if u wanna learn Arabic don't feel pressured by the many dialects we have because even us Arabs can't fully understand other Arabic dialects. Fus_ha (MSA) is the best beginning to learn the language because Arabs everywhere will understand u. At first they might think it's wired someone is actually speaking Fusha but once they know you are a foreigner they will start answering back in Fusha as well. However, if u still feel like u wanna learn a dialect instead, i suggest the Egyptian dialect because almost all Arabs understand it. Plus u can find hundreds of Egyptian movies and TV series to help u. (I'm not Egyptian btw 🤣). Fusha can be heared in the news, political shows, some old songs, all kids cartoons, even some talk or game shows. It's also used in books in general no matter what the subject of the book is. I hope this was helpful 😊

as a native arabic speaker, I can say that arabicspeaking people are integrating more Fusha in their dialects and daily use. the reason being is because people have now more access to media. that is why it's more fimiliar to use Fusha lexicalities . so learning MSA for a starter is totally fine and worthwhile..
@mariolis
@mariolis 2 жыл бұрын
Do you think the internet plays a part in this? Arabs from different countries are now connecting with each other online and therefore having to use a common language ? Also , with the internet being text-based as opposed to voice-based , did that have an effect since MSA is more common in writting than speech? What is the state of the Arabic side of the internet ?

There is a huge difference between standard Arabic and Arabs' dialects All Arab can understand and talk standard Arabic and each country has it's own dialect and sometimes we can't understand some words spoken another dialect like people from Morocco , Algeria and Tunisia so we will speak in standard Arabic to understand each other I remember my teacher he is Jordanian and he said to us "tag'aatطقعات" it means like wonderful amazing he was encouraging us ! But in Saudi dialect it's totally different!!! It means fart 😂😂😂 we were laughing so hard what is going on he is saying to his students " you are farts " 😂😂😂!!! We knew he didn't mean fart but at the beginning we didn't know what he ment until some one find it on Google. ( but of course we understand each other from the context even the words still different) I highly recommend you guys to start with standard Arabic and then move on to your favourite dialect

@@emirhan7482 I advise you to go to an Arabic-speaking country, cuz Arabic isn't like English, for example I'm learning English these days, and i found it possible to learn the whole English abroad..right. the opposite of Arabic (I'm a native Arabic speaker) cuz Arabic has several dialects every country has its own dialect, so if u go to an Arabic country, it will be much better. @@emirhan7482 I don't think learning dialects from books or dictionaries is quite ineffective. The only reason you'll want to learn a dialect is because you're in contract or in need of communication with local people. If you don't have these requirements, then better stick to fusha.

As a general rule, learn fusha, then derive MSA. Fusha handles things like the origin of verbs better than the rest, which should help you tremendously no matter which other way you decide on later.

Actually as a person who has studied linguistics at a Master's level (although my Phd is not in that field) I can say that Mike presents a credible and logical argument for MSA. Getting the underlining structure, a cultural introduction through the language and most likely texts/media/audio visual tools will often defer to MSA you will have plenty of material anyway. I would love to learn Arabic and although I am reasonably okay in Japanese, I am seriously wondering if I should start MSA or Egyptian dialect, but I would most likely start with MSA. Well done Mike; clear, concise and well presented! Now where would I start.....goodness....

what's amazing is that regardless of the different dialects across all arabic speaking countries, we can all understand each other due to the fact that all the words we use are originally deducted from formal fusha arabic. And all arab countries give fusha arabic in schools. The slang is used informally in day to day conversations. love that u have interest in the arabic language. ure really good at it too!😊😊

Mike, Shuk'ran jazeelan ye akhi! I really needed to hear this man! I almost thought I was just wasting these last few years learning MSA, and I've made such excellent progress too! Honestly, I've traveled to a handful of Arabic-speaking countries, and no one has given me a hard time or laughed at my Arabic. They actually really appreciate that I can speak Arabic, or at least try speaking it! But as far as dialects, I really will commit to ones nearby the major Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Egypt etc. Any advice going forward with my lofty goals, ye akhi? Shuk'ran wa Ma'Salama!

Yeah you're absolutely right Mike. Even for us Arabs we tend to speak Fusha with each other ( From different Arab countries ) in certain circumstances but it's not fully fusha, we call it اللهجة البيضاء in which you speak with your own accent but using universally understandable words and we still can tell this person is from which Arab country ... Greetings from Iraq

I recommend learning fusha. and then learning syrian, lebanese, Palestinian, or Jordanian dialects cause they are the closest to fusha ( with all respect to the other countries) Try staying away from gulf dialects or maghrebii (I'm moroccan myself) they're a bit confusing, and Egypting has a lot of turkish influence So 1- learn fusha 2- learn one those easy dialects to communicate like other arabs

If someone wanted to learn Arabic, he has to learn the classical Arabic or the Egyptian dialect Both can be understandable in all over the Arab world And the Egyptian dialect’s pronunciation is more easy than the other dialects Although the classical Arabic is very complicated but it is in the other hand is very expressive And thank you for your effort, I liked your helping others in learning Arabic Greeting from Kuwait 🇰🇼

There was a funny story I heard, a Malaysian went to Egypt and took a cab and he said to the driver, “I want to go to the University” in Fusha arabic. The taxi driver turned his head, looked at the Malaysian and said “sadaqallahul Adhim” implying how classic Fusha sounds.

I agree. I'm a native arabic speaker from Kuwait and I suggest you learn MSA first. As Mike said, it will give you the foundation of the language and will facilitate your comprehension of any dialects later on. Now, you might sound funny when you speak MSA in the street, but the advantage of MSA is that you'll be 100% understood anywhere in the Arab world, i.e. clarity. Also, native Arabic speakers will appreciate that you are trying to learn their language and won't embarrass you by their funny looks for speaking MSA because they know you're a foreigner and that's normal. Native speakers sometimes actually use MSA in certain occasions (other than formal ones) just to sound funny or to add a sense of humor to the conversation. MSA is a very powerful and expressive language, with 16,000 word roots, giving rise to over 400 million words in the language. Arabic indeed is very rich in vocabulary.

Assalam alaykum, I'm Belgian and learned Fusha. After I married my Moroccon husband, I learned Moroccon dialect as well. I lived 3 years in Morocco. I can confirm that Moroccon men generally know Fusha. Moroccon women on the other hand, with the exception of women who studied at university, generally do not speak it, nor do they understand it. I don't know whether it is a Moroccon thing? Women are only recently studying more (20 years ago most women were ummiyyat), and I notice a big difference in the knowledge of Fusha between say 20 year old women and 40 year olds. So I'd say: even if among women fusha is not always understood, it is definitely regaining its splendor. Also, there is a beginning movement of people speaking fusha with their children (I'm one of them). Still very small, but more and more Arabs notice with globalisation that their dialects are of little use outside their own countries (with the exception maybe of Egyptian dialect with the older generations. But the time that all Arab films came from Egypt is gone by, young people no longer understand Egyptian better ).

MSA is the formal language and used in TV news and books. If you want to speak with locals, friends, watch tv shows, movies, live in a any Arabic speaking country then avoid learning MSA because it will make you be mad when two Arabs talk to each other. Learn to speak and listen to real spoken Arabic. MSA is never used in real life as language of converse.
