Thank you, Grace! I was helping a Taiwanese friend with English a couple of days ago, explaining that when someone is being talked about and the same person unexpectedly appears, In the US we say “speak of the devil.” My Taiwanese friend said that in Mandarin, the equivalent would be “Shuo gui, gui Jiu lai” (說鬼鬼就來). I didn’t fully understand what he meant until now.

谢谢 Grace! This was very helpful as all the other videos you make! I just want to give an advise to the other fellow learners who follow you. Don't get bumped by these tricky characters. The secret is to get exposed to the language as much as possible (by listening to podcasts, watching videos, reading, etc.) and at some point you will just use characters like 就 and 了 naturally. Native speakers don't think about it, they just use them when it feels right. And this goes for any language you're learning. Good luck!

就 is temporally heavy in context usually an acknowledgement of a natural resultant [expectation]. Hence, when in use an audience often needs to recall a previously mentioned condition [this however can be assumed].

For the structure "event1 / action1 + 就 + event2 / action2", I think it doesn't have the meaning of expressing a thing that happens sooner or earlier? Because it's just a conjunction between the two events.

How many versions of 就 are there? I think I’ve learned 9 but I defo don’t remember them all.
@GraceMandarinChinese5 жыл бұрын
James Wong The answer to this question varies among people. It depends on how you analyze and categorize it. Even dictionaries have different definitions of this word. I don’t think you have to memorize how many versions there are. Just listen more and practice using it in different contexts. It will be okay! ;)
@JamesWongLife5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with this. The way I go about it is learning the different meanings, but not necessarily memorising their exact use and definitions. Then by having a lot of input, you will come across 就 or whatever grammar you’ve learned and see how it’s used in context and slowly get used to it and it’ll become part of your active language. The downside to this way of learning is it doesn’t test well, often the grammar is taught then a test is given for the chapter within 5 days which isn’t enough time for new grammar patterns to be internalised. It’s a common phenomena that people can test well at a language but can barely speak it, I think the reverse holds true as well.

Chinese particles are really difficult to understand, and 就 jiù is one of the hardest. I've never been able to wrap my head around it. (But at least it's not 了 - the most confusing of all) So thank you for trying to explain it. I gave up trying to learn Chinese over 2 years ago, but my Taiwanese coworkers - I've lived in Taiwan for 5 years now - are encouraging me to try again. Taiwan is a great place to live, and my wife wouldn't mind staying here too, but the Chinese language is extremely frustrating and almost impossible to understand. Pronunciation and tone are too hard for me, and everything sounds the same (homophones) so I can't really distinguish any of the words. Plus, if I'm to be honest here, I find the language quite monotonous and repetitive which I don't find particularly appealing to the ear. (Korean and Japanese are much nicer to listen to, but that's just my opinion.) So anyway, I've been researching the language here on KZbin to try and get a better understanding of it before I even think about trying it again. For what it's worth, your videos are well made and enjoyable to listen to. So keep up the good work, and best of luck for the New Year.
@GraceMandarinChinese5 жыл бұрын
Peter Bayne Hello Peter! Thanks for sharing your thoughts to me! Glad you enjoy living in Taiwan:D And I’ve also heard some of my foreign friends said Chinese sounds are a bit hard to distinguish due to the similarities. It does take some time and effort to get used to it. But if you really want to, it is definitely possible to learn this language! I wish you the best! Happy new year:)
@peterbayne72275 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply, I hope you are enjoying the New Years celebrations. My apologies if I come off a little negative sometimes, but I had a really bad experience trying to learn Chinese before and it's put me off trying it again. ("Once bitten, twice shy" as the saying goes) One thing that I think is often overlooked as a difficulty with Chinese is that it is a high-density language. That is, each syllable contains more information on average that, say, an English syllable. So Chinese can convey the same information, on average, with fewer syllables. This means that information comes at you much faster, leaving your brain less time to process it. I find that my brain can't keep up with even very simple sentences for which I already know most of the words. I'm always stuck like a deer in the headlights frantically trying to understand what was said, while the conversation has long since moved on.
@GraceMandarinChinese5 жыл бұрын
Peter Bayne Your analysis of Chinese are what experts are talking about! Amazing! You really have a great perception! I understand your feelings, I struggled with English for a long time lol. One thing is you need to have motivation, understanding why you want to learn this language. And then make some plans, maybe doing language exchange, taking online courses or learning 5 vocabulary and know how to use them per day. Don’t need to be rushed, take your time, start from little things, form some little habits that are related to Chinese, enjoy the process because I think once you enjoy learning it then you can keep moving forward! 加油 加油💪
