Learn Cantonese - numbers 1-99, months and years

Hi guys!
This time, I talk about the numbers 1-99, the months of the year and how to say what year it is.
I'm not super happy with how this turned out since I could have told you more about the days of the week, days of the month and all, but maybe I'll do that in another video just on the calendar!
Here's what I'm rambling on about in the beginning:

As a native speaker, I always used the N sound and rarely ever L, even for "you", I use "nei" instead of "lei". From what I understand though, so long as people understand what you're saying, it really doesn't matter and there's not necessarily a right or wrong. That said, sometimes sounds get 'borrowed' from Mandarin and because it's seen as a more "proper" dialect, it's used as a reference for what Cantonese words should sound like but for words that sound completely different, we're just kind of left on our own to interpret what is correct. Certainly doesn't help in situations like these though when you're trying to teach it to someone LOL.

how long will it take to get as good as you with regular practice?

That is soooo hard to say! I've seen some people reach a reasonable level of fluency in a few short months and others take a lot longer (me, haha). I suppose it depends not only on regular practice, but how and what you're practicing. However you're doing it, just keep on going and as long as you're learning more each day, you'll get there!

I've heard this is called the 懒音 or something, where they can't differentiate the l or the n

HI Bruce - going through all my videos and see I never replied to you! Yes, that 懒音 (láahn yām) (lazy tone/sound) is so much a part of Cantonese! The l and n ... the omission of the "gw" sound (for just a plain "g" sound) and "ng" (which gets lost ... like "ngūk kéi" (house) is literally just like "OK" with no 'ng' sound). I remember learning Cantonese so properly in class, then realising that on the street not many people spoke it "properly" ... I suppose it's like "must have" in English which is usually spoken as "musta" :D
