The Japanese take care not to tie a widowmaker knot. This is when the fabric entering the knot and the fabric leaving the know are at right angles (as you did.) The knot tied that way is considered giving bad luck!

Thanks for the techniques. Thrift fun scarves to wrap your gift. If the giftee likes it they use it, if not, they pass it on to someone else.

We always wrapped things in fabric. Not just gifts. A large scarf instantly became a "tote" for carrying small items from the grocery store. Thank you for these creative packaging ideas! My favorite is Cozy and Joyful.

Hi Linda, you are welcome! 😍I haven't tried it but I am pretty sure these wraps would work with gifts of any shape. They may come out a bit different but as long as you use a piece of material that fits your gift nice and snug with just the right amount to tie at the end. I think it could work just the same as wrapping a square but with a square you will have a bit more structure to it.

Absolutely love this! Great demonstration. Do you have any calculator for determining the size? I have a 12x12x4 box that I would like to make one for, but I want to be sure I have enough to tie the knots.

Hi Melissa! Always enjoy your videos. Was wondering if there is a ratio or formula for calculating the amount of fabric needed for the gift size? Also, do you find that quilting cotton fabrics work well for this project? I have a rather large stash of quilting fabric!:) Thank You!

Thank you! Yes, quilting fabrics would definitely work to, it will have a bit more structured look but will look lovely as well. I kinda played around with the size of my fabric square and found that once I laid my gift in the center of the fabric wrap I should have at least 10" on each side of my gift to play with. My gift was 9" square and 3" tall. I initially cut one square that I knew would be a bit too big and tested the wrap with one single fabric and trimmed my square to the size that I liked the best. Once I found a good measurement I sewed two squares together to get my fabric wrap. So basically I just eyeballed it at first to figure out how much I will need. Not sure if there is a way to come up with an exact formula.
