In this video, practice the signs for MOTHER, FATHER, DAUGHTER, SON, SISTER, BROTHER, and so on. You'll notice that female signs tend to be signed at chin-level, and male signs at the temple/forehead. You may see some variation in these signs, particularly with respect to starting handshape (given the compound sign history explained in the video). Timestamps to find each sign are below, and next family videos to come for extended family in the next few weeks :) Happy Holidays!
0:15 FAMILY
0:36 MOTHER (or MOM)
1:04 FATHER
1:32 PARENTS
1:46 BABY

@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this comment! You are totally on the right track. Nowadays, there's a lot of conversation around gendered signs in ASL (similar to other languages, also seeking to find common ground for gender-neutral terms). While there isn't one definitive way at present to change all these family signs to gender-neutral, signing them at mid-face level (as you suggest!!) is one way! I suggest checking out this article/vlog for some context and additional signs to consider: silentgrapevine.com/2018/01/gender-neutral-inclusive-signs-queer-asl-ponderings.html Thanks for flagging this; I'll look to share such resources and signs more regularly!

Thank you for your wonderful videos and sorry if this was already asked: does the sign for parents change if you're referring to parents of the same sex?
@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Grace, great question! This is still an evolving process -- but I have seen this sign PARENTS used for -- generally -- parents, and then also to sign PARENT or specifically a gender-neutral version - signing the same 5-handshape at the middle -- more on the *cheek*, instead of the chin or forehead. Thanks for the great question! OH and to add: If there's someone specific that you're learning for, you might consider asking *them* what sign they prefer for parent. :)

what is relatives in asl?
@ralphu.7568
@ralphu.7568 2 жыл бұрын
I've seen where the sign for brother and sister did come from the forehead and chin but just use the pointer finger when came down to hand. Didn't use the shape you used here. So is it ok? I know some people might sign different ways. It just gets kinda confusing sometimes. You see one person sign something one way and then someone else might it a different way. Means the same. So is it really a preference? Also. When doing the sign for mother or father, does the sign have to be on the side of the forehead or chin or can it be in the middle? Again. Is it just a preference thing? I think a deaf person would still understand me if I did it in the middle.

For children, does the number of kids you are talking about increase the more times you gesture/sign it? Or do you still just sign "lots of children"? And the same for just one child. Do you just do it once instead of twice? Or only one hand? Or do you just hold up 1 finger for 1 child before you sign children?
@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chelsey, great question! No - the sign typically bounces twice either way. If you're referring to "a child" in the singular, you can take the bent open "B" handshape (with one hand, make a "B", then extend your thumb and bend all 4 fingers at the big knuckle) fingers outward/palm down, and bounce it very gently twice on one side. Like you're patting a single child on the head.

Hi Destiny, yes those signs would be very different. DIFFERENT is made with the index fingers in neutral space, starting together and moving/arcing away from one another. For "mean"... Can you clarify which meaning of the English word "mean" you're talking about? (It has a few meanings, thus a few different signs. I can't think of any that look like DIFFERENT, but maybe I'm forgetting a meaning.)

wait so is there a difference in hand shape between "sister" and "correct"?
@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith 5 жыл бұрын
Yes - SISTER is an "L" handshape (index finger and thumb extended) whereas CORRECT is a "1" handshape (just the index finger extends)

I don't see a difference between brother and siblings. Am I missing something? Thank you. I love your videos.

Hi, great question! They're similar, because the sign SIBLINGS is essentially the sign BROTHER followed by the sign SISTER. Watch closely to see how SIBLING does start just like BROTHER but then the second half goes to the *chin* (like SISTER) before concluding at the hand. Hope that helps!

Another good question! No, that sign means "kid" as in child, not a baby goat.

I'm trying to learn sign language & teach my son he's 6 months old. When I speak to him it's in Spanish. Is it all the same? Abuela/Grandma, Tio/Uncle ect.
@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith 3 жыл бұрын
If you're using ASL, then yes the sign GRANDMA can translate to either "Grandma" or "abuela". (Think of ASL as own language.) The concept is the same. Note that Spain and Mexico each have local sign languages. Learn more in my free FAQ about different sign languages at ASLmeredith.com/FAQ

my mom signs mother by putting an “M” up to her jaw and father by putting an “F” on her forehead. is it not right or is it an older way to sign that since she learned when she was younger?
@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, good question! I'm not sure about your mom's specific situation, nor am I sure whether those signs with "M" and "D" are part of signed exact english (S.E.E. - a different sign system). I can tell you that they're definitely not ASL - if you're looking to use ASL, I suggest using the "5" handshapes at the chin and forehead. (Even in videos with older signers, I don't recall ever seeing an "M" or "D" for these.)

I Can't seem to distinguish how she signed 'siblings', I know brother started at the forehead and sister started at the chin but siblings went by so fast I cannot tell where she started.

The sign SIBLINGS is the combination of BROTHER and SISTER! Simply sign both together as one sign. (And as a tip, did you know you can slow down any KZbin video by clicking the video menu (3 dots or a gear icon) and selecting "speed" to be 0.5 or 0.25? Hope that helps in the future!)

Did you literally sign "again, movement, change, can"? 1:22
@ASLMeredith
@ASLMeredith Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's right! ASL grammar is different from English. That's an example of topic-comment structure in ASL: the topic here is effectively "change the movement" -- so MOVEMENT CHANGE, CAN. "the movement, change it, you can!"
