Cantonese Corner Hi, I have a question, I’m just starting but I don’t understand why when I put the word “this” into the translator it only says “ni”? But when I put “these” it says it completely, it says “nidi”
@CantoneseCorner5 жыл бұрын
@@samuelm9799 Hi there! Sorry for such a late reply. I'm thinking it is because the "go" is just your classifier for people and mainly round-object things. So you could have "nī jek" or "nī tiu" ... so that's probably why. Although "nī go" is the most common, I'd say when you're talking in general, but if talking about a specific thing that uses a different classifier, then I can see why the dictionary would only give you the "nī".

I hope that more and more British people will learn Cantonese, because the United Kingdom will cooperate with Li Ka-shing to build a Hong Kong city. Many Hong Kong people will immigrate to the UK by then.

Hi Felix ... yes, hóu nòih móuh gin 好耐冇見 long time no see and apologies that it’s been even longer this time!! Hope all has been well with you. I have never heard of this idea for a “Hong Kong city” before but support it 100%! Would be so cool if that does happen ... it is soooo sad to see the HK mentality and culture under siege. Those in power should be celebrating and preserving its uniqueness, but all they want to do is create this huge, homogenised, horrible GBA 😓 I know things change and we can’t stay the same, but it could have been managed so much better ... by all sides. I would love to live in the UK - so much history and culture. I’ve only been there once but have a lot of friends from there. Can’t wait to be able to travel again once Covid is under control (or managed). Take care! 🤗

wow, I really have no excuse. I'm 31 and have been frustrated all my life not knowing exactly where to start or not keeping up with it really, but my mother's language is cantonese and I just can't seem to register to anything what so ever. I would love to be able to learn to finally communicate with my grandparents but I just get frustrated and give up. I really think it is inspiring to watch your lessons and just hearing how smooth and fluent your accent sounds when you speak it. I hope I too can learn it still at my age. Again, I really have no excuse. How long did it take before you realized you were carrying a conversation or understanding?
@CantoneseCorner5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vanessa - thanks for sharing that! Being able to communicate with your grandparents in Cantonese would be like opening up a whole new world I would think! And oh my gosh, you definitely can learn it at your age!!! Ppl always say you have to be super young (like a child) to learn a language well, but I think it's more motivation and perseverance that makes the difference. I didn't grow up with it, and I can do it, so if I can, anyone can! As far as carrying on a conversation and understanding...honestly really simple conversations (like "Where are we going?" "Do you like this/that?") were really quick -- after I suppose a couple of weeks and then it just grew from there...but I was in Hong Kong and surrounded by it, so that of course makes a big difference. I wish you luck and happy learning!!

@CantoneseCorner6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! It's: "Hi! Daaih Gā Hóu" ... which literally means "Big Family Good" and translates to basically: "Hi everybody!" (The "daaih gā" meaning "everybody"). In characters, it would be: 大家好 ! You might also hear a variation on my other videos (or other people's) which is: "Néih deih hóu!" which is the same, but replaces the "Daaih Gā (大家)" with "Néih deih (你地)" which means "you all". (Note that the "deih" character should have the little mouth character in front of it since it's not a proper written character, but I couldn't get my computer to write it that way!)

The “ni” sounds like “yee” or “lee” to me. Can you clarify? Thanks!
@CantoneseCorner5 жыл бұрын
You're right! The "n" and "l" in Cantonese are almost interchangable for so many of the words that are written in the ping yum as "n" -- néih sounds like léih almost always and the nī is pronounced as "lī" (those are just two examples) and yes, it does sound a lot like "yee" as well. All depends I guess on how slurred (or one might say "lazy" but that's not very PC, I know :) one wants to be! I hope that helps and thanks for watching! :)
@stacieicats5 жыл бұрын

"啲" is a Cantonese Chinese word. Do you hang out at 茶餐廳 & read hong kong comic books? Don't order ice water there, order milk-tea, 蛋冶,西多士同奶油多焊底,快馬,老細,趕時間。
@CantoneseCorner4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting! You know, I really should read HK comics to keep up my Cantonese 😅 and it’s funny how ice water is so not a think in HK (or really anywhere else in the world) compared to the US. Usually we use the tepid tea they give you in the cha chaan teng for washing the silverware 😅 ... I’m not a fan of milk tea in any way, but know that the yīn yēung style is sooo popular and then of course bubble tea which I just have never gotten into (sorry everyone who loves bubble tea!). Love love love 西多士同埋奶油多 (sāi dō sí tùhng maaih náaih yàuh dō) French toast and the condensed milk and butter toast (even better with peanut butter!) and yes ... everyone in HK is always 趕時間 (gōn sìh gaan) - in a hurry! 🏃♀️😂

Actually many Cantonese wordings are coming from English like lemon, taxi, bus, beer and etc....

Are you a native speaker? I can't imagine how anyone could learn Cantonese to this proficiency only from interest

Hi there ... I came to Hong Kong after university so am far from a native speaker, even though now I've lived in HK longer than I've lived anywhere else! I guess I was always just interested in meeting people and it's so much easier to do that when you speak the same language. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
