I spent ten years as a music journalist. Unlike every other writer in the business, I always submitted my article to the artist for final approval before I turned it in. In ten years, John Taylor was the only artist who didn't request a single change. "Don't change a word!" he said. Easily the nicest person I ever interviewed.

JT is a great bass player and fast as funk! DD got me into music, along with a few others and it never left me. Did I make the big bucks...nah.... but in my head I will one day. I think they were almost ignored as musicians when they came out, why? Because your little sister liked them, which for those of us listening to 'cool stuff', meant they were instantly rubbish. Once that prejudice was out of the way years later, it was a joy to find them again and realise how good they were both as writers and musicians - then I saw them live ... and as performers. Total professionals, as talented as anyone.

@@samsmith3025 ... ABSOLUTELY! When I first heard the bassline to Rio, I was blown away! Oh man, I was IN! When their *_'new album'_* came out, it was around the time I was already deep into Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Scorpions (eventually getting into Thrash) etc... As a kid in the 80s, I didn't really have a prejudice for music, so diggin' Duran Duran was an easy call for me... John Taylor's such a sick bassist!

I first heard Duran Duran when Hungry Like The Wolf hit MTV, like many Americans. I immediately checked out their other songs and was floored by Rio’s bass line. So many new wave bands at the time we’re all synth and drum machine driven. These guys actually played their instruments and played them well. Watching John now doing this is awesome...thank you. I love the stories and how the songs came to be. Please do more of this and if you could do Rio that would be great.

I have to say, Duran Duran has some of the best bass lines. unlike many songs where the bass line just reflects the root note of the song's chord progression, actually having a bass melody of sorts makes the songs so much more interesting. so thank you for bringing your music to the world!

OMG, John! This is a dream come true for me. You were literally the first person who got me interested in guitar of any kind, simply by listening to your incredible playing as a teen in the early 80s. My first purchased guitar was a bass, in no small part due to your inspiration. DD received attention for a lot of things, but for me it was always about the music, particularly the musicianship and pure talent of the band members, something shamefully overlooked and underrated, IMHO. To this day, you are still in my tier 1 of all-time favorite bass players alongside Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, and Justin Chancellor. While I have great respect for the entire band, your sound and playing was the absolute essential backbone that made DD what it was. Thank you so much for sharing these insights!

Dear John, fantastic video! You haven't changed a bit since 1984 - one of my friends had a cassette tape player with the Debut album (Duran Duran 1981) loaded and a cheapo stereo headphone. Definitely a life changing day and moment. I put on the headphone and he played the casette, voila, PLANET EARTH! 36 years later, I still remember the moment like yesterday, I still know where I was standing. I love your smile when you are playing those basslines after ... you've played them for a million times. I am 51 (2020), when I grow up, I want to play like you! I have managed to own two bases, a fender jazz and a precision bass. The latter is a red color body cause I saw a picture you were playing a red precision in a music magazine (actually I never saw you with the red precision afterwards). Back in early 80s, we didn't have MTV etc. All I had was Duran Druan 1st album's cover image and another photo my friend ripped off a magazine for me. At least I did know you were John :) I figured it's 3 Taylor brothers of course, along with a Nick guy and a French guy. Here is what I guessed. Simon (I thought he must be Andy, just because he looked like an Andy IMO). You = JT! Andy = must be Nick Nick = must be Roger Roger = the easiest to figure out, the French guy, Simon Le Bon! I wasn't 100% sure except Roger being Simon Le Bon at least! (His B/W bumble bee stripe T-shirt was a giveaway) Thanks for all those great music and inspiration, Duran Duran! Thanks John, please do 'last chance on...' too. Stay safe!! PS) I love your and Andy's books!

A class act, a consummate professional, immensely talented, and still devastatingly handsome after 40 years! I know some people that were lucky enough to have met him and they have all said he is kind, affable, and genuinely interested in his fans. He likes the connection. I will meet him one day. He may be in a nursing home, but I bet I will still try to nail him because sexy like that is FOREVER!

Being a teen in the 80's, If you loved Duran Duran you were lables as shalow. Because of that, It took me years to admit that I picked up the Bass because of John Taylor, Just to learn that all the bass players I've met, from amatures to the most proffesionals, have the outmost respcet to John who is (As many have said before me) one of the most underrated bass players in history.

Great idea for a series. Love how prominent the basslines are in those early tracks.

I come back and watch this video for inspiration as an aspiring bass player, to remind myself that I'll never be this cool (few can) but I can strive to be this humble and down to earth. Thanks JT!

I've been doing a thing lately (during the lockdown) where every morning, rather than put the news on like I used to do, I've been playing a random CD that I haven't listened to in years. As a result of that, I re-discovered the first Duran Duran album and have been really enjoying it. And then YT recommends this... Coincidence, ofc, but kind of cool :)

Bass God. His bass always is memorable in Duran Duran songs...the bass lick in the middle of Rio comes to mind.

That was too exciting. Thanks! You talk about 1976 being the best time to be alive, well for me, the best time was 1982 when I was 16 and my friends for me when you guys came about writing hit after hit and all of the other 80’s bands. You guys were one of the best and that’s why I’m a bass player. Stay safe and hope to see you guys in the future. Thanks so much for all the years of being fantastic musicians.

This is interesting John. Thank you. I'm just learning acoustic guitar. Learned piano in high school and from just tinkering on our families piano. Reading music & Vocals in high school. Got my children to learn music in school. I know it's important to learn music and a great way of expressing yourself. I want more of your knowledge. Thank you.

John Taylor was the reason I started playing bass when I was 12 years old. Played for a few years, then quit for many.. a few months ago I picked it back up and been learning some Duran Duran songs. Maybe its just me but they are some of the most challenging songs Ive ever played.

I don't think so, even in the industry he's generally regarded as one of the best bass players around, which is quite an achievement for a new romantic era musician. the only other guys in this league who had pop origins are (were) Nick Beggs and Mick Karn

I feel almost criminal in not recognizing the musicality of Duran Duran back in the day. I dismissed them early on in favor of Van Halen, AC/DC, etc. After watching a few of these episodes with John I honestly feel I missed something 40 years ago and now want to go back through their catalog!!
