Learn how to play Planet Earth by Duran Duran by following my video. The most difficult 3 notes i've played ever! Not because its 3 notes but because to keep up that rhythmical playing for such a long time takes sheer practice and skill!.. I havent quite mastered it fully as I can hear (and know) I am out in areas. This must have been about my 1000th take! and still not happy.. I have no idea how many takes John Taylor had but it was real difficult for me this one..

Using flats Jay? I find for me it is easier to play it finger style, and actually on the main Video JT is playing Finger style, although this could be totally wrong. Great Video irrespective.

On the video he plays finger but the record it's played with plectrum. His recent tutorial also demonstrates playing it with a pick.

I played guitar as a kid but only picked up a bass one time ages ago. It looks like you're pressing down on the fret instead of between the frets...is there something I didn't know about playing a bass?

I play bass and fretting is pretty much the same as guitar. My guess is that he is pressing down on the frets directly to get a more precise tone rather than the sustaining tone that you get with pressing in between

You have to press down at the fret or as close to the fret else you will get fret buzz. That's not actually the technique. The technique is quickly syncopating the notes to get that sound. It's the hardest 3 notes I've ever played! As it's do quick.

He's pressing closer to the fret than the average player but not on the fret.

I have my doubts as to whether Taylor played this on the recording. He was a noob on the bass and can barely play it now judging by his tutorial last year. Like Trevor Horn played Frankie Goes To Hollywood's bass parts on Relax, I reckon someone more experienced played this on the record. It's a really tough bassline. You did a good job here.

Yes agree I heard Taylor was new to bass at the time of the recording . A difficult song for me just keeping the pace and syncopation in time. I could probably do better now 👍. Thanks for your comment.

It was John who played it on this song. I was following them since 1981 when this song came out and saw him playing it live without any playbacks.
