Good job! As a slackliner, I’m impressed! However the times are bs. The only way you’d get 2 hours of practice in 7 days and learning how to butt bounce (let alone your expressed frustration) is if you only counted the time ON the slackline. However, the time off the line is often just as important as the time on the line. You get to reflect on your body and how it moves and interacts with the line. To illustrate, if you’re a beginner slackliner, you won’t be able to spend a lot of time standing on the line. You’ll probably stand on the line for a few seconds at a time and by the time you’re able to walk, you might only have about 5 minutes of standing time on the line. But have been trying to figure it out for 1-2 hours. I think a more realistic time for you is 7 days.
@storm_osrs6 жыл бұрын
You can see the days going from morning to late evening in the video as well, which got me really surprised how he was only at 15 minutes by then.
@David-gj9qr4 жыл бұрын
This is how Mike Boyd does it all the time though. He even said it one of his videos that he prefers hours to days because telling someone it takes two hour is less intimidating than 7 days and it’s easier to understand. If he said it took him seven days it wouldn’t be a Mike Boyd learn quick guest video it would just be a regular learning documentation that just happens to be on Mike Boyd’s channel because Mike Boyd also says how long it took him to learn something in hours rather than days. It wouldn’t be a Mike Boyd guest video if he said it took him 7 days

come on, he learned to walk the line, turn around and then he learned to butt-bounce :D I think I'd call it "learned", just like I would consider someone doing a 3-ball cascade "able to juggle". There's tons of work towards mastering, but the basics are there :D
@NewGreenShoe6 жыл бұрын
I did a lot of additional training orientated around walking which I didn't include in the video (but is calculated in the time spent practising) as I was wary of making the video too long. Rest assured I've done plenty of training since this! An additional factor is that the amount of time I spent training did end up affecting my spine and so I couldn't continue after getting that first proper butt bounce. All better now though!
@MattMcConaha6 жыл бұрын
You basically just summed up the entire Mike Boyd channel. Though usually Mike continues practicing even after his one "lucky" success and ends up getting genuinely decent at his tasks, including this in his montage rather than the main portion of the video.

For anyone looking to slackline, look at 1:52 . This will happen a lot on your first day. You're building the muscles in your legs. Don't be discouraged. Just put a foot on the slackline, put some weight on it, your leg will shake, then take the weight of it. Do this for a few hours and then focus on walking. Side note: you can stand on the slackline with one foot and use your other leg like a third arm to move to try to balance yourself. Second side note: don't forget the tree protectors. I just use old towels. Last thing, BRING A FRIEND. Slacklining is fun and it's fun to learn a new skill with someone. Plus, since you're just trying to stand and walk for the first few days, it's easy to talk to your friend.
@ericsurf66 жыл бұрын
Love it~!
@NoaSilver6 жыл бұрын
I'm no master, but I can walk the slackline and I've been taught that it's better to pick a spot on the horizon instead of looking at your feet, it helps keep your balance. Also its best to keep your foot aligned with the slackline and use the leg that is not touching the slackline as a third limb for balance. Switching left right as you walk obviously. This teaches control rather than the more hasted running type of slacklining and also allows you to stand still, which is much harder than it seems. Just like with a hanstand where walking is easier than keeping control, because standing still requires balance and walking is a constant "falling motion" if you will. Just a few things I noticed, thought I'd share. Heading over to your channel now, great video!

@advancedl26613 жыл бұрын
@@edwardlane1255 I think you are right, but Im pretty sure tightening it still applies to a slackrope, because that is what I use. I’m pretty sure tightening it helps for beginners more, it helped me a lot and then I loosened it a little bit to do tricks and move it around and bounce kinda. It’s rlly fun, but when ur just starting I recommend tightening. I’m not a pro or anything so I’m not sure though :)

Basically how to cross the right rope: 1) Just start at one end, balancing on one foot till you're comfortable, without falling, then repeat of for the next foot. 2) Then take your big boy step, remember to align your feet with the line (so it's pointing forward) and to have your hands higher up. And also to be sure and balanced when taking you're next step. 3) Rinse and repeat till your body kinda just self alligns itself, were you balance yourself without thinking. I learned to cross the tight rope by going at it every recess for like a week or so (as my school had one) 14 btw lol

Rafael Santos yes. Too tight or too loose will make it much easier, and his was way too loose. With that much slack a lot of people would consider it to be cheating.

You should learn Korean writing system (hangeul) and how to read it to the point that you don't have to think every character and it comes kind of naturally (??) :D it's said that “A wise man [could] acquaint himself with them before the morning [was] over; a stupid man [could] learn them in the space of ten days.” It took my few months to learn everything and even now I can't read like a native because I practiced like once a week... Hey I finally got my own idea on what you could try to learn! Learn to ride a self balancing unicycle. It may sound redundant since you already learned to ride a unicycle, but I think they are quite different. Also, most people say "I'm gonna break a leg if I ride this" or "it's too difficult" so it would be a good way of showing that is not hard and not that dangerous either, and that anyone, from 5 to 90 years old, could be able to ride one (as long as you have legs and feet that is...)
@tibhamel6 жыл бұрын
Being easy doesn't mean it's not entertaining. It all depends on the goal he sets for himself. The video on unicycle already makes it seem less interesting, I agree, that's too bad. The biggest problem I think though, is the price of those things. Between 500 to 1500€, you wouldn't buy one for a video if you don't plan on using it after. So I think if he could get one free from a company, and learn it as a paid promotion, it would still be a good video :) (never thought I'd recommend someone to do paid promotion stuff...)
@tibhamel6 жыл бұрын
Again, it all depends on the goals he set himself. Going forwards took me 2 hours, going backwards took me 2 weeks, riding with one foot took me 2 months (those numbers look way too convenient). But I never really tried to learn these things, they just came naturally over time, so I think it could be shorter, while still making a good video.
@pectenmaximus2313 жыл бұрын
Walking a Slackline back and forth with decent consistency takes 3-7 days, putting in an hour or two per day (I guess this could depend exactly what your setup looks like, e.g. tension and length). You can take a few steps on your first day. In a few weeks you can start doing simple tricks (unless your goals is right from the beginning trying to bounce around on it?...) I think it’s best to always start from an end where the tension is higher and then work your way to the middle. Starting from the middle is insanely tiring and frustrating for people. In the middle, it’s best to just go up and try to stand there as long as you can, just practicing your balance with swaying etc. Then when you start walking from an end towards the middle, you’ll have practiced handling the greater variability that the middle brings.

Amit Hamburg If you’re 20 feet tall, you need to drop the ball to dunk it

Bob the Blob it was exaggaration in order to move towards the point which was height doesnt matter at all, all it does is save you vertical jump work. For example, Nate Robinson, a 5'9(i think) point guard can dunk, and also Yao Ming(idk his height but he is tall). The difference would be Nate having to put way more work to increase his vert, while Yao wouldnt have to do so since he has a higher starting point. Put in the work, you'll dunk. Nothing to learn about it. Sorry for the huge wall of text

That was a truly impressive display of dogged determination leading to success - a lesson to us all. However, to the extent that it is at all important - although if you're going to the trouble of putting a timer on the screen one presumes you expect viewers to invest in it - I am slightly confused by the timer on the screen. It appears to show only 15 or 16 minutes on day 1 (query why you would go to the trouble of setting the rig for only 15 minutes of actual practice on that day) and the entire first goal was achieved in 40 odd minutes, which seems remarkable for the performance of a clearly difficult feat never before attempted by Owen. Perhaps I'm missing something. Still, pretty good by any standards.

Definitely liked this one more than the last. Showed more of the "try, fail, and try again" mentality rather than the glory the fruit of the harvest brings. Both were pretty neat though.

Okay this channel has encouraged me to learn at least one new skill a month. So far I’ve tackled the apple split. Any other easy ones to start me off?

I prefer this guest, he seems like he has his own style and is not just trying to copy Mikes, a bit like the last guest did.
