I feel like pole arms are criminally underated in historical martial art communities. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

Not underrated, just hard to transport and not convenient to spar with. They're not good choices for hema because it's just hard to handle a weighty top heavy item with a length that won't fit in a passenger car trunk
@the_metamancer
@the_metamancer 3 жыл бұрын
@@CtrlAltRetreat perhaps the better English word is underrepresented, because the difficulties mentioned it's just sad that ratio of pole arm instruction to sword instruction for example is vastly skewed.
@CtrlAltRetreat
@CtrlAltRetreat 3 жыл бұрын
@@the_metamancer I get it but there's really not much anyone can do about that unless they train at a club and use the club's equipment. Since most people want to own the stuff they use, well a polearm would be hard to even keep on display in an apartment.
@CtrlAltRetreat
@CtrlAltRetreat 3 жыл бұрын
@@the_metamancer It's a pity since historically the opposite ratio is far more likely and there isn't enough polearm v sword to get a feel for that among enthusiasts

This probably sounds nerdy, but this is my go-to channel for when I make dnd characters. I always like to center my descriptions on real-world techniques, even if I alter them to adjust to the fantasy setting, it just makes playing a character that uses weapons much more fun. Thank you for all the descriptions for weapons like the Halberd =D

hey Bjorn, can you please show techniques for Halberd against Longsword or even Polish Saber? Most of the people at my Hema club use only swords and I'm basically the only one who primarily uses a Halberd there after classes is done for sparring purposes. I'd love to see some techniques you'd use against swords.

use the point and patience they have to step into your kill zone before they can strike you when they do thrust. the burden is on them to counter you.

Ayy, this is incredible, finally some control moves! That's what I love about the idea of a halberd. Question though, These moves seem ok vs the same thing but how would these moves fare against other types of weapons? Like a sword perhaps. I know the reach advantage is there but still...
@darkestlight660
@darkestlight660 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine it would depend, since a sword would be able to reposition to strike you much quicker than a big weapon would. Though, I imagine you might be able to do a similar hook against a sword's hilt if you're precise enough

Hi Björn, the leg pull delivers a bit of wrong picture, coz you end up with a bound halberd while your opponent has a free avaiable weapon quite close to your unprotected side. May I suggest to end such "misleading" play always with a decent possible follow up? Maybe a second step backwards, so your opponent will fall. Or a weapon drop and close up with a dagger thrust to your opponents face? Just something that delivers the idea, that the leg pull is a suicidal move but a really really good one. :-)

Great videos and great points. I’d like to see some balanced fighting. These techniques work great when the opponent makes absolutely no effort to counter them or aggressively fight back.
11 ай бұрын
Well, that's how technique videos or performances work. There is a starting position, an initial input and a concept against it. These concepts were described in the books of the time in exactly the same way as visually represented here. Imagine how pointless this video series would be if I told my training partner to just do anything and be aggressive every time. I wouldn't be able to convey the concepts shown. Then it would just be a sparring video with an arbitrary outcome. Believe me when you look at the concepts here and understand... that you could react accurately in your described scenario. That's the way it is when you want to learn and understand martial arts, the teacher shows you something and you do it in an isolated situation.

But i like the idea to film some sparrings and then isolate some techniques afterwards!

After several years, I just purchased a spear. Now I’m wishing I had gotten a halberd instead! Still, there appears to be a bit of carryover in technique. Did Meyer address the spear at all in his manual? Thanks for the great videos and detailed explanations.

With the fifth play it looks like your opponent could easily plunge their halberd into you while you are pulling their leg towards you, as their halberd is pretty much free while yours is down at their leg, thus you being completely open to their attack, potentially even giving their trust more power as you are pulling them towards you. Is that actually the case or does it just look like it as your opponent wouldnt have the time to react if the play was done at full speed?
@livrasyt166
@livrasyt166 3 жыл бұрын
yes your opponent would have time to react and just stab you if your execution of this technique is slow/sloppy. this technique relies on throwing your opponent off balance so you can use the time to finish him off. but you can also faint with this technique. in other words: you are you are baiting your opponent by pulling then he will (hopefully) try to stab you. in that case you will (hopefully) surprise him with another technique and (hopefully) end the fight.

Bjorn, I'm a HEMAist in the US who studies Meyer. I have a question about the pronunciation of guards and various cuts. We pronounce Hau as HOW, but I'm not sure if this is correct, same with HUT like Zornhut. Are we saying it wrong?

"How" is OK i guess. I will pronounce all the techniques also in german for coming videos :)
