Hey Simon, Thank You very much. I'm a beginner starting last year and since playing TLS and I have found it to be excellent and i use this all the time now for White and also as Black. It's so Easy to Learn, even easier to Remember (which I couldn't with a lot of the others). It's very flexible because I can change the opening move order depending on what my opponent is playing and it gives me an awesome attacking platform so I can launch in to the middle game which is where I struggled with so much before I found out about The London System. And when I have to defend I find I can stop a lot of my opponents attacks almost as if it was second nature because I have a much better feel for what my opponents are going to play because of those extra attacking lines you showed us. So for myself it's the complete package and the best overall Opening Ive ever used, hands down because of those benefits I mentioned above. Thanks for clarifying The London System and adding in the extra attacking lines, just great. Thanks heaps. Cheers Kev

Hello Simon! Great vid! :) At 19:10 you talk about 2...Bf5, the symmetrical system, where you recommend playing 3.e3 and 4.c4. Why not play 3.c4 straight away? Doing something similar to your example: e.g. 1) 3...Bxb1 4.Qxb1 e5 5.Bxe5 Bb4+ 6.Kd1 Nc6 7.Nf3 Nxe5 8.Nxe5 dxc4 9.e3 Nf6 10.Bxc4 e.g. 2) 3...Bxb1 4.Rxb1 dxc4 5.e3 e6 6.Bxc4 Bb4+ 7.Kf1 Bd6 8.Qb3 Qc8 9.Bg3 Nf6 10.Nf3

Best way to play The London System is 1d4 d5 2 Bf4 Nf6 3 e3 c5 4 Nf3 cxd4 5 exd4 6 Bf5 ... This way Black's light squared Bishop gets developed and both sides have equal chances . This line can also appear after the Caro kann exchange variation

Hello Simon, About the game in the first part of this video around 11:39, just after black recaptures with Bxc5. Why not instead of short castling play Qa4 pressuring the knight on c6 ? If black protects with Qc8 then the Greek gift is possible (Bxh7+) and a queen switch to h4 with check and then Ng5. If black decides to protect the knight on c6 with Rc8 then Rd1 seems strong and after the black queen moves (Qe7) to only then castle short.

Thanks so much for this valuable video....part of a series I am following closely. Looking forward to buying the more extensive content. Here's the funniest moment, IMHO: 25:00. "The knight can re-route...but can the bishop re-route? Not really...because you can't jump over pawns"!!

I used to love this system for it's simplicity and flexibility. After 1.d4 d5 you're basically playing VS black's light Bishop: if e6 then you go for a mate on the K side, and if Bf5 or Bg4 then you hunt the b7 pawn on the Q side. Just a year ago I had 76% win rate with white using the London but these days I've crumbled down to 30% cuz almost everyone is fully prepared against it, there is NO surprise factor anymore which is critical for us amateur players. The London became a yet another mainstream opening with lots of theory, since Top GMs took it as their major weapon. Now it's time for me to find some other unknown opening system for white to surprise my opps.

Thank you Sir, for your Chess Base DVD on The London System. When I bought it my blitz rating was 1100 on chess.com. Since I bought the DVD I almost exceptionally play The London as white, of course watching what my opponent does, and it is very often I go Harry, Harry and... boom.. boom and the readers can see my current rating (1428) and recent game on chess.com I just played: www.chess.com/live#a=175656 My FIDE rating is 1570 and recently I boomed! 1800 on the board... with The London! Thanks again. I strongly recommend that DVD to readers.

Hey Hayrapet, congrats on your success with the TLS, I have watched a few of your games and you play very well using TLS. The games I saw, you checkmated your opponents quite easily at least it looked that way. I think you have a great future all the best on your way to 2000. I am a beginner as well and since Ive been using The London System my rating has shot up. Now I have an Opening I can actually remember and implement properly (most times ;)) and Simons video has just given me even more new lines which ive just used and had good results. All the best with TLS for you to. Cheers Kev

OK I appreciate this. I have the Chessbase DVD and I have played the London in some over the board blitz. I crushed a lot of lower rated players but I played your line against . . .g6 from the DVD against a strong master and he just played 5. . .c6 and it seemed really solid. In another game I had a crushing attack against an FM but I missed a resource and ended up with an unsound sac. But that's blitz chess.

Been looking closer at the interesting idea of playing 4.f3 against the Kings Indian defence, and I've even gotten a chance to play it. Around 30:06 you talk about the 6.d5 move, but it seems to me to be a really dangerous move for white. I've found two games in ChessBase where black won both of them. After that move, taking on f3 seems okay for black. e.g. 6.d5 exf3 7.Nxf3 a6 and then black follow it up with ...Bg7, ...O-O, and something like ...b5, ...Bf5 or ...Nbd7 depending on white's moves. This seems solid enough for black and white seems too exposed to have any good compensation. I don't know the Albion Countergambit, so I can't speak to it's effectiveness, so maybe there is something I'm missing here. It seems, though, that white is better off playing 6.dxc5 with equal game, according to the computer (computer gives black a slight advantage with the above idea).

I got your London DVD and noticed that you don't cover 1. d4 c6 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bf4 Qb6. I think this is a really important idea for Black and it's becoming more popular too. It would be great to get some coverage. Also, doesn't Chessbase let you do direct updates to your DVD? It would be great to have all the information in one place. So far my games have gone: 1.d4 c6 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bf4 Qb6 4.b3 d6 I think this is a really tricky and clever move order from Black in order to meet White's equally cunning new London move order. I've also come across this very interesting system: 1. d4 c6 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bf4 h6 4. e3 d6 5. Bd3 g5 6. Bg3 Nh5 BTW: I really appreciate you supporting the DVD and it's a big part of why I purchased it. Before seeing this video, I wasn't sure I wanted to since so many Chessbase DVDs have some lines and then the author completely abandons the work with no further updates or filling in of major missing lines.

If you don't mind sacrificing a pawn, then 4.Nbd2 is an interesting idea. After 4...Qxb2 5.e4 you have a nice center and good development, which should give you enough compensation.

Could you please do a video about defending the Bishop in F4 as 2nd move ? The blacks tends to always come out with their bishop ( dark square naturally) to attack yours in F4 then will take it if you don't take theirs ! Either that or they come out with their knight in H5 to threaten your bishop in F4, they will also take it being a threat no matter where you move it to, eventually you have a crumbled king side ..:(
