Thanks Arnold. As a High School Teacher in New South Wales, I find your tutorials an excellent resource to share with my students to give them an introduction to 3D CAD, and to learn the basics. We go on to develop these skills for 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving. I really appreciate you going to the trouble of revising your tutorials to keep them up to date. The students find navigating around Fusion 360 so much easier with these revisions. Thanks again for your efforts.

I've just watched the first 3 of these videos. They are just great. Easy to follow and just what I needed. Some of the other "tutorial" videos I've seen on KZbin leave you somewhat confused. Not the case here. You are an excellent educator, so thank you so much for taking the time to pass on your knowledge. And I just drew the part from video 4 from your drawings, without watching the vido first. Now I can see if I went about it the right way !!

Hi Arnold, I have just complete number 3 and with few a few rewinds managed to get it. You do it well and your easy to follow. I think in one of your sessions you asked what we were going to use this course for. I have just about finished a 1/10 scale model of a RC Venice water taxi and as I can't source the deck fitting parts I plan to design my own and print on the new 3D printer I have bought for the job. Wish me luck. I am a retired fitter and turner so understand most of it but its just about getting my head around drawing on a computer and not a drawing board back in the sixties, when I served my time. Cheers and thanks a lot. Now to part 4 Ian

Well, after 5 or 6 tries I finally managed to make the part correctly. I was watching what symbols showed on your drawing and comparing them to mine. I finally caught the missed quick steps in using the constraints to get the mirrored parts to join properly. I may have to go through this session a few more times to make sure. These lessions will help me when I get to the point of designing my own parts. Thank you.

Good on you John! These tutorials cover a lot of ground in a short space of time. Repetition not only trains the reflexes and neuron pathways but also helps to pick up on details that are easily overlooked in the initial rush. You'll make a gradual transition to designing your own parts but thankfully there are lots of useful tutorials on KZbin while you make the journey.

It can be a bit fun. I myself had drawn the curve a bit higher than was shown in the example and so got a heart shape when I applied the tangent constraint. All I needed to do to correct that was to grab the point where the two arcs met and drag it up a bit. Then the curves joined properly. I am happy that the videos talk about not erasing your work and instead fixing the problems on the fly. This is one of the great powers of CAD, that you can modify existing designs and have them update.

I have had a go on Fritzing and East EDA, just very basic stuff. Also Tinkercad a little but prefer Fusion. Looking forward to your tutorials on electronics. Your way of teaching Fusion reminds me of the way Rosetta Stone teaches Italian, going over the same basics things until it sticks. Here is the list of Playlists on my channel Jason; www.youtube.com/@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360/playlists After the 16 Basic Tutorials you'll see the Intermediate playlist but since I published those I've realised that people need a good understanding of Bodies and Components and so I've got two tutorials in the Components playlist so far. They are at beginners level, do those first and then take a look at the intermediate playlist. I'm glad you asked this question, I've discovered that most people are unaware of the other materials available here.

Greg, I am working on an eBook but it'll be to support the 16 Basic Tutorials. I can certainly include a glossary to that when I get to it but It'll be a sort of compendium of the most common questions I've had in the comments here. After that I need to write one about how to get a superior engineering education without university. Anyway, I think what you're looking for is something like the usual manual that most software has and Fusion 360 does have one like that. Click on the little question mark at the top right of the Fusion 360 window and you'll see a drop-down menu, click Learning and Documentation, Product Documentation. That opens a web-page with everything, start with the 'tour of the interface'.

Great content Arnold, clear and to the point. I'm just getting started in my CAD learning, so these are invaluable! I did have a question - I'm building my first project which will involve multiple pieces per what you're building. Do you recommend creating the pieces independently or building them off of each other? I.e. if two pieces fit together with a small offset, is it best practice to make one then use those dimensions to determine the second piece, or is it best to create them independently? Sorry if you've answered already, please point me to the video/comment if you have! Thank you!

Jon, you're the kind of student a teacher loves to have. You've foreseen my whole course here. Take it easy, plod on through the 16 Basic Tutorials, then do the Bodies and Components tutorials which are also pitched at beginners level and then you'll be about right for the Intermediate playlist which demonstrate both of the scenarios you have described. We call them Bottom Up versus Top Down. Feel free to look ahead at these and you might be able to understand how you decide which is suitable in which kind of project, however I strongly recommend that you work through the material in order so that you get everything working together and you'll be building an understanding of what you're doing.

Good evening Arnold, great work very easy to follow your tutorage. And would like to convert all my drawings to 3D for cutting out on the CNC Mc. You're right Dan! The most obvious things are so easily overlooked. Pardon me. Yes, I like the grid off since parametric CAD is designed to be initially rough and sketchy and only later driven into precision. In fact no matter how you scale your grid it really only gets in the way especially if you have that thing getting even more in the way with automatic snapping behaviour. The way to control your grid is a little tool in the toolbar that lives at the bottom of the main window in the middle of your screen. Its the second icon from the right hand side and the fly-out has toggles for the grid and the snapping and for setting the sizes of your grid.

Glad its helping Richard and very pleased to hear I'm doing something right. As for the positive or negative extrude, if you watch carefully you'll soon recognise that I might type in one way but often throw in the minus to make it go the way I want it to. There is always a reason but I'm purposefully keeping all the complexities as far out of sight as possible so that people just get on with modelling and leave the intricacies for another day - a day when they have several hundreds of hours of experience, (and that's not as far away as you think). You'll have a few projects completed by that stage.

When I use the tangent on the radius instead of joining the radius into one radius it form it into two separate full radius mush like a camel back.

I'm sorry to hear about this frustration Warren. Try starting a fresh document and do the exercise again. I remember my first tries in a sketcher, not Fusion but they all have the same way of working as well as the same idiosyncrasies. Watch the video, scrub back and forth over the part about that radius and look for clues about what's happening. Let me know how you go. I'm pretty sure its the kind of thing that often happens to beginners learning how to sketch, don't wear yourself out, take a break when you need to.

How do you close the present design project to get a clean slate to begin another?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 3 ай бұрын
Hi Dan, I presume you’re all across saving each document (and by the way, are you forming the habit of saving and naming as soon as you open a new document?). But to close an open document you click the little ‘x’ on the right hand side of the tab at the top of the window. Have you noticed that you can have a few documents open at the same time? Each document is in a tab and each one of them has that little ‘x’ at the right had end of its own tab. That closes the current document, and then to open a new one you’ll see a narrow tab further to the right of the open tab(s) with a little plus icon. Click that to open a fresh one. If you’re on the ‘Personal Use’ or free license, you can have ten active documents at a time. Let me know if you need help with that when it comes up.

At around 11 minutes, when I go fro drawing to modify, it doesn,t shift to an angle view. Also, when i go to put in the fillets, I can't see the hidden one without moving the drawing. I did match preferences.

Dave I just looked over this, the view turns to face me when I have the Preference checked in General>Design>Auto look at sketch but stops when I uncheck it. Please double check your preference setting for this one. I'm not sure about why selecting fillet edges through the model isn't working, someone else might see this and chime in.

I have no idea if you are still looking at comments but I'm on part three. I had a lot of problems because it was not doing what I wanted. Had to delete and start over and even then it had a lot of issues. Maybe this could be modified to have some correction done closer to the point of being done rather than waiting a long time, then go back and show the more global updates.

In the simple extrudes, the arrow points forwards on your screen but backwards on mine.. That is why I have to make it negative. Seen you do that deliberately when extruding backwards.. Is there a hidden setting somewhere or is it down to order of doing something earlier?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360

When you look at the point of origin with its red, green and blue axes, the coloured section of the axis is the positive direction. If you choose your sketch plane one way you can end up looking a certain way, if you choose it another way or some planar surface on the model you may not know which way you're looking when it flips around to face you. I often just grab the blue arrow and drag it the way I want it to go and then see if it needs to be positive or negative. Later on I'll show you how to re-orient your model anyway you need to so it really doesn't matter much.

I'm glad you asked Jennifer, in short yes, but I have to confess my production rate is pretty slow at present. My plan is to go full time on this asap. #4 is recorded and currently in the works but in the meantime I find that most people can get the feel for the most current version of Fusion 360 from the growing list of revised tutorials and revert to the older ones for the remainder. Here's the playlist with all the tutorials listed including all the obsolete ones. kzbin.info/aero/PLFCTgdiT5-kLBNvrkUNy63Gu1tWdRuKkr

Arnold, I am a woodworker in the US. When I hit the E key in sketch, the surface turns blue but doesn't go to the ISO view until I hit the home in the upper right corner. Is there a setting I need to change?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Жыл бұрын
Yes Rob, I take it you've downloaded the free PDF with the 16 drawings. Did you see the Preferences settings in the appendix there? There isn't actually one that governs this particular thing explicitly but I think you'll get the closest to my setup with these set as shown. My own installation does that on occasion and I'm not exactly sure why. Here's what you can do if it occurs: mouse over the 'view cube' in the top right of your screen, click on the little house icon that appears which represents the Home view and you will get an isometric angle. - Not automatic but one click is the next best thing.

Hi Arnold. I've watched this tutorial through several times and I can't seem to get the mirror to select the whole sketch. The base line and curve always remain un-selected, the constraint bars are missing from lines 3 & 4. What am I doing wrong?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 2 жыл бұрын
Just by your brief description Tony, I suspect you are making a selection box by dragging with the mouse but you could get the behaviour you describe by dragging from left to right. Please humour me and make that selection box by dragging the opposite way; right to left. Of course you can select the lines and curve (sketch entities) by left clicking one after another. Does this do the trick?

I can't get the lines to turn black, a message warns me that it's overconstrained and I can't validate these lines in black?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Жыл бұрын
Ricco, there are a few things that can cause your lines to remain blue and Fusion will complain about an over-constraint condition. I recommend that you complete the models even though you may not have everything properly constrained. You're not building a passenger jet liner here, so the consequences of something being inadvertently bumped out of position are not too serious. If you look carefully you will notice that I myself have left a few lines blue in these tutorials and I promise you, I haven't lost any sleep. After a few months of experience you will be familiar enough to know how to get a sketch will all its lines black, and you'll achieve it within two or three tries. I understand that this is not a satisfying answer, especially if you are a perfectionist however if you were to come back after running through all the 16 tutorials I think that much experience will probably help you to be more in control of this issue.

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Hi Arnold, I see it's 8:30 p.m. in Australia, thank you for your reply, and the problem didn't keep me awake, it was mostly a question of why and where I went wrong, when we is in training, it is a permanent questioning, and thank you for having revised your tutorials with the new interface. Thanks MM, I'm experimenting with the audio, there's a new thing which uses AI to cut out background noises like my squeaky chair and whatever's going on in the rest of the house but the downside is that is muffles my words occasionally. Hopefully I can tweak things a bit better and I'll try to remember to speak clearly. In the meantime you might be able to slow down the speed in the player by 25% or so.
