This is the second of sixteen tutorials which take you from first look to a level of basic proficiency so that you will be able to make simple mechanical parts for assemblies or 3D printed items. These early tutorials are very simple and by the time you are getting toward the 16th you'll be feeling quite accomplished if you pay attention and do some practise.

I plan on using for cutting mdf on my openbuilds lead 1515 . Lots of 18mm mdf speaker rings and speaker enclosure parts . Once I master the very basics I'll need to learn how to convert drawings to g code. This information is incredible.

Thank you for your videos. The are quite clear and very useful. I sometimes have a bit of a problem chasing the viewing angles but aside from that, I am really enjoying them. I have had decades of experience using the Autodesk program that this was derived from, that of course being AutoCad. I even taught v12 of it for a time at one of my local colleges. But then I stopped using it for about 5 years and in that time it morphed into Fusion 360. The one thing that irked me in this transition is that AutoDesk apparently had decided to force the user into using the mouse. Back in the old days in AutoCad, I did all my work directly from the keyboard, as you would know, it's not that hard once you think in 3d. So I had been looking for a command line driven method of using Fusion, but have yet to find that. Anyway, again I do want to thank you for the videos, they are most helpful in learning the "modern" interface.

Welcome to the channel. I've done quite a few hours on Autocad but only as an educator which doesn't really equate to a full time user. Perhaps there will be a way for a power user to get into a command line eventually, I'll never forget seeing an astro physics professor on a mac, diving straight into the linux command line and working at least as efficiently as the GUI. I've been looking out for the next input peripheral after the three button mouse for a long time now. I thought the space mouse was going to be it but no, a useful extra at best. Then there was a $100 peripheral 15 years ago which sensed hand gestures but that didn't catch on. Jasen, make good use of that pause and scrub function in the KZbin player. I haven't heard of anyone wearing it out yet! Take your time and play back those parts where I'm going too fast. Watch a few times, then try a couple of times by yourself. Most people do get it and of course you can ask me all the questions here that you can think of. As it happens, I'm launching two online tutoring products within the next week or two. Keep an eye out for that. Its for a price and it isn't cheap but its an option.

Hello Arnold, I'm only up to lesson 3 but have learned more by far than in all the hours I have previously wasted on books and other tutorials. Thank you so much for creating this series! I was ready to give up learning CAD before this. I do have one suggestion: As a laymen, I often find the full meaning of many of the CAD specific terms to be obscure. I feel that people like me might progress even quicker if there was a glossary of terms that took a paragraph or two, when needed, to truly explain the scope of common CAD terms such as constraint, feature, tool, etc. (What's the difference between a feature and a tool?). Perhaps you have a Grad student you could burden with this task!

Thanks for the feedback Peter. I'm looking at ways to expand a version of the PDF into an e-book and that would be a valuable piece of content to include in it. If only I had grad students! but alas I left the uni teaching post behind a few years ago and then, haha, I never actually graduated myself. A feature is usually describing something about the 3D model. In 3D mechanical CAD even a planar face is know as a feature, any edge, cavity, protrusion or hole, and even dimensions are also sometimes termed "features of size". A tool is usually a software thing for performing an operation in the computer program, they can be buttons in the ribbon bar above or listed in drop-down menus for example Fillet, Extrude, Pattern, Revolve, and in the sketching environment; line, rectangle, trim, extend, all kinds of constraints. Now I'm warming up to this.

Glad its helping (Bob or Christine). Here's how you delete things:- Open the data panel on the left (use the little square icon at the top left made of nine tiny squares) Navigate to where your work is kept and click to select a file. Right click and choose Delete.

Good question! I do find the default background colour good enough for most of my work however its a personal thing and it depends on the lighting in the room where you keep your PC. A lot of design offices keep the ambient light low and they minimise the brightness of the screens so that an eight hour days is easier on the eyes. That's a great goal, 3D printed r/c planes and parts is something I'd love to do myself.

I was frustrated with other tutorials but am enjoying yours. One thing I have trouble isstarting the drawing off on the correct plane. It is very useful to have repetitive exercises, where you use the same techniques over and over. Thanks for the effort.

G'day Tim, thanks for the good feedback. If you get the free download of the PDF with 16 drawings you'll also get screenshots of my preferences which can help with the initial orientation thing. When I published the original version of these basic tutorials I didn't bother at all about part orientation and told people to relax and get on with learning to model. Wrong approach! So many people are really worried about this so I published my preference settings and I've also pointed to some other resources about re-orienting a part elsewhere. People really do worry. Really, the only time it matters is when you're setting up for CNC machining or 3D printing but even then there are a million ways to correct it. So let me know if the preferences don't help and I'll give you the next thing to try.

Had to follow the alt. build a couple times as must've missed something (the circle didn't turn black when I put a radius on it) but it worked fine the second time.

A few tries always helps. To be honest, having the lines all black is the right way to be but you can really shrug that burden off, you don't have a planeload of people relying on your precision at this stage. A blue line here or there means that there is a small risk that the geometry can be inadvertently bumped out of its true shape. Another three hundred hours of practice and you will be in full charge of all these concerns. One day there might really be an umbrella pointed at your neck but not today.

This is great, like a bunch of kids in a candy store. I repeated drawing #1 of the 16 several times until I could do it from memory. I also watched the video several times when doing my practice sessions. Now I am watching the 2nd lesson. It's like you took a four banger and turned it into a V-12. Meat and Potatoes all the way, sorry if you're a vegetarian, we all have our flaws lol. One thing I can say is having a good attitude and confidence in yourself will help you finish all 16 parts. You welcome all questions without demeaning anyone's charter. If it doesn't make sense, you add the correct terms to bring it up to speed, communicating the lingo is just as important as doing the drawings. I know I will forget and that's ok. Sooner or later, it will be part of my conversation. Lesson #2 will take more time but there's a lot of new steps and short cuts to learn. Thanks again.

Okay, I finish with drawing one, it comes out great. How do I get rid of it after I have saved it to start a new sketch? It will not go away. OK Paul, pardon me, so you need to know how to close a document. When a number of documents are open at the same time you can see tabs across the top of the screen. Here's how you can experiment - open the data panel on the left side of the screen. There is a folder which comes with Fusion 360 called Design Samples. Open that folder and then open the three models in it. The bike frame, the lamp and the utility knife. Each of the three opens in a Fusion document. See the three tabs along the top of the screen? Each tab has a little X on the right hand side which you can click to close each document. Its fine to have a few open at once and you can switch between them by left-clicking once on each tab. Let me know how you go with this.

When my drawing was the only tap opened, I didn't see the x because it was all the way to the right of the tab which grows smaller as other drawings are opened. Hi David, I hope this gets you where you need to go. The first thing I would check is whether Fusion understands that the sketch is complete. You've pressed the 'e' key, does that get rid of the grid and change the toolbars from 2D tools to 3D tools?

I'm glad this is helpful Joe. I just went over the video again and I'm pretty sure I was just selecting the item I wanted to delete and hit the Delete key. I know that the backspace key can do the same job, and of course what I did use in the video was the Trim tool which looks like a pair of scissors and has a keyboard short-cut 't'.

Great question Adrian! Yes, look for the sketch in the feature time-line along the bottom of your screen, (you did enable timeline history didn't you?) Right click on that sketch and choose Edit Sketch. Thanks for prompting me, this is so important for new users that I'm going to make this the key take-away of the next revised tutorial. Its a huge time saver, I can't tell you how many students I've seen developing a very bad habit of deleting an hours work when a tiny edit would have corrected an error.

Good evening, Quick question on the construction lines on the mirrored sketch. Were they necessary or is it strictly for reference. Thanks for all the great instruction Dominic

You're welcome Dominic! and yes, the construction line is necessary. Remember that the Mirror Sketch dialog has a step where it asks you to nominate the mirror line. If that mirror line is an ordinary sketch line the tool will work however some experimenting will reveal what happens if your mirror line is a solid line when you go to use the Extrude tool. Using the construction line style means that there is no interference with your extrusions.

Hi Arnold, I have followed this job and for some reason when I hit the the select icon and then type E the drawing doesn't go into isometric so I can extrude. What am I doing wrong? Up to that point I followed your presentation 100% and it all works. Cheers Ian

Very frustrating when the very first thing that happens is that I cannot get the origin to show up like the screen. I get a green vertical line and a blue line to the left and red to the right. I just can't seem to get started.

I hope I can put you at ease on this one Don, it really doesn't matter which plane you begin on. Such a lot of people worry about this so I tried to cater to the concern by stepping through how to do it but the secret is that it really doesn't matter until you have your CNC equipment set up and ready to go. By then you will know much more about this aspect of Fusion. So long as you can choose any old plane (that's one of three) and get on to sketching, then you're on the right track.

S, its 'aspiring' rather than 'inspiring' and I have to admit, I am constantly thinking about those with an eye to earning a dollar with their new marketable skill. Its an article of faith with me that if people can make a dollar by serving a customer it pushes back totalitarianism and authoritarianism anywhere in the world, one deal at a time. It'll take millions of deals over a long period of time but this is what built western civilisation. Sorry, but this is me and because its what gets me out of bed in the morning, I hope you'll humour me just this much. Of course I want hobbyists and recreational 3D modellers to benefit just as much which is why I don't discriminate in other ways if I can help it. In years to come I'll be offering more options, not less, to young people considering career options and also to mature age inventors and entrepreneurs considering how to earn a living from new skills. You're welcome to enjoy the ride, just ignore all my promotional and advertising patter now and in the future.

Hi Ahmad, you'll see the Origin in the list on the left hand side of the screen. Click on the little eye to show and hide the point of origin. Part #2 Timestamp 1:00 To see the grid and axes, click on the 'Create Sketch' tool and you can see me do this in Part #2 at timestamp 1:25

Divendra that could be because you have a tool still active. There are probably a few different reasons however you can still do it the "normal" way. Click Finish Sketch and then when you are back to the 3D view, click on the Extrude tool. Give yourself a few more hours of familiarisation with Fusion 360 and I think you will find that you can use these shortcuts effectively. A bit of time makes a big difference in these early days.

In the second example, I don’t understand why the Construction Line was selected. Did you do that for a specific reason and if so what is it? I’m not sure what the purpose or main function of the construction line is right now.

Also, when I start a sketch and pick my plane my grid goes away and yours stays visible. I followed your original tutorial on matching preferences so I’m not sure how to keep the grid visible?

Thanks for asking Brenton, that's a good question and you're right, I didn't give it anywhere near an adequate explanation. A line is needed to indicate the mirror line when you use the mirror tool. A regular line does work however a construction line keeps everything nice and simple for when you use the Extrude tool. A solid line will mean that you need to click on each area having an enclosed boundary of lines in order to include those areas in the Extrude operation. Not a huge problem but a small nuisance.

Brenton, I'm glad to hear that you've gone to the trouble to match your preferences to mine, that will help. Start a new sketch in a blank document and look at the Sketch Palette which appears on the right side of your screen. The third item in the list on that Sketch Palette is a check box named Sketch Grid. Tick that on and see if that helps.

At the 13 min mark I can't get all the sketch lines to turn black. Re-did this sketch three times same result.

J that's a worry. But really, if you've got the part done with lines that are not fully constrained (and showing a black colour) it would be strange if it caused a problem. The worst thing that can happen at this stage is that you bump something out of position some how. You're not designing an Airbus A380 so let that stress run out of your fingertips and move to the next model. When you've done all 16 I think you'll find that you'll notice probably discover the cause and you'll be in charge of it. You'll certainly be all over it by the time you work through the intermediate tutorials and by then you'll probably be familiar with the Help system and some other great Fusion 360 channels.

I really enjoy your course and will be forever grateful, But :) I have issues. At this point I actually solved my issue. make sure you start your rectangle on the lower left quadrant and end it in the top right. Then "pull" the measurement for the centering somewhere where there is no existing measurement. i just spent an hour driving myself nuts because it wouldn't work as in the video. if you start from botton left to top right it works....or I am possibly the only one who ever didn't understand that :)

Hi there TT, sorry to hear about the frustrating hour you spent but glad to hear that you were able to discover the solution. I wish I could have saved you the heartache somehow but everyone has a different cause of tripping. It was always the same in the classroom and its a pity I'm not hovering at your elbow as I used to in the computer labs. Anyway, the good thing is that you spent that hour experimenting and trying things which is a blessing in disguise; it was an hour which you spent getting to know your new tool even if it coincided with frustration and angst.

If I would have kept a closer eye I would have seen it but I looked everywhere but not on me not following exactly. Jose, the manufacture workspace is something I intend to cover but that will not be in the near future. There are a few other topics I need to cover first. I'm always looking out for good content to recommend but there isn't a lot out there. Is episode 2 the last completed for the updated series? I look forward to episode 3. I cant thank you enough for doing these! Whoever is designing the AFusion interface should be immediately fired. It must be the most unnatural interface I've ever used in 40 years. The way the mouse buttons are used is absurd. Engineers should NEVER EVER design a software user interface. You end up with THIS. Shouldn't it default to Orbit view instead of DELETE???? If we could only get Microsoft 3D builder with a descent toolset. That is how a 3D interface should be designed.

Mitch, I just sat down to complete the planning for the revision of Part #3 and I know its slow going. I should be able to go full time on this pretty soon, its just a matter of keeping everything going while I put the necessary income streams in place. Until then its going to be a bit of a plod. Since the old series is really quite similar to the new UI I hope people can get the benefit by switching back to the original series when they get to this point. Most find it do-able. As for the mouse buttons, Fusion 360 really has the best approach I've seen in my 20 years of teaching all the main CAD programs out there; on the front page in Preferences there are six options to emulate other programs. Even Alias and Tinkercad are in the list. See 'Pan, Zoom, and Orbit shortcuts' Try them all out and use the one that suits you best.

You're right Lance, I'm showing two methods. One is the easy way which I can't leave out but there is a better way. Lot's of people are up for a challenge which is what I'm trying to give them. Hopefully it will be clear enough as you work through the next few tutorials. Learning by doing seems to get most people into it.
