My mama spoke only Sicilian until she went to school and learned English, but she married an American who only spoke English, and she did not teach us her language. I would love to learn it! What is the meaning if the three legged woman on the Sicilian coat of arms?
@LearnSicilian
@LearnSicilian 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! A simple modern interpretation of the three legs represents the triangular shape of Sicily. But, this understanding is incomplete. This shape is based off the Triskelion, an ancient European symbol. The Triskelion can be found in almost every European culture (see the flag of Isle of Man). People first attributed the creation of the symbol to the Celtic culture, but it is even older than that, more likely Neolithic/Aryan. 3 is an important number to ancient Europeans. This influence can be seen in modern day Christianity with life/death/rebirth, or father/son/holy spirit. But this concept came far before Christianity. And so one of the first representations of this concept can be seen some 5,000 years ago in the form of the Triskelion or "3 legs". Representing all things: past/present/future, creation/preservation/destruction, sprit/mind/body, land/sea/sky. It represents all things. The "spiral" of life.

You aren't American by blood. You are what your ancestors are. I am half Italian and half Scot-Irish. My name says so... Laird. Scot. My grandfather's name Budassi: Italian. Lots of Italian in my family especially that I knew and hung around so I go for that side a bit more but I also love and am proud to be Scottish- Irish. Everyone in the USA is European. Nobody is American. American is a citizenship because you were born in America ( which we call the US anyways.) Nobody is truly American by blood.

I'm not Sicilian or Sicilian-American, but I like the sound of Sicilian and at the risk of opening a can of worms, I'm glad to hear Sicilian in contexts other than the stereotypical ones shown in movies on TV. I think The Godfather is a good movie, for example, but I also find it cringe worthy that many people think Sicilian is spoken only by crime bosses. It's refreshing to see Sicilian promoted as a language spoken by ordinary people. "Era la vo! Sunuzzu veni!" (Sicilian lullaby.)

I have a theory why Italians in USA have a hard time letting their kids keep the language. Italians learned both Italian and their dialect in Italy. But there kids get spoken to in dialect at home so if you happen to meet other Italians then they may have different dialect. Just a theory. PS , I am from Sicily but grew up in USA and went through this in my family. Luckily as I got older I learned a bit of " real" Italian, but love both ..

I think that could be part of it. I think a big part was because at least when my grand parents came here there was pressure to become Americanized. My grand mother was not allowed to go to school unless she spoke English. Her given name was Giuseppina and her twin was Bennedetta. Their teacher decided that they would be called Joan and Betty. I didn't know until I was well into adulthood what her real name was!

What do you mean by "real Italian". There's Italian...then there's the Sicilian language. Two different languages.
@recyclespinning9839
@recyclespinning9839 Жыл бұрын
@trioguitar I mean the Italian language that can be spoken everywhere in Italy. My comment was from my experience growing up in the USA. When I got together with other Italian families from other regions here in USA, we found out we spoke differently because of dialects. The parents however spoke 2 languages, Italian, the specific dialect, and actually 3 languages as most had learned American English language after a couple years living in USA. Hope that clears up my comment. PS , my friends Italian parents were actually able to switch back and forth between these 3 languages depending on who they spoke with. 1. Italian if speaking to other Italians from other regions, 2. Dialect when speaking with those from their same region , 3. American English, when speaking to native born Americans, was something to see. Me personally I learned all 3 also, but obviously most fluent in American after living here most my life now. Just not enough practice in the Italian, and Sicilian languages.

That would be great! :D The Wren The wren used to have his nest in the car shed. Once the old ones had both flown out-they had wanted to get something to eat for their young-and had left the little ones all alone. After a while, Father Wren returns home. “What’s happened here?” he says. “Who harmed you, children? You are all terrified!” “Oh, Dad,” they say, “some big bogeyman came by just now. He looked so fierce and horrible! He stared into our nest with his big eyes. That scared us so!” “I see,” Father Wren says, “where did he go?” “Well,” they say, “he went down that way.” “Wait!” Father Wren says, “I’ll be after him. Don’t you worry now, children. I’ll get him.” Thereupon he flies after him. When he comes around the bend, it is the lion who is walking along there. But the wren is not afraid. He alights on the lion’s back and starts scolding him. “What business do you have coming to my house,” he says, “and terrifying my children?!” The lion pays no attention to it and keeps walking. That makes the little loud-mouth berate him even more fiercely. “You have no business being there, I tell you! And if you come back,” he says, “well, then you’ll see! I don’t really want to do it,” he says and finally lifts one of his legs, “but I’d break your back with my leg in a second!” Thereupon he flies back to his nest. “There you go, children,” he says, “I’ve taught that one a lesson. He won’t be back.” Kindly send it to my email address otipeps24@gmail.com Looking forward! P.s.

Why is man made to sound like english masculine and woman made to sound like english feminine? some men are feminine and some women are masculine. You can't put masculine and feminine on one gender because it's wrong. There are exceptions. I am female but I am very masculine. I am butch lesbian. My cousin on the other hand is a male but he is very feminine and he is gay. You can't name people as male= masculine and female = feminine because it doesn't apply all of the time.

The Sicilian root words for man and woman are older than the English words 'Masculine' and 'Feminine'. So they are not made to sound LIKE, the english words. The english words are influenced by these words and their lingual roots.
