Yes, Chinese slangs are really cool. Which part of China are you from? It's awesome how you don't have an accent! You go girl! I teach Chinese etiquette and have a separate channel dedicated to Cantonese learning, it's so good to have found people with common interest! :)

Thanks for the explanation! It made it more clear for me. Actually, I’m learning mandarin, but I also think it’s useful to learn Cantonese if you want to comunicate better in the places where is more common.

It is important to point out that Cantonese sensu stricto refers to the speech of the city of Canton (=Guangzhou), sensu lato means the Yue languages. The Yue languages are distributed in parts of Guangdong and Guangxi, while within Guangdong, there exist another 2 Chinese languages: Minnan and Hakka. The speech used in Hongkong and Macau are both the so called "Standard Cantonese" (i.e. the speech of the city of Canton).

I just want to say that I do not like the fact how Mandarin speakers assume because a person can speak Cantonese, that they should be able to easily learn Mandarin because it has less tones than Cantonese. It is not always the truth. The only Cantonese speakers that can easily learn Mandarin is if they already know the standard Chinese writing system and then if they watch Mandarin programming with the Chinese subtitles, then they can easily match what they are saying to the subtitles and learn the Mandarin pronunciations since standard written Chinese is Mandarin. However, for an overseas born Cantonese speaker, it is often not the truth especially many are illiterate in Chinese. To them it is like learning a completely different language and they only way they can really improve on their Mandarin quickly and connect to Cantonese is if they learn the Chinese writing system and utilize romanizations heavily and likely have to use reliable online sources or apps to help them check up on the romanizations for the characters. They may need to also utilize reliable sites to look up Cantonese romanizations to learn the Cantonese pronunciations of the Chinese characters to easily help them learn and improve on how to read the Chinese words because they are more familiar with the basic Cantonese conversations and the tones and many of the Chinese characters are already words used in everyday Cantonese conversations and there are many other Chinese characters that are not used in spoken Cantonese, but have the tonal sound resemblance of the Cantonese words they have heard one time or another and then once they know the Cantonese pronunciations of the Chinese characters they have learned, then it is easier to transition into learning the Mandarin pronunciations of the Chinese characters and not only would their Cantonese improve greatly, but their Mandarin will also improve much quickly this way.

supertrouper I agree and even harder if you were only brought up speaking Hakka!! I'm ground zero on Mandarin and can just understand basic conversational Cantonese but I'm so cra p at speaking it and the people in Hk are ruthless if they see a 'banana struggling with canto!!

Mandarin is suppose to replace Cantonese, but it should be the other way. Mandarin's weakness is they use very few sounds (~200) and they mostly end with vowels, so there's lots of over use of the same sounds. For example: the sound "shi" has around 200 meanings: ten, yes, rock, corpse, silk, etc. Even with different tones, it's way over used. Whereas Cantonese makes much use of consonants (at word endings). So words are not so confused. If you had 3 sons, would you name them all "John"?

When the standard Chinese is read in both Mandarin and Cantonese, they actually sound very similar to each other, but the sounds are just slightly different although some of the words have totally different pronunciations between the two. However, the difference in pronunciations Cantonese and Mandarin for the same Chinese characters is a only small reason for their unintelligible languages. Standard Chinese is based off spoken Mandarin. Everyone in China including Hong Kong, Macau and the Guangdong province must read and write in Standard Chinese. So when Mandarin speakers read Chinese, it is 95% spoken Mandarin. However, when standard Chinese is read in Cantonese, it sounds too formal and does not match the way Cantonese is spoken in everyday conversations. When Cantonese is spoken, only half probably a little bit less than that of the words match the standard Chinese writing and the words that do not match the Chinese writing are often slang terms that do exist in the Chinese writing, but have been manipulated into their own Cantonese definitions differing from Mandarin and some of the words do not even exist in the formal Chinese writing at all. This is the bigger reason why Cantonese cannot be understood by Mandarin speakers and the Mandarin speakers have to put in a lot of effort to learn Cantonese. Had Cantonese speakers spoke in Cantonese following the Standard Chinese writing, a Mandarin speaker would be able to pick up on it very easily without a lot of effort.

well that because they are a completely different language … your breakdown is kinda stupid. why would a mandarin speaker understand canto ? they are not the same language. Just like every other language. You have to learn to speak it
@supertrouper
@supertrouper Жыл бұрын
@@ghostland8646 The breakdown was actually detailed. I made these detailed breakdowns to let people understand the detailed differences and similarities between Cantonese and Mandarin as most people are constantly making up false confusing claims if one knows one of these dialects or the other that they should be able to learn the other one much more easily. I forgot to mention that Cantonese and Mandarin kind of are on the blur when it comes to being classified as different dialects or languages depending on if they are in written form or spoken form.
@ghostland8646

@@supertrouper I speak Cantonese but to me it is a completely different language than mandarin. The problem is … the similarities is actually very little as 1-5% only. it can kind of sound like to mandarin in some word but 99% of Cantonese pronounce completely different or opposite to mandarin. canto tend to flip the sound / different first letter / grammar structure / flip the opposite / remove the end letter… of mandarin … etc. it make a huge different

There should be mention of more languages. Wu shanghainese wenzhou, min hokkien hoinam teochiu hokchiu, gan namcheung hakka, wunam seung, yuet cantonese toisan, mandarin. Wu zhijiang jiangsu north onfaai anhui, gan jianghsi hubei anhui south, hunan xiang, . Same here, they are languages. Cantonese speakers live all over the world so vietnam, brazil, canada, panama chinese can all use cantonese to communicate. Many chinese cannot speak mandarin. If chinese is like european, greater mandarin is like slavic, yue germanic, min like romance, wu ugric, gan celtic, xiang like baltic, standard mandarin russian, standard cantonese german, toisan like dutch or norwegian, hokkien italian, teochiu spanish, hoinam portuguese, hokchiu fuzhou fokchow like french, shanghainese hungarian, wenzhou like finnish, gan like welsh and irish scottish breton , xiang like lithuanian latvian etc., writing is perhaps the hardest part of learning any chinese language, but once you learn, even educated vietnamese thai burmese koreans and definitely japanese will understand. Min chinese is most common in thailand, cambodia, burma, malaysia indonesia philippines, meaning people can use hokkien or teochiu to communicate. Even new york and dominican republic has many yanping, wenzhou speakers, enough to hold church services.
