Want to learn how to say YES and NO in Finnish? Then you've come to the right place!
Ps. Excuse the bad audio, I didn't have my external mic on me so I put the volume as high as I could when I was editing, but I realize it's lower than usual so be careful!

California Finnish here but what I recall repeating the verb was the original affirmative. "Sataako ulkona?" "Sataa" I think "kyllä" was an imported concept.

Kittoksia!! three comments here :) 1 in practice I have seen, sometimes, "joo" is also used as a sort of equivalent to, "let me see" ... people say joo when their mind is trying to figure out something and feel that expressing a sound buys them time, so they say joo. 2) sometimes people say both: joo, kyllä which would be "yes, yes", 3) and for no, they almost never say just ei ... they say something that sound like "ei o". I am trying to figure out that "o" sound.

Haha true true, there are a bunch of combinations eg joo ei = no, no ei kyllä = definitely not, and like you said joo kyllä = yes! I've never actually noticed this ei-o thing! :O

“Ei o”,”ei oo” and “ei ole” all basically mean “no it’s not” or something similar

And there there's the "double positive" (sarcastic) form of "joo joo" (meaning don't try to pull my leg).

@@pasiojala3227 Does "Jotakuinkin" means "Pretty much" or "Something along those lines"?
@pasiojala3227
@pasiojala3227 5 жыл бұрын
Either and both. There is no direct translation, so "Jotakuinkin" can be translated as 'approximately' (likimain), 'pretty much so' (aikalailla niin), 'more or less' (enemmän tai vähemmän), or any other way that means 'for all intents and purposes, but debatable if exactly that or just close'. With language it's also important to note that different people add their own connotations to words, so it's hard to know and carry over all intent and subtext. (I like wordplay in general, I hope these other ways to say the same or similar thing are remotely useful or entertaining.)
