That's what I'm talking about bro! Keep trying and practicing you're getting it step by step. And keep doing these instructor videos Wally even for us that weld everyday it helps to watch other people. Can you do one showing your technique on your hot pass/ cap? My roots go in great but i mostly weld 7018 uphill for my fills and caps so when i switch to 6010 sometimes my slag gets ahead of me coming down the pipe.

Hi, Very interesting video young man. I noticed he was really shoving the rod into the joint and so much so the rod was flexing. How will the affect the quality of the weld and is there a risk of slag intrusion for that root weld? I ask because if I get too near to the work piece the arc goes short, feels wrong and looks a mess afterwards.

At the 2:05 marker, your saying look at that flex and that rod is bending. Now I've heard the root pass you need to push the weld into the pipe, your suppose to apply enough force that the rod flexes? If so, why would that added tension be necessary?

Sometimes ther rod will "toenail" meaning burn off to only one edge. Rocking the rod back and forth like that breaks the flux down on the end of the rod so it burns into both walls evenly instead of only burning into one side of the pipe and leaving a lack of fusion.

You know...time of day and outside temp..plus is it first weld of the day etc...but i run hot and go fast on tha bead fab or mainline..but thats just me. Miller has a spray transfer and lincoln has a globular transfer. Wally got a miller so he might have to flex that 5p+, and sometimes i do flex but then i usually soften it up if it gets tight. Bevel and land prep is always just about right so not too much knockin anything down. I like wallys vids tho..fun to watch

TheWeldProfessor what is the point of flexing the rod like that? I’m not trying to talk shit I’m Just genuinely curious. I’ve been a helper for about two months and none of the welders I’ve worked with have done that. Is it for stability in a one handed weld?
@b.a.lineman7582
@b.a.lineman7582 5 жыл бұрын
I could see where it has its advantages... stability for one yes but I’m not sure that’s why they’re doing it... the weld gap looks pretty narrow so you gotta kinda cram the rod in there. I’ve never seen this before... I’m gonna try it out... another lil trick up the ol sleeve
