The purpose of the provisional cast on is to allow the stitches you cast on to be live once again (after you remove the crochet chain) and you can then knit in the opposite direction. It is often only used when a pattern indicates for it.

I was just saying last night I didn't know how to do a provisional cast on, a new pattern I wanted to start called for it and I put off starting because I didn't want to look up instructions (plus I have heard is is a pain in the butt). Love your videos! Just a small suggestion, when you undo the chain it may be helpful to undo one stitch at a time and immediately put that stitch on a needle. This way to don’t run into the chance that the stitch comes undone and trying to figure out how to get it back. I have learned from experience and spent many hours redoing the piece. Hope I made this clear. Thank you for all your help.

What are the advantages or purpose of using a crochet hook to cast on stitches for a knitted fabric? Is this just another way to cast on? In the first example, how would you use the live stitches that were cast on with the crochet hook? Do you have a new pattern coming out that will use this example? This is another cast on, yes. But it is often only used when a pattern suggest it. The purpose is to allow the stitches you cast on be live once again so you can work in the opposite direction.
