Think Kenny Werner’s approach is the best. One line (that you like!) at the time, one voicing, one rhythm, one tune etc and don’t move on to the next before until you effortless mastered it. Sing the lick is great btw!

I kinda quit jazz for a while… I don’t know is i will come back to it… i love to listen to it but I don’t know if i love the process to play it… i hear so many great musicians that i don’t feel like I’m relevant. Some are so advanced that it seems impossible to reach that kinda level 🤷

It's not about being the best, it's just about having something to say. If you keep playing, you'll eventually find your voice and have something to say. Then people will enjoy listening to you

Come on Noah, u r using your vocalcords the right way, dont have to apologize. In my opinion this is the right way to learn playing what u hear in your head. I'm a singer and love to scat and I think real improvisation starts with playing or singing what u hear right in the moment. I think Jarrett is a good example for this, using his vocalcords as a support to bring his spontaneous ideas to the piano. Thumbs up 4 this lesson.

Thank you, Max! Agreed- vocalizing seems to really help build that connection. Appreciate the thoughtful comment 🙏

I think that another way to staunch the flood of online information is to latch on to a few teachers you like, and follow them regularly. If you get bored with one of them, or if you think they're not at your level, just unsubscribe. They want you to hook up with them forever, but that's not what YOU want. Excellent lesson, Noah, on how to internalize a lick and use it on the bandstand.

Thank you so much for this. A lot of times I've felt like an idiot because I just can't wrap my head around these concepts. I have no jazz background so a lot of the things discussed in videos just go way over my head.

Ein sehr gutes Video!! So übe ich meine II-V-I Verbindungen!

@Noah Kellman to be fair, you have so many good videos that I want to take from and work on but Im just not good enough yet to fully implement, so I really need to just take a few and focus on those and not worry about all of them.

OOOh I see thank you man, thank you very much I realise now I've been doing this (even if Im at an extremely low level of course) cuz I'm very stubborn and lazy and I've difficulty learning licks and stuff but when I encounter one lick I play with it a lot and not doing the classic exercise and then suddenly appears in my play in strange way (maybe melodicly maybe only rhytmically) Thanks man, Now you are giving me more drive to learn!!

Hello, thanks for your video. What is the software you are using that makes the chord you're playing apprear ? (ex : you pressed G D Bb and C, and "Gmin add4/11" appears). Thanks.

hey Noah, thanks for another extremely useful video. i was wondering if you’ve heard some of Elijah Fox’s stuff? he uses some amazing arpeggio techniques and beautiful modern textures. the way he harmonizes his progressions is also unique…would love a break down if you’re interested and ever get the time!

Great video! Interestingly, it's the complete opposite for me. I can hear and sing everything perfectly but my fingers just can't get it right the first time. It's always trial and error untill it matches with what I'm hearing in my mind. Do you think I should change my approach? Thanks!
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman Жыл бұрын
Ohh gotcha! In a way, you’ve got the hard part down in my opinion. I would systematically try to learn the things you hear- repeat them with good fingering so the next time you hear something similar, you can play it no problem.
