In this video, I discuss what causes resource over-allocation and how to level your resources in the best way possible. I also go over some of the resource levelling tools in MS Project and discuss the disadvantages of using them.

Tom Stephenson is a national award-winning professor (George Brown College, University of Toronto) and best-selling author whose background in education spans nearly three decades. thanks for ur video.i am a new learner. i think the best way to deal with over allocation might be first. level all resources manually without split option (it will use total slack of each activity so the finish date wont be affected) second. increasing max unit as few as possible for resources that still have over allocation problem but it will increase costs third. using lags to decrease over lap between tasks if its possible but finished date will be affected i would be glad if u correct me if i am wrong

how do I set the allocation of a resource to have variations during the course of a task it is allocated?

You could go into task usage or resource usage and adjust hours on specific days (slide to the left of screen with mouse and right click to find task usage sheet)if you need to be really granular. Test it on a few tasks and see if that meets your needs.

perfectly exactly as I wanted, thought it was a gap in ms project features, next thing I knew, it delivers what I wanted

Hi Basim, did you up the max amount in the resource sheet? That will get rid of the little red guy, likely you have tasks overlapping with the same resource. That is a ms project response, a construction response requires much more information.
