At first, I really struggled to complete the track at all. When I finally managed to fly through it, my time was 2 minutes. Then, slowly it improved to 1 minute, then 40s, 30s, and finally, today I got 29 seconds! It's not quite JB yet, but the amount of improvement over 3 weeks is absolutely stunning! Just keep doing it and eventually, you won't believe, how good you are!

I'm of the Nintendo/Sega generation. I'm very comfortable with thumb control. I have a Radiomaster Zorro partly for the form (partly for the small size when travelling). I really struggled with the pinch grip.....until I realized I was treating it as a game controller by trying to hold it and control it at the same time, made even more awkward by my oversized hands. By resting the controller on the table (sim) or using a neck strap (outdoors) to support it and using my hands to really only control it, it changed everything! Hopefully this may help somebody else with huge bear paws trying to grip a relatively small controller.

Just like with playing an instrument or a rhythm game, it turns out that doing it faster is often easier than doing it slower. As soon as I picked up a bit more speed, it started clicking. The issue is that often this might turn out to be a bad habit, and you sacrifice precision with the speed, so I guess I'll try to find a healthy mix between practicing fast and practicing slow. Awesome series so far, thanks for all the effort! Joined the Patreon because you definitely save me time and give a lot of value with these videos!

I've been thumbing sticks all the way back to the 1997 edition Dual Shock on the PSX. I really thought thumbs would be my preferred way to use a radio controller. When I got a Mini 4 Pro I tried a pinch hybrid, and I was sold in 5 minutes. I'll take that technique into FPV without a doubt, I love it

Great tutorial... have bought the Avata 2 recently - used it quite a bit with the motion controller but now wanted to learn the real stuff. I got myself the remote controller 3 and started to teach myself in Liftoff following your tutorial. First couple of lessons were easy and straight forward. When it comes to turning and being precise it got really complicated - until I found out that in the controller settings in liftoff the stick sensitivity was set far too high for a beginner (like me) especially in the "center sensitivity" area - plus that the remote controller has relatively short sticks in its default setup. After changing the settings to the following I am just fine and continue learning without being frustrated too fast :-) - maybe that will be of help for others as well: Flight controller settings --> Rates model --> "Actual" (I think that's what the Avata is using as well) Center Sensitivity: 100(R) / 100(P) / 50(Y) Max Rate: 500(R) / 500(P) / 350(Y) Expo: 0.25(R) / 0.25(P) / 0.25(Y)

Was just gonna ask if any drone in Liftoff is similar to the Avata 2 re settings etc, I have been flying my Avata 2 in manual lately and I aint no expert but I can control it pretty good but I always try and maintain a safe height to practise. Actually flying in manual has improved me in normal and sport mode, and that's the main reason I wanted to do it. Learn the advanced stuff to improve my basic skills! :)

Never flown a drone before I came across your videos. Looking to get into FPV "Light" with the Avata 2 and wanting to fly it in Manual. Watching your vidoes - and after 4 hours in the simulator, I just set a 38 second lap time after 3 tries.. Super educational - thank you so much! Will definitely head to Patreon - this is exactly what's needed to get into FPV flying! Thank you!

That Strawbale track is quite hard as a beginner. If you want to practice with larger gates try Surtur - "Hiking Trail". Or even easier is Short Circuit - Pole Position which has the virtual gates. I think the FT Gremlin Boar quad is one of the easiest to fly. And if you remap turtle mode to space bar you can easily hit it without looking haha

I was a big thumb guy coming from vidya games as you mentioned. I've gotten much better results with a light pinch and when I find myself struggling to fly well I will look down and see that I've subconsciously gone back to thumb only grip, so I really have to force myself to get rid of that habit.

even on an xbox controller i used the hybrid pinch found it easier to hold throttle at a set placement so i wasn't having to release throttle to drop altitude, still use it even while using a flysky SM600 usb controller roughly 20hrs on liftoff these videos have been a god send for me to learn havent comitted to purchasing a drone yet not sure if i wanna build one or get an RTF

Great video! You talked about all the issues I had. Question: I use Hybrid pinching, and I NEVER use full stick deflection. Should I lower my rates? Or tighten my gimbal settings? It just seems like I'm wasting space. Also, I wish you would go in a little more detail about turning... especially sharp 180 turns around an object. The coordination dance of throttle and yaw is a skill that I still struggle with. Mine turns are either too sharp and snappy or too big and wide. What am i missing?.....Thanks for the rookie videos

I tried and tried to get around that first turn and I kept feeling I wasn't getting as good a look at the gate as in the video. Then, while fooling around, I enabled fish-eye view and voila, I could see the gate in plenty of time to get through it. I've since realised that increasing my lens size from 74 to 106 meant I could get a good look at the gates without fisheye. Being able to see what's ahead makes all the difference.

In the process of flashing my hardware over to ExpressLRS, and see if I can get my useless FrSky stuff to work. Gotta get an external antenna and flash it, fingers crossed I can get in the air soon.

Sadly, your FrSky stuff is not going to work with ELRS. But you can fit an ELRS module to your radio. But the receiver on your drone needs to be replaced with an ELRS one.

I'm using a thumb and I cannot imagine, I would use the pinch style because I don't have precision there at all...the other finger is just blocking my precise thumb movements...with thumb only I'm like 5x more precise than when pinching and my thumbs don't slide or have enough reach, apart from what was shown in the video...and I'm not a console player, PC only but I learnt to fly drone like this from the beginning...

I think I have calibration problems; if I leave the roll stick in the centre, the drone starts to roll (e.g. I cannot do the same exercise you do at minute 9:00). Calibration should be added to the troubleshooting (and by the way, I'm still struggling to find a proper calibration)

I had similar problems using a Radiomaster TX12 controller. I found that adding 0.05 of dead space for each axis helped a lot. I also had to INVERT Yaw for this radio. You probably have it good now, but maybe this will help others.

If you have too low yaw rate or too much expo then you deflect the stick too far and throttle management is hard. Try higher yaw rate or less expo.
