I know this video has been up for a while, but I think you'll find that monochromatic lick/trick a lot in Gatemouth Brown's stuff. I'm not sure what incarnation of him it was, he had a few different and distinct eras but he definitely messed around w/a lot of the chromatic stuff that Stevie utilizes a lot.

Nearly forty years ago at a very low point in my life, flat broke and with my wife in hospital and my children living with their Grandparents, I was driving home very late and very depressed when on the car radio I first heard Stevie - playing Testify. It was so riveting I had to pull over and it was so strong that it gave me the lift I needed. My situation gradually improved and a few months later I got to see Stevie live.

SRV is the reason I play the guitar, I love the sound and tone that he got, I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years now. The first song I heard on the radio was pride and joy and that song is my favorite, I also like couldn’t stand the weather and cold shot, I can play all three of those songs

I got to see Stevie several times from 85 to 91. In fact I had a ticket for his last show at Alpine Valley but wasn’t able to go. Which I hate till today cause it was his very last performance. In 89 I got to meet him back stage at what was called Deer Creek amphitheater in Noblesville Indiana. I had a friend who used to set up the stage equipment who got me backstage passes where I got to meet him a few moments that I’ll never forget. He was a real inspiration for my playing along with the greats like BBKing Albert King Lonnie Mack Albert Collin’s Muddy Waters and so on. Keep up your hard work brother.

I have been an SRV fan since "Texas Flood." I was 17 and listening more or less to the radio until my guitarist in my first "real band" outside of the neighborhood who was 10 years older than me introduced me to him. He picked me up for practice one day and said, "well you probably won't like this but this guy is amazing." He couldn't have been more wrong. The track he played for me was "Scuttle Buttin'" and I was absolutely floored. I couldn't believe the sounds I was hearing. I didn't know he played on Bowie's "Let's Dance" until later. I graduated high school and moved to the Seattle area in 1985. That fall they had a festival in Seattle Center called "Bumbershoot." At the time it was $6 to get into the festival and there were all kinds of top name bands performing throughout the Labor Day Weekend for $6 per day. I saw in the paper that Stevie was going to be there and told my room mate, "we're going to this. This is not negotiable." He was also into SRV due in small part to my influence so it was agreed to right away that we were going to get there early. I expected the line to get in to be around the block when we got there, but apparently not a lot of folks had caught on to Stevie in Seattle in 1985. There were maybe 6 people in line including us. I had been a fan of SRV for a full 2 years by this time, so I was just amazed that he wasn't more famous in Seattle. But hey, score for us as we had our pick of where we wanted to view the concert. We were right up front. Stevie hit the stage with "Scuttle Buttin" to start the show, just like the first song I'd ever heard two years previously. My jaw was on the floor the whole show. I mean seriously. I've never been that mesmerized in my life. Bonnie Raitt came out and joined him onstage for an instrumental and also "Texas Flood." What a night! Sadly it was the only time I got to see Stevie live. The day he died I started to wear black. I almost always wear black every day still to honor the man. I'm a professional drummer. Stevie is and always will be the GOAT in my book. Just the best. Well now I'm into guitar (later in life but hey better late than never right?). That's how I found your channel. Thanks for posting and looking forward to catching up on your backlog of lessons. Best, Marc (Gruvdrums) in Seattle.

Thank you so much for all your content and lessons over the past 15 years. I still remember when I first discovered your channel over 10 years ago. Life moves by so fast! I was still in high school when I found your channel and was starting to branch out from playing general rock music, into blues. One of the first videos I ever seen by you was your lesson on "the grip". I must've watched that video a dozen times, as it taught me how to do proper string bending. To my knowledge, it was the only video on KZbin back then with a teacher showing how to properly do string bends and position your thumb over the low E string (this made me realize the advantages of playing a guitar with a thick neck) You also had several videos on rake techniques back in the day. Over the years, I would send those videos to friends who were looking for help with blues guitar and how to properly bend strings. Thank you again for all your content and lessons over the years. You have given the world a treasure trove of knowledge.

Anthony, Congrats on your 15 year anniversary! I have for many years been fascinated by SRV adding the 9th and b9th to a dominant 7th chord. Being a bit of a theory geek, I've often wondered was he conceptualizing playing an E blues scale over the A7 chord. This to my mind is a very common improvising device which would be used by a jazz guitar player. He did cover "Chitlins Con Carne" by Kenny Burrell. Rock On! Blues On! Jazz On!
