time you do any kind of work on them. They always come back for warranty work. They were a very poor design. They have a litany of problems. The earlier ones I believe up to 2004 had a tendency to blow head gaskets early. They have an update kit to strengthen and put larger head bolts in. However, this particular engine should have the update from the factory. But they still had major oil leak problems. Like I said most shops don’t even like to deal with them because they will be back for warranty. Just when do you think you’ve got the leaks taken care of. They start to leak again. I know of a lot of shops that do work on them. But they have the customer sign a release. Essentially stating there is no guarantee of future leaks. Just FYI, my friend, Ron.

that style of lower oil pan definitely had a nitrile rubber gasket - someone in past tried to shortcut and RTV sealant was not going to work. More un-doing someone's bad work for engines that depend on RTV - both surfaces would be flat (not grooved) in order to provide maximum surface for sealant to work
