Werden, in German means more “to become." It’s meaning in German would be "Mein Handy became yesterday stolen." Yes, it would be translated into English as "was." But your not using the German simple past "war." Remember, think the language. Speaking a language and translating a language are two different things. Your examples are good if your teaching how to translate.
