This video rescued me! As a kid and as an adult, I just have never been able to get the hang of stopping and no one has ever been able to tell me why. But as soon as you said not to lean too hard on the inside of the skates or you’ll just go forward, I immediately recognized that was what I’ve been doing wrong! So I tried the change in class today and it made a world of difference. I can’t believe it. I still haven’t fully mastered the snowplow stop, but at least now I’m headed in the right direction! Thank you!!!

It's surprising to me how hard this is to do. Is it that my muscles aren't used to making these movements? Probably also the nuances of feeling the skates. I'll keep on practicing!!! Yesterday I managed to spin, again I was surprised but this time because spinning actually makes me dizzy, yeah I didn't see that coming at all LOL. It's really fun to notice how important it is the keep the whole body engaged arms, abs, I thought skating was just a leg thing :D as a child I wasn't aware of how engaged the body was.
@CoachJulia5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the whole body is so engaged! I give so many corrections to my students all day about the core, back, etc! I love how our perspective on skating changes as we get older. I feel that I have such a deeper understanding of what I am actually supposed to be doing out there now. Keep trying with the crossovers, moving backwards is not a concept our bodies usually have to deal with.

Standing still, I can make snow with either foot individually. @CoachJulia Жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new skates! The sharpness will dull over time. Skaters often find that it is challenging to stop with freshly sharpened skates, and this will be even more dramatic when going from rentals, which are more dull than usual. Just give it time and those stops will come back.

I usually prefer to start my students out in a Jackson Elle Figure skate. (Here is a link if you want to check them out... amzn.to/2uTMFlY ). There are cheaper ones out there, the Jackson Mirage for example, but I feel that the Jackson Elle is a perfect beginner boot. They are durable, lightweight, supportive, are made of good quality materials, the lace hooks aren’t going to bend or break as some of the cheeped beginner skates will, and they really should last you a long time.

I disagree that the one-legged version is harder. I can actually do the one-legged one, but I can’t do the two-legged version. I’m fairly heavy (230+ lbs), so having a leg to shift my weight onto is important to help me keep my balance.
