A T-stop is a braking technique used in ice skating or hockey to slow down or stop. Here’s how you can execute it:
Steps to Perform a T-Stop
1. Gain Momentum
Skate forward at a comfortable speed. Practice this at a moderate pace until you feel confident.
2. Prepare Your Position
• Keep your knees slightly bent for balance.
• Distribute your weight evenly over the leg you’ll keep as the lead (gliding leg).
• Keep your upper body upright and relaxed.
3. Position Your Back Foot
• Lift one skate slightly off the ice and turn it perpendicular to your gliding foot.
• The blade of the back foot should form a “T” with the blade of the leading foot.
4. Apply Pressure
• Lower your back foot gently onto the ice, making sure the inside edge of the blade touches the surface.
• Gradually increase pressure to create friction. Avoid slamming the blade down, as this can cause you to lose balance.
5. Control Your Stop
• Adjust the pressure of your back foot to control the intensity of the stop.
• Use your body weight and balance to keep steady. Most of your weight should stay on the lead foot.
6. Finish Smoothly
• As you come to a stop, ensure both feet are stable.
• Practice maintaining your balance and avoiding jerky movements.
Tips
• Start slowly to avoid falls while learning.
• Sharpen your skates if they feel slippery; dull blades make braking harder.
• Look straight ahead, not at your feet, to maintain balance.
• Wear protective gear (like knee pads) when practicing.
With consistent practice, you’ll get smoother and more confident at performing a T-stop!
