in general, would you advise being more offensive or defensive minded?
@Dreynschlag
@Dreynschlag 7 жыл бұрын
well depends on the interpretation of "offensive" and "defensive". in my opinion it's most important to avoid being hit and to attack only while you stay protected because that's what you would do if those weapons were sharp (you might call this defensive).
@ricolaw2571
@ricolaw2571 7 жыл бұрын
Well let's think about this Mr. Haines. If you were in a real sword fight (because these are combat weapons designed for war), how long could you defend before I break through it to end your life? Or before I receive help and you get killed because there's 2 or more of us? all the texts I've read do not defend without looking for an opportunity to counter attack. You want to dispatch your adversary as quickly as possible. So defense only in pursuit of offense makes sense.

@Dreynschlag
@Dreynschlag 7 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for your feedback! If your opponent manages to displace your 2nd thrust the game simply continues depending on how he did displace: Therefore check first if you are still in a thrusting position or if you are ready to do another Zucken, Abnehmen or Durchwechseln back to your right side. Or maybe you are safe to leave the bind and do a Zwerchhau... etc. There a lots of possibilities depending on the situation.

A kind of defend is shown in our Vid. Nr.1 Make a Oberhau against a Oberhau and do a step backwords. Also our vid Nr.2 is a kind of defend "the Zornhau". Notice only defending is the best way to die, we always try to attack while defending. In the vids 3/4/5/6 and 7 Gedi only defends without an attack and without winning the initiative.

that is an excellent question. Unfortunately there are very few manuals about duels where the combatants wield different weapons. Maybe in the distant future we will cover something like this, but for now, we focus on sword VS sword, staff VS staff, and so on. Check out traditional gladiator fighting. There the fighters have different equipment. For example trident, net and dagger VS large shield and short sword. (Retiarius VS Secutor)

in this case continue your attack. depending on the situation there are a lot of ways to do so (you might for example try to thrust from Winden etc.)
@ziigwa
@ziigwa 7 жыл бұрын
But what if your opponent strikes from their side while your about to thrust them ?
@Dreynschlag
@Dreynschlag 7 жыл бұрын
First of all timing and recognizing the situation are essential for Zucken, Abnehmen and Durchwechseln. You have to attack in a way that forces your opponent to displace your attack (so otherwise he would get hit). Now you have to recognize wheter it's a situation for Zucken, Durchwechseln or Abnehmen - and you have to start your action while he is about to displace your attack. If there's an attack while you thrust (or an afterblow right after your thrust) your are in a strong defensive position called "Ochs" (ox) with your hands beside and above your head, your sword held in a thumb grip - as shown in the video. This protects pretty well against attacks from above. If he attacks low simply move into "Pflug" (plow). So your blade is between yourself and your opponents weapon and while performing your counter you have moved out of your opponents line of attack. If he attacks after your thrust keep in mind what Bernhard always tells in our videos after the technique: "Maintain cover and retreat in an orderly fashion."
