I speak fluent Korean, and the thing about the language I've naturally picked up since childhood rather than by studying is that I understand it only natively, not systematically. So if someone were to ask me how to say "should" and "should not" in Korean, I would have to think long and hard, and even then, only come up with a vague answer. Your videos are highly instructional even to native speakers like me. Thanks Billy!

I totally agree with you, Victor. I always say: "I don't realize how little I know about English until someone asks me to explain something." Lol :)

Is this because one wouldn't say something like they would in English, in Korean? I've found that literal translations or direct translations are difficult in this context.

I tried to watch many videos and I still can not understand the difference between should and have to. However, your explanation is clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much, Billy. Happy New Year! wish you good health and prosperity!

Two questions 1. what about past tense? Is below correct? 어제 병원에 가면 좋았어요. Yesterday you should have gone to the hospital 2. Why did you use "에" in 빨간 불에 길..........?

+Toy Trevor Using "should have" is a bit different in the past tense. There are a few ways to say it. One way is just the past tense together with the "have to" form (야 되다 or 야 하다). Another way I cover in "Learn Korean Ep. 79." And 에 has many uses, one of them being "on," so "on a red light" or more naturally "when the light's red."

A lot of time it seems like the first clause is used in the past tense, even when talking about the future. 했으면 좋겠어요? Should I? 이거 빨리 했으면 좋겠어요. We should finish soon.

Exist two ways of saying "I will" in Korean, 1. Take the vs and add; (을/ㄹ) + 것(이다) Conjugated in formal levels be like; FORMAL: ~ 것입니다/~겁니다 POLITE: ~ 것이에요/ ~거에요 INFORMAL: ~ 거야 PLAIN: ~것이다/~거다 2. Take the vs and add; 겠다/ ~ 겠어(요)/ ~겠습니다/ ~겠습니까? So maybe you got miss understood between second way and the pass tense that have this "ㅆ 어/아 etc. 요 Actually exist a video here of the future tense, search it out ;)

what is more accurate translation for "should" and "shouldn't"? because somebody used V+ 야 되다 and V + 야 안 되다... I am bit confused
@rielhan8548

That more translates to i have to or have to because 가야 돼요 means i have to go rather than i should go, if you get what i mean.

It would be like if you study korean it will be good so as if it will be good then you should so it basically means you " Should "

Isn't this like using "if" in korean? Like in your example 한국어를 더 열심히 공부하면 좋아요. I read this as If you study Korean harder, it will be good.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 9 жыл бұрын
Griffin Strayer Yes. Literally, it is the "if" form since it uses 면. However, it can translate more naturally in English as "should."

Check out my video about "If" and "When" on my channel which explains how to use this form. It's 으면 after a consonant and 면 after a vowel.

먹어 = conjugated verb. 먹으 = nothing by itself. the 으 is there to add a vowel sound before using something like 면 because it's awkward to say simply "먹면" without a vowel sound in between.
