I always found this a very difficult issue in Dutch, partly because of the challenge of remembering which nouns take de and which take het. But thanks for the explanation! By the way, I looked at the Reddit discussion of this topic and found this wonderful statement at the end: "When all is said & done & you feel like you'll never internalize all of this, I recommend sitting on the toilet for an hour, crying & whispering "At least it's not German" to yourself over & over."

Dank je! I will be going to Belgium this year to join my family there so I'm starting to learn some Nederlands. This is really helpful. Do you have lessons about pronouns? How come some pronouns like "je" becomes "jij", or "ze" - "zij"?
@dylanschwartz9832
@dylanschwartz9832 4 жыл бұрын
Gerard Bautista I’m not completely fluent, but at least from what I know, the stressed pronouns (Jij, wij, zij) are used in comparisons. Here’s an example: Ik speel niet, maar zij wel. (I do not play, but she does) In a non-comparison, like: Ze hoort hem. (She hears him), you would use the unstressed pronoun. I know there are some exceptions and other rules, but that’s at least what I know.

This was a fantastic video explaining the fundamentals that I just can’t seem to find elsewhere! But I have a question - I’ve noticed something on the learning platform i’m using to study Dutch: The rule of bypassing -e for HET words starting with ‘Een’ is not consistent when it comes to sentences with ‘having something’. For example: A deer has a short tail = “Een hert heeft een KORTE staart. The adjective has -e but that’s not the case in the video. Can you confirm this and explain why, or if there are more cases like this? Bedankt!!
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain Жыл бұрын
Hm, staart is a de-word, so the adjective will always take an -e when put in front of the noun. So it follows the rule. Does this help?
@tajbelin1254
@tajbelin1254 Жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense, I made the mistake of focusing on the wrong noun which was the subject of the sentence (hert) rather than what it is describing (de staart). Many thanks for the quick response, love from London!

Alain, where are you from? I'm watching a lot of Dutch learning videos, but I'm not advanced enough to distinguish pronunciation between the Netherlands and Belgium. I seem to have heard huis pronounced closer to English house.
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain Жыл бұрын
From Belgium. Indeed, the ui, ij and other diphthongs' pronunciation variate a lot across regions. So I'd advise you to focus on the pronunciation of the region where you live.
@andrew_owens7680
@andrew_owens7680 Жыл бұрын
@@LearnDutchwithAlain LOL, the region where I live is in America. But it should serve me well enough to know that your pronunciation is Belgian and to listen carefully to the differences. I speak French and have had to deal with wildly different pronunciations in Canada as well as vocabulary and idioms. However, focusing on the grammar should be the same.

I almost hear no difference when you pronounce these: Kl"ei"n Probl"ee"m Is that because you speak with a specific accent ? 🤔
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain 3 жыл бұрын
Well, there is actually a difference. It may be because of your background, some students have challenges with specific sounds in Dutch. But indeed, it could also be because of my accent. Ei is pronounced differently, depending on the region you're in. You can listen to the ij (same pronunciation as ei) here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJ_(digraph) and ee is like e: in phonetics.
