You're so kind and generous for posting these amazing videos! Whenever I search a specific move on the ice I know that a coach Julia video will be the first thing to pop up and of course the first thing that I prefer to watch in order to understand the move! Thanks a lot, keep up the wonderful work!

I have no recollection of how I learned slaloms as a kid. The way you break down the movements really sheds light on how complex it actually is. I’m planning on teaching my basic skills kiddos forward slaloms next week, and as always your videos are super helpful for getting ideas for the class ❤ Thank you

I struggled with slaloms for months until I got a private coach and she immediately saw that I was basically treating them like half swizzles, or basically making the foot on the outside of the turn the skating foot. Slaloms were exhausting! But then she corrected it and I put my weight on my inside foot - within seconds I was slaloming up and down the ice. I love them now, so fun and a great showoffy skill to impress non-skating friends and family. I've spoken to others I skate with and they were doing the same thing! So I wonder if this is common? Maybe because it's taught in proximity with swizzles/half-swizzles, so newer skaters just lump them together? If you're struggling with slaloms, pay attention to where you're putting your weight. You might have it on the wrong spot. ⛸

I'm really struggling with slaloms. I go to a group class and actually the teacher doesn't have time to explain it to a doofus like me. She told me not to use my knees, which didn't help. She just said, "do this", then skated off to see to someone else. This video is great, because I need to be talked through it properly. Like you used to, I sort of do a half lemon thing... I know how I need to practise now... I think!!

That's how they do it in downhill skiing, I think - the outer foot is the main foot where most of the weight is

Basic stuff but also really important. I see how this helps towards spins since it lets you practice staying on the rocker. (My biggest issue)

My biggest issue with skating backwards is leaning to my forward on my rocker so my topic scratches the ice but I do this exercise every time I go skating and it's helping a lot
@tomodachi57
@tomodachi57 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, me too! It’s hard to lean a little forward while skating backward but not too far forward that the toe picks catch. I hope that practicing the backward slalom will help me with other skills like the two-foot turn where I can go from front to back but struggle with going backward to forward.

@@tomodachi57 I have the opposite problem with my two-foot turns: I can go from backward to forward more smoothly than forward to backward! I think it's my brain being nervous about the switch to backwards so hopefully keeping working on my confidence going backwards will help those turns too.
@Think--Twice
@Think--Twice Жыл бұрын
My solution for the two-foot slalom is to practise the single-foot slalom individually with ANOTHER FOOT GLIDE, which gives the skaters comfort, security and confidence. Once every single foot is ready with the strong inside and outside edges to slalom, combine two feet together. Otherwise, a very common mistake--inside foot is on the flat blade will happen.

I love watching your videos so I can learn to ice skate. I am in my 50's learning, and my question is when I am skating my feet cramp up so bad and I get shin splints, what can I do to improve that. Thanks again for all your tutorials, I plan on watching all of them,
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, that is a common problem, especially at the beginning. There are a few potential reasons. 1, you could be tensing up your feet causing you to cramp. 2, you could be tying your laces to tight over your arch which pushes on your foot and causes you to cramp, 3, your skates are not the correct size or shape for your feet.

My ice rink is always so crowded that I really cannot practice any of my moves without being run over. It sucks so bad. The only way forward seems to join the local skate club which is probably good anyways but I would still like to be able to practice at my own pace with some videos and not embarass myself in a club with people who are more experienced than me.

How long have you been skating? If you're just starting, just hang in there. We're in the middle of the busiest season, November - February. By spring break you should notice a sharp downturn until it ramps up again for the winter holidays.

@@seanmobley2610 thanks, Sean. yeah, just starting out. Unfortunately, ice rinks are only open from December to March here in Germany, so waiting for spring break won't work for me here... everything closes from spring to winter...
@seanmobley2610
@seanmobley2610 2 жыл бұрын
@@lyamorian767 Oh dang! Well it will fall off after New Year's. The next two or three weeks are the busiest. If you're taking lessons from someone, ask for their recommendation on times. Here in the US, many rinks have times for people who are more serious about skill building called Freestyle sessions that you have to be a member of the national skating organization to access (at least at my rinks). Coach Julia even did a video about them a while back. It is a bit more pricey because you have to purchase an annual membership to the organization, but it's much less busy and everyone there is there to practice, rather than just wander the ice. I don't know if Germany has an equivalent, but if you do maybe that's something you can explore. Either way, it *will* get better by mid-January, and if you keep going by February and March when it closes, you'll notice a much smaller crowd. Have fun!
