This is excellent, excellent demonstration Bob! you're right though in that these valves are not in the most accessible areas, i.e. under the sink, next to a toilet, lol. The hardest thing for me, I'm about as "un-handy" as one can get, is identifying the kind of valve I'm looking at. Thanks again for sharing your expertise Bob! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This guy just saved my downstairs from flooding and thousands of dollars in reupholstery of my downstairs as well as stopped me from having a meltdown. Just had my valve literally start pissing a steady stream from the stem and I freaked! I thought my lower level was done for. Then I saw this vid, phoned up Lowe's, got the packing (and a ball valve just in case I had to replace it entirely) and now the valve isbt leaking anymore! The packing completely disintegrated as soon as I opened it. It's fixed now and I don't have to worry about my house drowning! Many thanks for your knowledge and time uploading this. Very invaluable!

I haven't even watched the video cause I dont need to, as it's a small simple fix that I can do myself. But just a little note, this is an amazing youtube channel for these things. The only time I would watch a video is when youd get stuck on something or more complex form of plumbing. Note: I have 0 experience as a plumber. This is my first time doing this. ECERYONE! Do it yourself. You dont even need youtube just common sense I fixed and replaced bath tub part. Changed many things in copper piping leaks. Actually this weekend i fixed my friends moms place, replaced her main valve cause it was leaking and some old connectors were leaking. Then replaced the faucet took out the new one and replaced it for a new one. Plus the 3 leaks I found. All on my own. It's very easy. My friends mom would have spent atleast after tax 3500+ or more for all I fixed after the calculations. Videos are great they're AMAZING for more complex things. But what you need to do first is: Check where leak is coming from. Then fix it, tighten the screws, tighten the connectors. Replace or apply more tape to female connection threads etc etc.... It's very easy. (Atleast for me it was) Just find problem and use you common sense and repair it. Plumbers are only needed for BIG jobs. Never simple leaks. Unless you're disabled. Then that's pathetic (sorry lol) You shouldn't be spending grands for something so simple. Everyone should be doing this simple stuff at home. Watch the videos if you like when you get stuck. They're helpful. But I usually get right down to business and fix it myself. And I believe you can to! Enjoy and thank you for making these videos for those who need it. Or for women who have zero mechanical sense. Which is completely normal. Theres a small percentage of them that know haha. Good luck!

i can't thank you enough for this video! i had a slow drip under the nut on the main water line valve that was getting worse..it was dripping for quite a long time and i decided now was the time to try and fix it myself..i thought this would be a nightmare of a job to fix but it wasn't thanks to your video!!..i gripped the nut with a set of vice grips and the nut slowly began to turn..i removed the screw from the handle and lightly tapped it off from underneath..just as you said, i did NOT need to turn the main water supply off..i made one wrap with the Teflon rope and put the nut back on and the leak stopped! i will keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't start leaking again,if so i'll give it another wrap..TY for posting this video!!

Update- thanks Bob, you're instructions worked a treat. The cold water gate valve from the attic tank was leaking so I used a bung to block the hole from the tank and then turned the valve off. I used PTFE tape (what you call Teflon tape in the US) and wrapped about 4 " around the stem and tightened back up the valve. I didn't need to turn off the water at the mains and now no more leak,. Saved at least €70 by not getting a plumber. Thanks a mill bob!!

Thanks for not only an excellent Video on various types of Valves, but for a Better way to address Valve packing repair. Unfortunately I could not use the easiest way, but the knowledge provided helped me get the task done. *My home is about 60yrs. old and every time I attempt any repair I find one more shortcut or pitiful quality job done from the original home build. All of the plumbing is in the semi-finished Basement, along side all the electric(which has gone underwater Twice since I purchased the home in 1987. Screw in valve for Water heater supply line. Brass Screw holding knob. Heavy corrosion, not only on the valve/knob but throughout all the plumbing. Also Excessive Calcium issues.(another nightmare) Anyway, I shut the water down at (my installed) water filtration system, bled off pressure at the kitchen sink, opened the water heater drain for a minute(after switching off the electric). Then, having already cleaned the extended stem as best possible, I backed off the packing nut, added about 2.5 turns of 3/32 Graphite packing line and followed your tightening process. *Knob turns with slight resistance. operation is smooth and valve is Bone Dry!!!* Thank you! Next up - Anode and Full flow Drain Valve - lol

As a 55 year retired plumber If I were teaching people how to repack a valve I would tell them to put a little plumbers grease on the threads and the stem when reassembling the valve. Also a gate valve is to use in the full open or closed position. If it's going to be open most of the time ,when installing them they should be installed with the handle on a 45 degree angle down ,or strait down that way dirt will not accumulate in the bottom where the gate seats when you close . Also if need be it can be taken apart and used as a draining point to get rid of water in the line . A globe valve is a compression valve used to throttle the flow of the liquid in the line.👷🏻

Thank you for the video. I have a hot water valve for my washing machine that is probably 40 years old. It is attached to 1/2 copper pipe, no worries there, but I just replaced the washing machine and noticed the valve is leaking from the stem. My concern is, being so old, would I risk snapping the valve off if it is too tight? I am just a DIY guy, but never tackled plumbing like this. Seems simple, but...
@BobsPlumbingVideos2 жыл бұрын
on a 40 year old valve it's probably going to need some packing and a little silicone waterproof grease. I wouldn't try to tighten it, make sure the valve is shut. Loosen the packing nut, scrape out the old packing, re-pack with graphite or teflon add some waterproof lube and tighten (nice and easy)
@jazzman94692 жыл бұрын

Great video!! Love all the details, using actual parts and going step by step, even the mundane but necessary ones that can be critical and explanations in all your videos, exactly my kind of information! Question - When turning main off/on and opening up the highest and lowest fixture, would that include outside hose spigot that's 10 feet away in the yard, but lower than the house and 25 feet plus below the main shut off? I'm in a "guest house" circa 1970's mobile home that shares a water tank for hauled in water because the wells went dry decades ago. The main shut off is at the water tank at least 20 feet above the level of the mobile home and 165 feet away. As far as I know there's no separate shut off for the spigot in the yard and whenever the water tank has gone empty, that spigot usually blurbs and burps from air. Which is weird to me, as it is the lowest faucet down here off that main above the house. Shouldn't it burp at the main where the tank is? I need to repair toilet shutoff that leaks while being turned from off to on. It's super old plastic handle and I just want to replace the whole valve because of the age (original shut off and old metal corrugated tube) and reduce risk of emptying that 7,000 gals of water while I'm at work.
@BobsPlumbingVideos2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking with an incoming water main that's located in a basement, I'll drain down to just below where I'm going to be working. So if I'm on a 3rd floor, I need to drain down to the floor below. Not entire house, on the other hand if I'm working in the basement, I will open a faucet on the highest level and all the faucets on the first floor as well as the basement level including the outside faucets. Sounds like you have a vacuum going on which would explain the burping. Any way to relieve the air from the tank?

One extra thing Bob on gate valves. I have found ones in the horizontal position will have junk down in the area where the tapered gate rests when you try and close them. They will often not seal a 100% and drip drip drip they do and you know what that means when you are trying to solder down stream of them. For sure FP Ball valves are they way to go.

Hi. Thanks for the very instructional video. I hope you can guide me to see what I did wrong. I have a gate valve as a main water valve, I went to check it because it was not stopping the water flow all the way. I first removed the nut on the right side (from the POV of your video) while on the fully open position and then I removed the whole body.. I light sanded the inside and also the "gate" I put everything back in the opposite sequence as I took it apart. Now the handle just never stop spinning. The problem is a live on a townhouse and the only way to cut the water is to cut the water to the whole community. I attempted that repair while they were working on so plumbing issues. Sorry for the long post.

If this is an older valve I would most certainly do yourself a favor and change the valve. Gate valves a notorious for not holding water 100 %.. Sounds to me like the is stuck inside the valve body

Excellent video. I have been anxious about repacking the stem nut on my gate valve. Virtually every other vid says "turn off the water main" to do it, and as a mechanical engineer who looked at a cross section drawing of a gate valve, it didn't seem necessary to me. Put valve in CLOSED position, then back off the packing nut, repack, reassemble, and be done. At most I would expect little or no water to come out the stem even with the street pressure of 65psi (that's my street pressure).

Your video is extremely thorough: If one thing doesn’t work, you’ve offered more steps. I went through the first step - gradually and slightly tightening the packing nut. No joy. Still leaking. Now I’m on Step 2, packing the nut. I’m fearing I’m going to end up having to change out the entire valves. Everything was frozen from Florida water corrosion. I had to get the corrosion off with a corrosive, take a brass brush to clean them off, then apply mass quantities of lubricant to get everything moving (handles and nuts). I finally got the screw out of the handle on the cold side in an extremely tight space. The hot handle screw won’t cooperate. I wraped everything critical in a water-soaked cotton rag then applied heat. I’m hoping I’ll get that screw to break. Then I’ll pack them both, and see where we are.

Great Video, Question..If a 1" gate is stuck inside the housing in the closed position, and the valve stem broke off, is their anyway to get the gate out of the seat, like WD40, loosen with screwdriver or small bar, its off the house main line for a faucet shut off...I've loosened everything but need the nerve to shut off the water and remove the stem to make the repair...Thanks
@BobsPlumbingVideos2 жыл бұрын
if the stem broke off and the gate is in the closed position, shut the water supply off back off the valve bonnett and remove the broken gate with a pair of needle nose pliers. Re-install the bonnett or just replace the shut off valve.

No need for that valve to be on the second floor and rusting and leaking 😮but it is buried with concrete and behind a ceramic tile. Nasty 🤢 hard to get that valve and to cracked the concrete around that valve...😢

Sounds like a P.I.A. job but sometimes you just have to push through it. Chip away the concrete and remove the valve and come up with a straight section of pipe!

Hi Bob Excellent video. I work in the plumbing department of one of the big box stores and often get questioned about repairing valves. I’ll be telling them all to check out your videos from now on.

Very informational. Given how critical a shut off valve is, forget repacking, just install a new valve and you are set for the next 20+ years.

Great video, thank you! Can I safely assume the same concept with packing on key valve that is on a gas line headed to the fireplace? Because they key valve is in the bricks, I cannot access past the packing nut…

I would not fool around with a gas valve!! Spray it with a solution of dish soap and water, if you see bubbles, I would call in a professional and have the valve replaced!!!

Used plumbers tape but need to use a better packing and/or a better 1/4 turn valve. I'll need to remove bricks to even get to enough pipe to change the valve but the street leaks too much to stem the flow enough to sweat copper. As a kid I had to do all of the plumbing, under the house, snaking out the drains, electrical, gardening (my father grew up on a farm/ranch...) so had to take the oven,washing machine apart ... Thanks good info

I know what you mean about gate valves. I am in UK. I find it all too common for them to let by and had the odd stem break when turning them back on. If replacing them I always opt for a full bore lever ball valve. Way more reliable. When it comes to the main shut off valve, our water regulations will insist on a stoptap. The valve must have a screw down washer. So effectively what you call a globe valve, though usually has a crutch head type handle

very clear and to the point, like subscribe., when you open all the water down and upstairs do you open both hot and cold or just the cold side to let the air out

Both!

Great video Bob. Very enlightening. Question for you. I'm in the process of changing out my kitchen so I shut off the main ( Cold water direct fed of off it) and shut off two gate valves on cold water storage tank in loft ( one cold for feed to bathrooms and other to feed hot water storage tank. On finishing job I opened up the valves again. Cold opened no bother. I didn't think the hot was a problem ( wasnt stiff when closing it ) but it just kept turning and turning. Confirmed it hadnt opened at all by turning on one of hot taps - nothing came out. So, I guess tbe gate part has separated from the spindle inside the valve somehow but I dont understand how. Any suggestions before I pull the whole thing apart?

It's possible the stem snapped off at the gate. You'll have to remove the stem from the valve a retrieve the broken gate. Or replace the valve with a ball valve (my recommendation)

I bought the same tool you did it correctly. You need to think out your options Mixing shark bite and press fittings works great the shark bite coupling is the best it allows you to turn 360 so the press tool can get in smaller spaces

I have a MCAVITY 125 gate valve from 1950 that has a very slow drip past the stem. I tried tightening the packing nut but that wont stop it. It's one of two return shutoff valves on my boiler.The other return shutoff valve is much newer and shuts the whole return side off. I thought there would be graphite packing string inside the packing nut,but theres some type of rubber washer in there,so I put the nut back on as water leaks past the gate valve when shut off. The stem width is .390" or 25/64. The thread width the packing nut goes over is .924" or 59/64. The rather large packing nut is 1.12" wide and takes a 1-1/8 wrench. The packing nut is 3/4" long. Do you know what size packing washer it would take? I think the ID would be 3/8" but not sure what the OD would need to be.

If I was faced with this, I would A. remove the washer put a couple of rounds of graphite down into the cavity followed by the washer then the packing nut and then tighten. B. If it still was passing water I would place a round or two or three more over the rubber washer and whack the packing nut back down.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thanks.I would prefer to not remove the washer for fear of possibly damaging it and having no backup washer on hand.Not sure how tight it is in there. Going by the large size of the packing nut would it be better to use the thicker 5/32 packing string instead of 3/32 and is teflon ptfe packing string ok? There's lots of room inside that packing nut. Is it possible the packing washer size it takes is obsolete? There's a local industrial plumbing supply store I was going to visit and see what they have.

Great information! Do you have to wet the packing? Would that make a difference? ~ thank you
@BobsPlumbingVideos3 ай бұрын
Maybe some waterproof silicone grease, no need to wet it.
