The king on horse back could be a Stallion, the best of the best horses, prestigious, expensive, opulent......

Indeed he could. All the Golden Dawn Tarot Kings are shown on horseback, as are the Knights (equivalent to the Kings) in the Thoth Tarot.

According to tradition Holly was named as fiery in nature and in Celtic times its wood was used to fashion spear shafts. I wonder if this had any influence on using wands (or spear shafts) to depict the element of Fire. Just thinking out loud ... :-)

I think it's a lion's head, which would make sense for this King. The lion is both a symbol of kingship and of fire.

I definitely take Kings to signify Fire and Knights to represent air. It gets complicated in the Thoth tradition as the Kings are renamed Knights and the Knights become Princes.

I was confused by Knights being Air and Kings being Fire. But with some teachers it is the other way round. My intuition it's the Knights are Fire and Kings being Air as they are "Thinkers and Strategist" of Monarchy Leaders.
