Are you ready to learn Cypriot Greek? In this lesson, Valentinos is presenting to us 5 Cypriot Greek expressions. Are you of Cypriot descent? Are you interested in learning some Cypriot Greek expressions and communicate with Cypriots in the local dialect? if so, watch this video and learn the expressions.
About Cypriot Greek dialect
Cypriot Greek is the dialect that is spoken by the Cypriots both living in Cyprus and abroad (Greek Cypriot diaspora). Even though it is considered as a Greek dialect, due to the distance from mainland Greece and the isolation from the rest of the Greek-speaking world led to the development of various linguistic characteristics distinct from standard modern Greek.

Amazing. I'm half Cypriot (half English ) and there are so few resources about the Cypriot dialect. Kinda embarrassing I can say things in standard Greek, but not kypriaka! Inda pou kamneis; 'ah... kala...that's all I've got! ;)

@@nicb635 Yeah, but it's more of a problem for Cyprus to solve. They need to be proud of it and not see it as stigmatised or a lesser form of Greek. Then other nations can use their teaching resources.

my father is greek cypriot and his parents were born in arradipou in Larnaca, my mother is english but i was never taught the language. My cousins all went to greek school whereas i did not. This makes me so disappointed in myself because i'd love nothing more than to speak to my yiayia and papou in their native tongue :(

My dad is Cypriot and was born here in London, so I only picked up odd words and phrases because there was never much of an environment or reason for me to learn it. I understand the feeling of being an outsider among your own people when they're all native speakers and you're trying to recite basic words and phrases with poor grammar and pronunciation, haha.

I was in Cyprus earlier this year and asked the receptionists at the hotel about the Cypriot dialect with words from this lesson and they seemed pretty unimpressed, as if the words used here were looked down upon. Is there a tendency to think of the dialect as something of less value, or perhaps vulgar in some way, than "normal" Greek?

Είναι αλήθεια αυτό. Αυτό οφείλεται γιατί στην κυπριακή διάλεκτο κόβουμε κάποια γράμματα από τις λέξεις και φαίνεται πως τα μασάμε τα λόγια μας. Δες το βίντεο που έχουμε στο channel μας για τις διαφορές της ελληνικής γλώσσας με την κυπριακή.
