Thanks to my fans and subscribers for hanging in there during the last 5 months of darkness! Life gets in the way of KZbin from time to time, and starting a position on a Learjet didn't leave me much time for videos. But now we're back!

This brought back lots of fond memories of flying a pair of 60's from 1996-2000. We were based in the Midwest (RFD) and had many trips into TEB. Miss it but still fly in my dreams.

Always loved the Lear Jet. Bill Lear was the gentleman that brought jet travel to Corporate America. The Lear is an Icon in business aviation. What a sleekly designed airplane with wing tip tanks. Just love the look of your airplane! Oh, I forgot to mention that beautiful landing at Teterboro! Not many Lear videos on KZbin. Would love to see more!!!

I just discovered your channel, May 2020, and I'm glad I did. This video reminds me of two things: 1. the takeoff roll begins like a drag racer and 2. the climb out -- back in the seventies I was listening at night to the Monterey ATC on my little multiband radio at home. ATC cleared a Citation for takeoff. A minute or two later ATC cleared a Learjet for takeoff. ATC: Citation, what's your altitude? Citation: We're climbing through 4,000. ATC: Learjet, the Citation in front of you is climbing out of 4,000. Learjet: We're at 6,000.

Six years late, but I'm so glad I found this video because I'm about to purchase your incredidle L35A for MSFS and I appreciate the performance data that you shared in the comments below! I fly a lot of DCS in VR, but when I want to enjoy MSFS, my go-to airplane is the awesome C414! BTW, I got my PPL at TEB in '98 (when there were a couple of flight schools there). Crazy busy place to learn, but so glad I had that experience! It was so busy, we had to go to CDW and MMU to practice landings and T&Gs. I actually soloed at MMU. A good friend of mine was a Controller at TEB at the time, so he'd try to minimized my wait time on the ground behind the big boys, whenever he could, lol. Burned a lot of avga$ on the ground back then 😂 Love your videos! I thought I subbed awhile ago when I bought the FSW414 , but apparently I didn't. I 'm subbed now though 😅👍🏾

Thank you! Yes, it's quite a different picture! The thing you have to keep in mind in a jet is that when it's fully configured and on Vref, its already in the landing attitude. You fly the last 500-1000 feet of the approach already in the landing attitude. The result of this is that there really is no pronounced flare like there is in a smaller general aviation airplane. Pull the power to idle, gently arrest the descent, and let it land. There is no discernible flare.

@s4aviator804
@s4aviator804 6 жыл бұрын
billinga I can definitely talk about some figures in a future video. To give you the basic rundown, it burns anywhere from 1200-1600lbs per hour in the low 40’s at Mach .80. Or around 450 knots. It needs a 5000 foot runway minimum to be comfortable. 4000 is doable part 91 as long as the airplane is light. Takeoff rotation speeds are typically 117 knots at the lowest, 143 knots at the highest. Landing ref speeds are usually in the 120s, but easily get into the 130s if you’re up closer to MLW. Climb performance is excellent until you get up into the high 30s. If the airplane is light, initial climb rates in excess of 8,000fpm are achievable at 250 knots indicated. The airplane has plenty of quirks, like the nose wheel steering, fuel management, etc. I’ll probably do a “quirks” video at some point as well.
@billinga
@billinga 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent!! That is the information that adds context for me. Thank you so much. Almost every jet has "quirks" that are the result of design tradeoffs. It is interesting to me to hear what the predominant issues are and how they are addressed. In particular, the Lear series is iconic for jet setting and speed. But also for fueling when low, must be balanced. Thanks again for sharing and look forward to more in the 30 and the 414. Cheers!!
@s4aviator804
@s4aviator804 6 жыл бұрын
Learjet says that you can't fuel in a way that results in any more than a 125 gallon imbalance. Most FBO's teach their line guys not to let them get any more than 75 gallons out of balance. It's certainly an iconic airplane for speed! The easiest way to keep yourself out of trouble with this airplane is to not let it get slow. It has a very, very short, highly loaded wing. It also has a very intricate stall warning system to keep you from stalling the airplane, as the wing itself offers basically no aerodynamic warnings. It likes to go fast, and as long as you keep it fast, it won't hurt you. Provided you address all of the other quirks :)

hey man, great video! nice to see some learjet love on youtube. I'll be sure to watch your vids in the future. also, quick question, what N1 or N2 percentage do you guys usually use for cruise? Thanks.
@s4aviator804
@s4aviator804 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott. Our airplanes have the -2C engines with N1 DEEC’s. We generally set cruise power based on fuel flow rather than N1, and certainly not by N2. We start at 600pph per side, and if that gives us anything less than Mach .76, we bump it up a little bit to get to .76. What the N1 will end up being is extremely dependent on temperature. If it’s warmer it’s going to have to be a higher N1 to get the speed. Typically cruise N1 is anywhere from 90-96%. I just landed at CMH with the airplane, and tonight at FL380, and -30C RAT, 600pph per side gave us Mach .77 at an N1 of 93.2%

Fantastic video, nice high performance jet, video to the point with enough information to keep it interesting. I have a few questions. Whats a typical cruise altitude and at what mach? Also do these older 35s have good climb performance? Greetings from Australia
@s4aviator804
@s4aviator804 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! This depends on a number of factors, not the least of which are the engines. There are several different variants of the TFE-731 that can be installed on the 35. Many airplanes have the -2B engines, some have the -2C. The -2C has much better high altitude climb performance. We typically cruise between FL380-FL430. Typical cruise Mach number is between .76-.80 depending on how conservative you’re trying to be with fuel. As far as climb performance goes, they’re absolute rockets down low. I tell people that the airplane has a 10,000 foot per minute VSI because it needs it!
@anels9
@anels9 5 жыл бұрын
@@s4aviator804 thanks for the reply. Has quite awesome performance. How high can can you get before having to bleed of the vertical speed, does it need to do a step climb or can it go straight to altitude? :)
@s4aviator804
@s4aviator804 5 жыл бұрын
@@anels9 Depends on weight and temperature. When the airplane is heavy and its warm at altitude, you'll probably have to stop around FL380 or so for 20 or 30 minutes. At ISA, the airplane will basically go right to FL410-FL430. At more typical weights, say in the neighborhood of 15,500lbs, it will go straight to those altitudes on all but the warmest of days.

Hey Robert. Unfortunately the first Lear produced with EFIS was the 31, so the 35A just missed the boat in terms of getting glass. We do have dual long range nav systems in this airplane. they were just a bit tough to see in the video as they're located down on the center pedestal. We have a Universal UNS-1K, and a Bendix King KLN-900B. The 35A is certainly not, by today's standards, at the forefront of efficiency. It burns more fuel than some of its modern counterparts. The upside is that it costs significantly less to acquire.

Used to luv the 30 series Lear's but once you fly the 40 (45 for me) series there's no contest:-) The APU makes a HUGE difference to Ops, press fueling (NO Prist!):-) 51K cert Alt, reg fly mid 40's ABOVE the WX, Compartment TOILET! external luggage, Fadec engines, trailing link U/C, far better brakes...….so much better....:-)

@@OOpSjm I was to understand legislation was passed regarding noise ordinances that a factory 35A can't meet unless it has the mufflers installed on its engines?

The Lear 35 does not have an APU. The only Learjets offered with an APU are the 45, 75, and 60.

The 45/75 series don't have motors on the doors, just mechanical handles. The 20's 30's and 55 series had the door lock motors. Fun fact: it's the same motor (different unit) that works the adjustable rudder pedals and costs $15k to replace (last time one broke on me anyway!)
